10 on the 10th: September

I am not going to talk about the weather. I am not going to talk about the weather. I am not going to talk about the weather. OK, I am but just a little. Last month, I was bragging about our lush green grass. Well, that has definitely changed! It’s been hot and dry here so our grass is scratchy and dry. Jack tries to hop around finding softer grass as he does his business. But, cooler days are ahead. And, that’s all I’m saying about the weather!

September is one of those months I enjoy. The weather is usually cooler; the sun sets earlier; and the pace seems more laid back. When I was teaching, I was already in a groove. Now, I don’t have any kind of groove (trust me, you don’t even want to see me dance). I already apologized for this month’s prompts. And, now I have to pay the piper and answer them myself! I hope you’ll forgive my transgression and play along. Please either link up your post (and any others you’d like), comment, or email me your answers.

Without further ado…

Tell us about your favorite nine letter word. Oh, Marsha! Way to start it off on a high note! One of my favorite nine letter words…hold on a sec, let me count…would have to be grandkids! I have three on Earth and one waiting in Heaven. For a little over fourteen years, I have been a Gay-Gay, Grammy, Granny, Grans, and probably a few I forget. My grandkids are the smartest, best looking, most talented…OK, I know every grandparent thinks that. But, all three of my grands are very special people. They have different talents, and I love them with every inch of my being. And, yes, I know I said one of because I like words, and I can think of several nine letter words I like, but grandkids has to be one of the best!

Tell us about a song with September in the title. This was really easy for me. I think I heard “See You in September” for the first time riding on the school bus. It’s a song from the 60s so that would fit with me remembering it then. Even though I always think of it being a song for the fall, it’s really more about waiting for September to come.

Tell us about a famous celebration that takes place in September. I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking when I wrote this. For those of us in the United States, probably the most famous is Labor Day. This is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It was signed into law on June 28, 1894 by Grover Cleveland, and we all think of it as the official end of summer. Thanks, Grover! Here is a comprehensive list of different holidays in September.

Tell us about your favorite pirate for International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th. Well, this is an easy one. It’s Captain Jack Sparrow, right? I know Johnny Depp is problematic for many people. But, I have been in love with him since his “21 Jump Street” days. Our school librarian knew about my serious crush and gave me a poster of him as the merry old Captain. It hung inside my storage closet for many years. My students all knew and found it quite hysterical! I hope he truly is this kind…

Tell us about a pet peeve having to do with September, Fall, or Spring (for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere). Good grief! Who writes these? Hmmm…wait a moment…I’m thinking. I guess my pet peeve would be raking leaves. I’ll be hones, though. I would love to have to rake leaves like we used to do. We would have to do this every couple of weeks for about six weeks! Unfortunately, almost all of the trees in this photo have been cut down.

Come up with a stupid question for Stupid Question Day on September 28th. Hmmm…what’s stupid to me may be quite intelligent to you, right? So, this one is quite subjective. Are they going to be twins? There’s a back story to this one. When my oldest granddaughter was a few months old, her mom (my daughter) discovered she was pregnant. They lived with us for several months as her husband was deployed. We were out shopping one day when she was quite far along. The young girl checking us out at some store actually asked her if they were going to be twins. I mean, one is still in utero, and the other one is in a stroller. So, no, they are not going to be twins. My daughter was kind and just said, “No.” We did have a good laugh in the car later, though.

Tell us about a favorite September memory. Honestly, I’d be lying if I just happened to come up with one because I just don’t do calendars like that. I cheated a bit and looked back through the photos on my phone. This is from a trip to the Biltmore in September, 2019. This is the basement of the estate where a nice lady volunteered to take a photo of Nigel and me. I love the Biltmore and would visit there every year if it were closer.

Tell us about your favorite celebrity whose birthday is in September. I had to google this because I didn’t know of any right off hand. There are so many, but one of my favorite singers is Patsy Cline. She had such an amazing voice. Others include several wonderful female comics…Leslie Jones, Jo Anne Worley, and Jane Curtin!

Tell us about your favorite memory with your grandparent(s) for National Grandparents Day. I’m not sure I would call this a favorite memory, but it’s very vivid in my mind. My little brother and I were going home with our Grandpa Luderman on a snowy Friday night. He had a Chevy El Camino which was a bit like a car made into a truck. Grandpa didn’t have much patience and was pretty ticked at the back up of traffic on the double lane highway because of the bad weather. He decided to take a side road. This was back in the day before front wheel drive cars. He probably had snow tires which had little studs on them to grip the road. Needless to say, it was a much longer drive home as we plowed through snowdrift after snowdrift.

Tell us about your favorite thing involving nine pieces/parts/items. Now, I thought this was a quite clever prompt. But, I haven’t a clue. I’m looking around the room to see if there is anything that contains just nine pieces/parts/items. Everything has much more than nine pieces. OK, I have a collection of nine pieces of Mackenzie Childs items! I have three canisters, a tea pot, some stands, and another canister for my kitchen utensils!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I think this may have been the toughest 10 on the 10th so far…both writing and answering! So, can we talk? Is there a format you like better than another? Did I leave a crucial “tell us about” out? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise I respond within a couple of days.

  1. I loved hearing about your September memories! That questions about the twins was funny and love that throwback photo of you and your husband.

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I was so surprised when my daughter just calmly said nope! I do love the Biltmore and was glad that happened in September so I could include it!

  2. We have lots of fraternal (boy/girl) twins between family and close family friends and I am always amazed at just how many people stopped to ask “oh are they identical twins?” Thank goodness I wasn’t the one answering because I don’t think I could have kept a straight face explaining that no a boy and a girl are actually not the same. We used to have rake a yard of leaves like that and I do not miss it at all (it wasn’t our yard and our leaves but belonged to my husband’s great aunt who lived alone). We’d drag the boys over and for an entire weekend we’d rake and leaf blow and do our best to get every last leaf into the woods surrounding the lawn. It was such a big job.

    • Daenel’s post talks about the twin thing, too! She has fraternal twins (boy/girl) and was always asked if they were identical. Apparently, most people don’t realize they can’t be identical.

We were going to get a leaf vacuum if we had stayed in that house. I sure wish we had. I miss having my own yard and not having to worry about neighbors being so close.

      Thanks, Joanne!

  3. This September 10 is rough. But here goes.
    1. I guess I will say September. It wasn’t when I was a child what with school starting and the temperatures falling, winter coming. But now, I don’t go to school anymore and cooler temps are much more appreciated!
    2. See You in September is my favorite September song. It was on the radio a lot in my youth and is so poignant.
    3. Not sure I remember any celebrations except a cousin’s birthday.
    4. Pirate? Hmmmm. Captain Hook? Not favorite so to speak, but well known.
    5. Leaves. Everywhere. They were fun to shuffle through as a kid walking through the park, but the constant clean up is a pain as a grownup. Still like shuffling through them when there are in the curbs when walking around our neighborhood!
    6. What are you doing? When asked by someone near you. What does it look like I am doing?
    7. Going back to school in high school and catching up with friends after a summer apart.
    8. Colin Firth. Who couldn’t fall for Mr. Darcy?
    9. My favorite Grandmother story is about how my Grandmother, who lived with my Godmother, used to curl my hair like Shirley Temple, using my Aunt Jean’s brush and water. Aunt Jean didn’t like her brush being wet. Once we were going downtown to have lunch with Aunt Jean and Grandmom said “don’t tell Aunt Jean I used her brush.” Which of course I blurt out when I saw her. I might have been about three at the time, but I never heard the end of that story!
    10. This last one really has me stumped. Does singing Ninety-nice bottles of beer on the wall at summer camp count if you get all the way down to the end?

    • Eileen, these are wonderful answers, and your last one has me chuckling! I have a friend who lives in Vancouver. She’s actually seen Colin Firth out and about living his life. I’d be hard pressed not to rush over to him and just goggle at him! I love that “See You in September” song. It’s such a good one, and it should be played on more than a blog!

      Thanks, Eileen, for playing along!

  4. Loved your talking about grandkids. Oh and that question about twins is so hilarious. My sister and I were often asked whether we were twins, and when we answered that we are two years apart, people always wrongly assumed she’s the older one. By the way, you totally have me inspired for at least a couple blog posts.

    • Thanks, Astrid! I always have to laugh when I think about that poor girl. I don’t know if she was just really confused or what! I mean, it was pretty obvious they weren’t going to be twins!

I’m glad I was an inspiration for you! Please let me know when you post them!

  5. Grandkids! Great answer.

The picture of you and Nigel at the Biltmore is wonderful. I have to say, that’s on my bucket list.

Thank you for these questions, this made me think about my grandparents and remember events that I hadn’t thought about in years. It put a smile on my face.

    • Thanks, Daenel! We visited the Biltmore the first time with my mom. My kids were even impressed, and they were pre-teens at the time.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the grandparents question. I’ll pop over in a bit to read your post!

  7. This was a good one! I had a hard time coming up with the answers but I also loved that it was different and people get to know me based on my unique answers. Can’t wait til next month!

  8. Such funny questions, Marsha!! My favourite pirate would definitely be Captain Jack Sparrow too lol!
    Hugs
    Suzy

  9. The stupid question one is funny!

    • I thought it would be an easy one to answer, but I would have had to work harder if I hadn’t remembered that particular stupid question!

      Thanks, Dara, for coming by!

  10. Yay, remembered to do my post…lol. They did require some googling but they were fun. I loved your answers. I am Nonni by my grandkids. I have two. We have more evergreen trees on our property so we don’t need to rake, and the trees that do drop, my hubby just takes the blower to them. That “stupid question” was quite interesting…lol.

    • Oh, I’m so glad you did, Kirstin! I just popped over to your blog and read your answers. I had to google for many of my answers, toojust didn’t want to be Grandma Banks because that was my mother-in-law!

We had lots of evergreens on that same property, and it’s not that I really miss the leaves as much as having the freedom to do what you want with your own yard.

      Thanks for coming by, Kirstin!

  11. Oh my goodness, the twins question. Wow! I needed that laugh.

  12. Enjoyed your answers to these! I never thought about grandkids as a good 9 letter word – duh!! Your stupid question reminded me of when random people would ask me “do you know what you’re having?” when I was pregnant. Well, I know what they meant, but I thought it intrusive, and we didn’t find out the sex of the baby ahead of time, so I would answer, “Well, I certainly hope it’s a baby! I wouldn’t know what to do with puppies!” and walk away. Ask a stupid question . . . get a stupid answer. LOL

    • Oh, that is a fabulous answer! Back when I was having my kids, it was rare for women to find out what they were having…at least in my neck of the woods. I was thrilled when I counted up the letters in grandkids because that was the perfect answer for me!

      Thanks, Kym, for coming by!

  13. Marsha, I think these questions were interesting and fun to answer! I did have to think a little harder than usual and do a little research, but it was still really fun! I saw Patsy Cline on the September birthday list that I checked and I almost picked her as my answer because she was one of my mom’s favorite singers of all time. I grew up listening to Patsy Cline, Elvis, and The Beatles. Are there people who really don’t like Captain Jack Sparrow? I didn’t choose him just because I thought he was such an obvious choice, but I do love him! And as for Johnny Deep, I have loved him since his 21 Jump Street Days, too. I know he can be a controversial figure in light of the AH trial. Did you watch the documentary on that? All I can say is wow! I have met women like AH. And while JD might be a bit strange as most artistic humans are, I find AH to be more on the dangerous side as far as humans go. Enough of my opinion on that topic! Have a fabulous day, my friend. And thanks for hosting this fun series!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I knew they would be hard to answer because they were so hard to write! I am not a big fan of country music, but I do love Patsy Cline. I used to sing along to her songs all the time. Oh, yes, I watched the documentary. I actually watched most of the trial through a YouTube channel I like…Emily D. Baker. You would probably like her, too. She is an attorney and covers pop culture trials. She did hours and hours on the trial and is actually featured in the documentary. She wasn’t consulted about the use of her content for it, though! I agree with you about AH. As a woman, I wanted to believe her, but she just wasn’t believable. Maybe it was her demeanor. A lot of it was the tapes of her admitting to hitting JD. I was so disappointed in him when he left the mother of his children for AH (like he cares).
