10 on the 10th: June!

June is a good month, right? Here are a few interesting tidbits for your next trivia game! June is named after the Roman goddess, Juno, who just so happened to be the goddess of marriage, childbirth, and love…hmmm…in that order, do you suppose? Believe it or not, March and June end on the same day of the week every year. No other month, however, begins on the same day of the week as June, including leap years! More Nobel prize winners have been born in the month of June! And, contrary to what most of us think, June is not the month for weddings! And, that, my friends, brings us to this rather lackluster list of questions! Gotta give a girl a point for trying! I hope you’ll join in the fun either by commenting with your answers, emailing, or posting your blog posts!

Look at that train!

Let’s get the show on the road…

  1. What is the most amazing thing you remember about your wedding?
    • I don’t have any one thing that stands out as being amazing about my wedding.  I loved every second of it…even those few moments when I thought I was going to pass out!  The church wasn’t air conditioned, and I was hot and nervous!  I think our pastor recognized something in my eyes because he sped up the service!
  2. Tell us about your wedding dress.
    • I loved my wedding dress.  I bought it a year before we got married at an upscale (for Fort Wayne anyway) store called Fishman’s.  I remember going there with a friend who was making layaway payments on her dress.  As one does, I started looking at dresses because I was getting married the next year.  I saw this dress, and it was love at first sight.  My dress was ivory, had a vee neck and long sleeves even though we got married in June.  I believe it was an a-line silhouette.  I think it was crepe de chine with lots of Venice lace on the bodice, wrists, and along the hem.  Light blue ribbon wound through the lace.  The only thing that makes me sit back and say, “Huh?” is the veil!  Why didn’t the sales associate talk me into something more flattering and that actually went with the dress?  I put my dress in layaway soon after seeing it for the first time and made payments on it for months.  I kept the receipts for years but no longer have them (though I do have the receipt for my daughter’s dress).
  3. Did you include all three things (they start with b) at your wedding?  Care to share more?
    • My dress had blue ribbon.  I borrowed my mom’s diamond earrings.  Oh, geez!  I just realized the third doesn’t start with a b!  It starts with o.  My something old was…honestly, I have no clue…maybe my underwear!
  4. Where was your wedding held…church, park, neighborhood bar?
    • We got married in a church.  I was baptized there.  It was a lovely old building with the sanctuary on the second floor.  As I said, it was old, so old that little pieces of plaster would rain down on our heads during Sunday services!  Unfortunately, that church exists only in memories and in photos now. It was torn down a few years after we were married. Our reception was small and very understated.  We had cake, punch, nuts, and those rainbow colored mints!  Our wedding cake was a gift from a woman Nigel worked with and was delicious!  My dad’s side of the family left the reception to go to a local bar because our reception was dry.  Booze was an important part of any Rose get together!  So, I guess you could say part of the reception took place at a neighborhood bar though we didn’t go! We paid for the entire wedding ourselves.
  5. What is the worst thing you’ve ever seen at a wedding?
    • I honestly haven’t seen anything particularly awful at a wedding.  I do think it’s bad when guests have their phones out snapping photos while the bride walks down the aisle and during the ceremony.
  6. Do you think less of a bride who doesn’t wear white?
    • Nope!  I think a bride should wear whatever color she wants as long as she feels beautiful in it!  My dress wasn’t white nor was my daughter’s.  The consultant at the wedding shop told us white dresses actually don’t photograph well!  And, I rather think the idea of a black wedding dress is stunning!
  7. If you got married tomorrow or sometime soon, what would be in your bouquet?
    • I carried white spider mums because the florist talked me out of roses.  My maiden name was Rose so I thought that would be appropriate. My daughter, on the other hand, carried three dozen gorgeous red roses.  If I were going to get married tomorrow or even some time soon, I would carry hydrangeas, white and pink peonies, and lots and lots of white and pink roses with lots of vines trailing down.
  8. Have you ever attended a celebrity’s wedding?  (Yes, I’m looking for name droppers!)
    • Well, my invitation to Will & Kate’s wedding arrived so late I wasn’t able to book a flight or a room.  Just kidding!  I haven’t been invited to a celebrity wedding let alone attend one!
  9. What wedding tradition means the most to you?
    • Why don’t I think about my answers when I come up with these questions?  I think the wedding tradition that would mean the most to me would be having my dad walk me down the aisle.  I cannot imagine the bittersweet joy that would bring.  Unfortunately, Dad died two years before I got married so my brother walked me down the aisle.  It was beautiful to see Nigel walking our daughter down the aisle.  There may have been a few tears shed.
  10. Describe your perfect wedding.
    • My perfect wedding would be the one I had with the addition of my dad being healthy and walking me down the aisle.  And, I would be carrying that gorgeous bouquet of hydrangeas, peonies, and roses.  I would also wear a better veil or maybe just a crown of flowers in my hair!  But, I would definitely have the same groom.  How can you love someone more almost 50 years later?  I don’t have the answer to that.  And, I would have worn the same dress even though it was hotter than sin that day!
LOOK AT THAT LACE!!!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

Oh, wow! That was a trip down Memory Lane! Sorry for the low quality of the photos. Our wedding album was ruined in a basement flood many, many years ago. Nigel saved it, and we only just threw it out because it was a moldy mess. Luckily, I have a mini album we had given my mother-in-law. She returned it to us many years ago. I am trying really hard to quit using exclamation points. My son has told me I use them way too often!!!! What can I say, I’m an expressive person (see no exclamation point). So, can we talk? Did you enjoy reminiscing about or maybe even planning your wedding? If you could pick a celebrity wedding (given that you haven’t actually attended one), which would it be? Do you think weddings have become too much of a production and less an occasion? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise I really do respond. You may or may not receive a notification of my response. Please just check back in a couple of days.

Check out Nigel’s shirt ruffles and brown velvet bow tie! Can you believe he agreed to this?

  1. Lovely to read about your wedding. I had one last week from a girlfriend. Have a great weekend.

    • Thanks so much, Nancy! I haven’t been to a wedding in a long time. We’re at that stage right now where no one is the right age! Have a fabulous rest of the weekend!

  2. When we went wedding dress shopping we were told by many of the stores that they rarely carry true all white gown anymore as most people look better in ivory or off-white. I know just a few years after we got married I started seeing dressing with colored embroidery and ribbon and things too. I might have been tempted to go that route if it had been an option. I really like color; so much so that I could not pick a bridesmaid color. I waited for my bridesmaid to try on dresses and when they all fell in love with the same dress– that was the color! It was a pretty pale green called celadon.

    • I honestly can’t remember if they had white dresses though I would suspect they did because this was back in the 70s. When we were shopping for my daughter’s dress, she really loved the one she got. But, she wanted white. They couldn’t tell her what color the embellishments would be for sure. That’s when they said something about the photographs…which may have been just a ploy to get her to buy the dress. Her dress was almost white. I can’t remember the name of the color.

I have no idea how I came up with blue and green as the colors for my bridesmaids. I think it may have been because those were two of the colors of the dresses I chose. (We had living room drapes in our first home that were celadon!)

  3. Marsha you had a beautiful wedding! I love your dress, especially the long sleeves. Your wedding sounds lovely, I love the simpicity of the reception. If I were to redo my wedding now, I would probably go more simple this time around.

    • Thank you so much, Erin! Big weddings/receptions just weren’t a thing when we got married. I don’t think I would change that though. I loved my dress, and it still as gorgeous now as it was then!

  4. Marsha, this might be my favorite of all the 10 on the 10th questions! I enjoyed my walk down memory lane just as much as I enjoyed yours! I loved seeing your wedding photos, too! You are a beautiful bride and such a handsome couple! By the way, I use a lot of exclamation points as well. I find myself deleting a lot of them. Haha.

    Shelbee

    • Thank you so much, Shelbee! I was really afraid it was going to be so cliched. But, everyone seems to have had fun remembering their special day! I wish I had that waist again! My dress is still just as gorgeous as it was then. All I’ve done is put it in a drawer in my cedar chest (but not part of the cedar so it doesn’t smell). My son gives me so much grief!!! But, he’s still a keeper! I can’t wait to read your post!

  5. Awww…. I loved reading bout your wedding. So sweet. And you two looked amazing in your wedding attire. I’m sorry your dad wasn’t alive to participate. I especially loved these questions, Marsha! It allowed me to relive that very special weekend.

    • Thanks, Michelle! It’s funny how I can remember parts of it like it was yesterday, and then there are other moments in the day when I have no clue what happened! I will have to bop over to your blog to read about your day! I seem to remember a very special dress!

  6. I very much enjoyed reading about your wedding. Your dress is lovely, as are the both of you.
We also don’t have any ‘official’ photos from our wedding(long story), just some photos. But pictures don’t make a marriage and this November it will be fifty years.
I still have my dress, which I made and will never fit into again. It is white satin with a small purple floral print, overlaid with white lace. Sounds fancy but is a very simple style.
My mother gave me a silk handkerchief which her father brought home from France after World War I. He gave it to her mother ( my grandmother) and she carried it on their wedding day. She later gave it to my mother on her wedding and my mother passed it on to me. I lent it to my sisters for their weddings, and then I gifted it to my daughter on her wedding.
Fun fact- my niece and god daughter is marrying today. I expect it to be a much fancier event than ours.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I forgot all the other questions!

    • Oh, Elizabeth! What a wonderful and treasured thing to have for weddings in your family. We pinned a linen handkerchief with a piece of the blue ribbon from my dress and my mom’s wedding band to my daughter’s slip. Unfortunately, my sister has the handkerchief, and I forgot to get it back from her. I’m sure she’s gotten rid of it by now.

Thank you so much for being a part of this 10 on the 10th! I loved everything about my wedding. We won’t celebrate 50 years for a few more years, but we seem to be rarities anymore, right? Happy anniversary to you in November! And, I could not fit into my dress either. I hope one of my granddaughters would like to use the lace or something, but I doubt they will.

I hope your niece’s wedding was lovely! And, thank you again for commenting!

  7. Loved your post. Your dress was fabulous, it would still look OK today. I do believe weddings have become more of a production. Far fewer are held in churches. It’s too much about IG with brides even dictating to guests what color they should wear.

    • Thanks so much, Gail! I fell in love with my dress the first moment I saw it. I honestly don’t think I even tried on another one. I think I would have to give my regrets if I were told what color I should wear to a wedding! That just blows my mind!

  8. Awesome ❤️
I love your idea about this

    Thanks for sharing

Looking forward for the next post.

  10. I’m a day late but I really enjoyed reading about your wedding, reminiscing about mine, and though I didn’t mention it, I thought of my son’s wedding and many others that were special to me. Your dress was very pretty! I didn’t know that about white dresses, and I think mine was very close to white. I do think a lot of wedding nowadays are almost more about the photos for social media than about the couple celebrating their union. The only reason it bothers me is I’ve seen the price tags for some of those kinds of weddings, and I feel like the money would have been much better spent on a downpayment for a house! Thanks for hosting and for the fun questions!

    • Thanks, Kym! I’m happy to have you join me whenever you can! I kept thinking of my daughter’s wedding because I was in so much of the planning. My son’s wedding was beautiful, too, but I didn’t have to do any of the planning. I don’t remember if I’d even thought about what color I wanted to wear. When I saw my dress, I knew it was the one, and it just happened to be ivory.

It is sad that weddings are more social media events now than ever. For me, it’s about the beauty of the wedding. We didn’t spend more than probably $500 on our wedding including my dress! But, of course, that was back in the 70s! I am glad I don’t have any more daughters getting married! I worked with a man who told his daughter he would pay x amount of dollars so if she wanted a small wedding, his amount would probably pay for a very nice honeymoon. She took him up on the deal!

  11. Gosh, I loved reading this, and seeing these old photos. Geez oh pete, how young you both looked,
    XOOX
    Jodie

    • Awww, thanks, Jodie! We were really young! I really wish we still had our wedding photos because there were a couple of really beautiful ones taken in front of the stained glass windows in the church.

  12. Loved reading about you wedding and I adore these throwback pics! I like both of my weddings! Lol! After my first husband died, I didn’t dream I would get a second chance but when I did I went for all the things I wanted to try the first time around. Lol!

    https;//www.kathrineeldridge.com

    • Thank you, Kathrine! I did not know your first husband died. My condolences…you must have been so very young. I’m glad you found love again and had a second chance at happiness as well as a wedding.

  13. My dress wasn’t white either, it was called winter white for the same reason! I was told it didn’t look good with my complexion and didn’t photograph well. I had a few pink pearls and ribbons, too. It’s more fun if there are color differences to show your personality! What fun prompts!

    • I honestly don’t remember what mine was called. Since it was many, many years ago, my guess is the color was just plain old ivory! My daughter’s dress was candle light. She really wanted white, but the sample they had was in the candle light color. She loved the color of the beading and embellishments, and they weren’t sure what color it would be on a white dress. I think the color she wore was perfect for the time of day/year (December at 4:30pm) and her coloring. Oh, I bet the pink pearls and ribbons were so very perfect!

      Thanks, Laura!
