July 10 on the 10th Preview!

As I type this, the people in the neighborhoods all around us are having a whale of a good time letting off fireworks. I don’t like the Fourth of July. There, I said it. My poor Jack doesn’t understand the booms that start at around 6:00 and last until well after midnight. Legally, they can start the day before and go until the day after a holiday like the Fourth. And, they can go until 1:00am, I think, on those days. He just comes to me and wants to be held. I don’t mind that, but I can feel him trembling. I know, I know…I sound like a curmudgeon. I wish these neighborhoods would have just one big party instead of everyone going out and buying these fireworks. Honestly, I’m pretty sure a lot of them are illegal because our house literally shakes when some of those big boomers go off. Don’t quote me on this, but I think people who purchase these just have to sign a paper saying they’re not going to let them off in the state…wink, wink. Anyhoo, that brings me to the 10 on the 10th for July. Since we are well and truly in the dog days (or is it dog daze) of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, I thought we’d go with a dog theme. So, this one has a lot of leeway. Tell us or show us your 10 favorite dogs. They can be dogs you’ve owned, grew up with, are on tv, dog food cans, whatever!

It’s rather ironic I’m doing this for dogs because, deep down, I’m really a cat person. We always had a cat when I was a kid. Somehow or other, we’ve had dogs for the last several years. But, when Jack crosses the Rainbow Bridge, I’m done with pets. I’ll just love on my grandanimals.  And, don’t forget, there will be a link party!

Thank you!

  1. I know what you mean Marsha, here the fireworks are all around Guy Fawkes night in November and they start about a week before and carry on a week after. We don’t have any pets but I really feel for anyone who does.

    • Thanks, Rosie! I am so glad we don’t have that. It’s usually just a day before and a day after if the holiday falls on a weekend.

  2. It’s not just the pets suffering, but also people and especially the wildlife. I hate fireworks and wish they would ban private ones.

    • Thanks, Cat! I’m with you! Here’s one of those…when I was a kid…but when I was a kid, nobody set off the big boomers at their homes. They went to the community fireworks. I worry about vets and kids with PTSD. Those booms have to wreak havoc on them.

  3. Legally, fireworks aren’t allowed in our state (other than things like sparklers or fountains) but lots of people sneak over into New Hampshire and buy them anyway. We heard some last weekend, we saw tons last night and I’m sure there will be even more tonight and probably tomorrow too. I’m definitely more of a cat person too; in fact I have a pretty big fear of dogs that has persisted since childhood.

    • That’s the way it is here, too, I think. As I write this, it’s been storming so there weren’t any tonight (Sunday). That just means they’ll set them off next weekend. My daughter had a huge fear of dogs after being bitten…she now has a huge grey Lab! Thanks, Joanne!

  4. our dog hates gunfire and fireworks and she has been getting so nervous she just paces back and forth and goes to each of the family members and paws at them. Last night I finally got a clue – after an hour of her pawing and pacing and refusing to settle – to close all the windows and turn on the fan for some whitenoise. Google helped me on this too. Then I wrapped a blanket around her (thankfully yesterday was a cool day) and rubbed her temples and she started to close her eyes and finall flopped over and fell asleep. The poor thing had had a long day at my parents, running all over their property, and I knew she had to be exhausted. She laid next to me asleep under that blanket for a good hour.

    • You are a good dog mom, Lisa. I’m glad you were able to ease her fears. Jack doesn’t like to lie under covers. Our other Westies definitely did. He’s about as different from them as can be. Poor Zooma. I think they must be able to hear that shrill noise just before the boom so they know something bad is coming. Jack isn’t bothered by thunder. Luckily, he hasn’t heard any gunfire…at least, I don’t think he has. Thanks, Lisa!

  5. We even have a law, that starts in 2 years, where it’s forbidden to use fireworks on new years eve. I’m glad it is, I don’t like it either. Have a great Sunday!

    • Oh, that would be wonderful. New Years may be even worse than the Fourth. As I’m writing this, we are in the middle of big storm which is good because we need rain! Thanks, Nancy!

  6. It was a free for all around here on the 4th. Because it’s so very very dry here, we are not allowed to shoot off fireworks independently. But no one read the rules. I love dogs. We have cats and I love them too. But I’m probably a dog person. LOL.

    • I was kinda surprised at how quickly the noise stopped after midnight. It has been very dry here so I was surprised there wasn’t some kind of warning put out. I like dogs, but, deep down, I’m definitely a cat person! Thanks, Leslie!
