10 on the 10th: September!

Was it just me, or did August just kinda make an appearance and then completely disappear? I think, at least for me, it’s because almost every August day was the same as the one before it…sunny and warm with no rain! I know, I know! I’ve been harping on the rain thing long enough, but my front yard is the color and texture of a field of straw. I miss seeing it green. I’m beginning to wonder if, in my lifetime, Central Indiana won’t become one of those places where you have grassless yards. I sure hope not. I mean, I love rocks, but I don’t love them that much! Anyhoo, it’s time for this month’s 10 on the 10th. I made it harder than I thought. I confess, right now, I fully googled words that end in ber!

Without further ado…

Cobbler – What better way to start off the -ber months than to think of cobbler?  I love a good cobbler, especially when it’s more cobbler than fruit!  If I had to pick a favorite it would be blueberry with a bit of ice cream on top!

Beachcomber – Ah, I love the beach, and I am rarely there.  Nigel is not a fan of water of any kind (weird, right) so our vacations rarely revolve around a beach.  But, there’s something so relaxing and wonderful about walking along the beach, looking for treasures some pirate forgot.

Cucumber – I love a cucumber!  I often order salads with extra cucumbers on them.  One of my core memories is sitting in our next door neighbor’s garden, in the middle of the cucumber vines, gnawing away at a nice big cucumber!  It was still dirty, I’m sure.  But, seriously, is there anything better than a freshly picked, home grown cucumber?  Well, yes, there are lots, but I still love cucumbers!

Microfiber – I’m never going to win a Suzy Homemaker award when it comes to house cleaning.  I have bought so many gizmos and gadgets over the years that were supposed to make my life easier.  I spent way too many $$$ on Norwex products that promised perfection in dusting.  I won’t tell you that a Norwex “consultant” told me I was supposed to get that handy dandy little dusting mitt wet first!  Nope, I won’t tell you I told her there was no way I was putting a wet cloth on my good wood furniture.  Not gonna tell you that.  But, a cheap microfiber cloth is truly magic!  I bought a package of eleventy million when we moved into our current house.  I needed some cloths and bought these.  So, here’s the thing. For one reason or another, our house is really dusty.  I would use those fancy schmancy Norwex products on my furniture.  The next day, the dust would be there again.  One day, I grabbed one of my pennies on the dollar microfiber cloth, and the dust was gone for weeks!  I also use them to clean my glasses, my dishwasher.  I even use one in the shower!

October – Well, this is definitely the best month of the entire year because yours truly was born during this month!  It’s also the month when trees seem to be the most beautiful.  I also decorate the house with all the fun and gorgeous pumpkins I’ve collected over the years.

December – Of course, I had to include this month because of Christmas.  I love Christmas and all the trappings.  I love to buy the presents (but hate wrapping them), bake the cookies (but hate decorating them), and visit Winterlights at Newfields.  It’s also a time when my family gets together.  It’s rare that happens even though we all live relatively close.

Subscriber – Once upon a time, I subscribed to magazines…remember those?  These days, I subscribe to blogs.  I love the interaction with the bloggers.  And, of course, I love having subscribers for my blog.

Tuber – I like this word for no reason other than it makes me laugh!  Go on, I dare you!  Say, “Tuber,” and see if you don’t at the very least grin!

Slumber – Except for a time in the early aughts, I have always been a good sleeper.  I am definitely a night owl, but that’s changed a bit lately.  Nigel gets up frequently so I get up with him.  I’m finding there are nights I’m actually asleep before 11:00pm!  When life gets back to normal, my bedtime will probably be 1:30 or 2:00am.

I love decorating my bedroom for Christmas!

Ember – Ah, I miss having a fireplace.  When we decided to build this condo, we nixed the idea of a fireplace.  Of our five homes, only two didn’t have a fireplace.  That’s including our current home.  At the time, Nigel was concerned with keeping the bottom line within a certain amount.  I didn’t want to give up a wall for a fireplace, and the ones I’d seen in houses our builder had done weren’t that great.  Now, though, I miss those glowing embers on cool fall nights as well as brutally cold winter nights.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I think this was the most difficult 10 on the 10th I’ve done so far! I really wasn’t thinking how hard it would be to just come up with words that ended in ber! So, can we talk? What is your favorite ber word? Are you a fan of the ber months? How do you feel about fireplaces? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

  1. That was really interesting!
I had started looking up words that end on -ber and had a few ideas already (cucumber was the first one), but then I did remem-ber (see what I did there, I’m such a hoot 😋) that I would have to do the same for German words and just couldn’t bring up the motivation.
Your post might have given me inspiration for a different kind of blog post, though!

    • Thanks, Cat! After your comment on the preview, I started thinking about how, exactly, you could do such a thing! It would have to be two of them, right? Yes, I agree…you are a hoot! Oh, I’m on tenterhooks for that now!

  2. This is the first time I’ve heard the months collectively called the ‘Ber’ months. I have never thought about it before.
Bedtime at 1 or 2 am? I’m a morning person, so it’s early to bed for me, although I will read before turning out the light.
I am searching around for ‘ber’ words and there is one staring me in the face – Amber!

    • Thanks, Rosie! Hahaha!! It took me a moment to come up with the Amber staring you in the face! Many people commented on the ber months, and I have to admit I think this is the first year I’ve heard of it, too. I have never been a morning person even when I was teaching. But, I wasn’t a night owl as I am now. I needed that sleep! I have tried to convert, but my body refuses!

  3. This was so interesting Marsha , I hadn’t heard the term ber months before. I also have a birthday in them but mine is November. My goodness you are a night owl – those days are long gone for me. I hope you are having a good September.

    • Thanks, Jill! I hadn’t heard of them until this year, too. Maybe it’s a new thing? I am definitely a night owl, but I do sleep late. I hope your September is quite wonderful as you can get out in your beautiful garden and drive with the top down on that lovely car!

  5. We call it ‘the ember month’ over here. There’s just something so cozy and magical about a fireplace, especially around the holidays. It’s a centerpiece for warmth and ambiance that’s really hard to replace.

    • Thanks, Benita! Oh, I like that! I really do miss having a fireplace, but it’s probably too late now as our house is all brick. Maybe the next house…hahaha…Mike would not go for that at all!

  6. I have never done much decorating in my bedroom. But you inspired me. I just added some fall coziness in there. Thanks for the push:) And for the challenge on this ten on the tenth!! It was fun!!

    • Thanks, Jennifer! I enjoyed your post. I’m so glad I inspired you to decorate your bedroom. I only started doing mine about six or seven years ago because I’d seen a Pinterest pin!

  7. Now I learned something new – I had never heard of the ‘ber’ months before! Nice job with this prompt!
    xo,
    Kellyann

  8. Very inventive…especially the tuber. I might start making up words like sweatbers (handmade sweaters?) and bootbers (boots worn in the fall and winter). LOL
    XOOX
    Jodie

    • Hahaha!!! I love sweatbers! But, truly, you should do a post about boob-bers since you do so many posts on strapless bras and alternatives to them! Thanks, Jodie!

  9. I Googled words that ended in Ber too and could not come up with 10! LOL. Gosh we didn’t get into bed until 1:30 am this morning and I am DRAGGING today. I typically am in bed by 8:30/9 even though I don’t really fall asleep until around 10 but it seems like no matter what I’m up around 4:30/5 and have a hard time falling back to sleep.

    • Thanks, Joanne! I would definitely be dragging if I got up at 4:30 and hadn’t gone to sleep until 1:30. I used to be that way when I was teaching. Now, I wake up whenever. It’s always a different time!

  10. Hi Marsha! I too was born in October, so I’m with you on it being a fabulous month. Not just because of my birthday, though. I also love the cooler (but not too cold) temperatures and the fall leaves. I like the occasional pumpkin treat and Halloween decorations.

  11. This was a cute one. I was born in one of the Ber months but I prefer Spring I am not ready for the darkness that comes at 6pm but I do like to decorate so that is what I’m looking forward too.

    • Thanks, Kita! I really do like the early darkness because I have lots of lamps and like the cozy feeling they create. I’ll be over to read your post in a bit.

  13. Great list! Not surprisingly, I had a few of the same words on my list. I so agree about loving a fireplace in the home. We do have a gas fireplace here but don’t use it that often – probably because the gas flame isn’t quite the same, though I do appreciate it!

    • Thanks, Kym! Our last two fireplaces were gas and could definitely pass for the real thing. The first fireplace was humongous and at our very first house. Mike actually helped to build it. But, it didn’t put out the same heat as the gas ones did.

  14. Delightful! Though I adore the summer, it feels great to head into fall and all the nostalgic warmth it holds. And you are always welcome to enjoy our roaring fire! It was a big hit this past winter.

  16. This was really fun!! And definitely one to get the gray matter kicking!

  17. What a fun post! I love all these words too. Ember is a good one and nothing beats a good cobbler!
