The Beauty & Style Spotlight Team!

On April 22, 1970, the very first Earth Day occurred. This grew out of a number of incidents, chief among them was an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. This oil spill dumped more than 3 million gallons of oil into the ocean. The resulting oil slick killed more than 10,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions. Initially, John McConnell, a peace activist, spoke at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco. He suggested a day to honor the Earth as well as the concept of peace. The first day of Spring (in the northern hemisphere), March 21, 1970 was proposed. The UN as well as the US congress got in on the action and proposed different ideas for this inaugural event. I’m not quite sure why it was moved to April 22, though. In 1990, Denis Hayes took the event international and organized events in 141 nations. How will you celebrate Earth Day this year?
