My how things can change in the course of a month. Nigel had another doctor appointment. The surgeon was a little confuzzled by what he saw on the x-rays. He said there was bone growth where there shouldn’t have been. It appears Nigel is a very lucky guy because his femur did, in fact, crack a bit. But, without any medical intervention, his body just leapt to the rescue and grew bone to take care of that fracture! I think that spendy wheelchair just earned its place in our Orthopedic Hall of Fame! The surgeon did give him a good talking to about his posture and how he should be walking (not that his beloved wife hasn’t been saying so all along). So, now, Nigel is asking me if he’s walking correctly. Just so you know, he’s supposed to be “in the cage” of the walker and not pushing it way out in front of him. He also has a tendency to turn his right foot out. We can’t remember if that’s the way he always walked or not, though. But, the surgeon said he should walk with the foot straight out. So, now I can nag encourage him to do so!
As you may or may not know, this is my birthday month! Yay me! October is my favorite month of the year because I can decorate for fall (haven’t really done that yet); the weather turns cooler; and, it’s my birthday! I tried to order myself a cake through my oldest (he knows a guy), but the guy was all booked up. I’ll have to keep those photos and ask earlier next year, I guess.
Without further ado…
Honestly, the biggest one is that I’m alive to celebrate another birthday! I mean, maybe you celebrate in the afterlife, but I’m pretty sure birthday cake is just a given in Heaven!
The second thing I like about birthdays is celebrating whoever is having a birthday. Back in the old days when my kids were little, we didn’t really do much. I regret not making a bigger deal out of it for them. We had birthday cakes and such, but we usually just had family rather than big birthday parties with their friends. I do think, though, my kids really loved being with my family (not so much Nigel’s) so it didn’t really bother them that much.
Now, I try to get my people the gifts they want…not necessarily the things they need (though I did buy my daughter and son-in-law floor mats for their new cars last year).
OK…here’s to being shallow! Of course, one of the good things about birthdays is receiving a gift or two. Nigel has been asking me for months what I want. And, believe it or not, I can’t come up with anything. I mean I’d love a new Corvette, but I don’t want to pay the insurance or license plate fees! Oh, I know…a vintage Ford Mustang! I have a few more days to come up with something.
Memories of past birthdays are always a favorite. One of my earliest memories is of a cake my mom baked for me. She frosted it with chocolate frosting, and I’m almost positive she decorated it with orange icing. It seems to me we were at my Grandma Rose’s house (my dad’s mom) when she did that. I also remember having a birthday party for my sixth birthday. I got to invite some neighbor kids over for cake and ice cream. Pretty good memory, right?
Receiving a phone call at 5:30 am from my mom…she used to call us all on our birthdays before she left for work. Let’s just say Mom didn’t have the best singing voice! What I wouldn’t give to get that phone call now.
Taking over that tradition and calling my kids, bonus kids, grandkids, brother, sisters, niece, and great-nephews is another favorite. I wait until a decent hour, though! It’s funny how they answer their phones because I know they’d be disappointed if I forgot! I’ll soon have a great-great niece or nephew to sing to!
Birthday cake. I’ve mentioned that a couple of times, but I’m talking about my own birthday cake. Last year, Nigel got me a cheesecake from the guy my son knows. I love cheesecake, but I don’t really think of it as a birthday cake. One of these years, I’m going to have a gloriously decorated birthday cake!
This is getting hard! Hmmm…another thing I like about accumulating birthdays is not worrying as much about what others think of me. I’m not going to say I’m one of those people who no longer cares, but I certainly care less.
Dressing up to eat at a really nice restaurant. I love to dress up (duh), and there is no better time that to do that for my birthday!
Wrap it up, Marsha!
Hmm…that was tougher than I thought it would be. I probably should start thinking about next year’s 10 on the 10th for October now so I can come up with something original! So, can we talk? Do you have a favorite birthday memory? What truly makes a birthday (anyone’s, not just yours) special? Are you a fan of birthday cakes? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

I will join you in that Mustang! My favourite car, but only the older one! That’s what I missed most on my birthday, a phonecall from my father….
Oh, we would have lots of fun…do you navigate well? My dad had one that was very similar to this one only his was green. I would love to have a vintage sports car some day. I am with you on the phone call, Nancy…
Hope you have a wonderful day full of surprise gifts and phone calls. A little pampering, friends, family and good cheer make a day feel special.
Thanks so much, Rosie! Those are the best kinds of days!
October is such an awesome month!! Happy October birthday! And there is still time to get a beautifully decorated cake! It is your birthday month – go for it!
I am so glad to hear Nigel is doing well. Isn’t that body wild? My brother’s spine did that – build a little spiky edged bone cage protecting the bit that was broken! It’s so amazing to me what the body does.
Thanks, Erin! I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet. It would be just the two of us because all my kids are either on fall break or busy. Then, I would end up eating too much! Maybe a pretty cupcake, though!
Wow, that’s pretty cool your brother’s spine did that. I don’t think Mike realized how lucky he was though the surgeon really did. Mike was just glad to hear bone is growing around his implant. I’m hoping next month’s appointment goes even better.
Happy birthday month! Mine is in November!
Thanks, Dara! Happy early birthday!
My mother in law calls all her grandkids on the morning of their birthdays and sings happy to birthday to them; I thought that was such a cute tradition (and while I absolutely love my mother in law I’ll fully admit [and she’d agree] that she doesn’t have the greatest singing voice either)! That cake is beautiful! I hope you get a delicious birthday cake for your special day.
Thanks, Joanne! I think the birthday song is one of the hardest ones to sing anyway. I just do my best. I hope to find a cake, but I won’t be too upset if I don’t.
There’s nothing like a birthday to make you feel special. And you definitely are one special gal.
XOXO
Jodie
Thank you so much, Jodie! I really appreciate that!

Happy Birthday Month! You get to celebrate all month long too. I always get me a cake and celebrate with a theme each year. I’m trying to decide now what my theme should be. I also love that Ford my son has a Ford it’s not vintage but its an older model I told him to take care of it because it could be vintage the way these years go by so fast
Oh, thanks so much, Kita! I’m going to definitely do some kind of celebration…maybe just a cake and pick out a gift. Oh, I think a theme is a wonderful idea. My dad had a Mustang (he had two) that was about this year, but it was green. The other one was later when they were bigger and was gold.
Happy birthday, Marsha! 🙂 From Angie at YourTrueSelfBlog.com
Thanks so much, Angie!
We like a lot of the same things about birthdays! I absolutely love cake and birthdays is generally the only time I eat it, so I love everyone’s birthday celebrations for that reason alone! LOL Happy Birthday, and best wishes for Nigel’s continued healing. (For the short time I had to use a walker after my knee replacement, it was harder than I thought to walk INSIDE it correctly, so I get it!)
Thanks, Kym! I need to get around to reading everyone’s posts, but my time management is lacking right now. I’m just a bit overwhelmed. I love cake, too, unless it’s got bananas in it. I just don’t like bananas at all…maybe that’s the key to losing weight…put bananas in everything!
