Style Imitating Art…
It’s time for another round of Style Imitating Art! A few years ago, I joined Shelbee and Salazar as curators for SIA. We begin with a piece of art, create looks based upon that art, and share them on our blogs. Think of it as fashion meets art museum! Anyone and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. You don’t have to be a blogger to participate, either! Shelbee selected our inspiration artwork this week.
How it works…
Here are the details: Every other Monday, one of us will select a piece of art. That is shared via all three co-hosts’ blogs. On the following Monday, all three share their looks on their blogs. If you choose to participate, send a photo to the curator for that particular week. You, as well as the other participants, will be featured on the curator’s post that Wednesday. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! If you decide to play along this time, please send your photo to Shelbee by Tuesday, April 21st at 10:00 pm EST to be included. I hope you will join us! I think this could be the best way to start something new! Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to be a part of this. You can snap a photo and send it in. We love to have readers join in on the fun, too.
Why…
Shelbee wrote, “Since our last few artworks have all been abundant with varieties of colors, I have chosen a more neutral piece for this challenge. Actually, I am going to use the artist’s entire portfolio as our inspiration. Karen Hawkins is an American artist from Texas who creates art and sculptures using old book pages. Since book pages come in a very limited color palette and her work is really cool and very intricate, I think we can each choose whichever piece we want as inspiration…or her entire portfolio. I would love some of her totems in my house somewhere! Photos are due to me by April 21 (the day before Earth Day which is perfect for art that uses recycled materials!)” I decided to go with one of Hawkins’ Jellyroll pieces because I love all the color. I know Shelbee wanted to go neutral, but I just don’t have that much when it comes to neutral!

Not appalling. There are soooo many books out there that will never be read again. Just take old encyclopedias or dictionaries or out of date textbooks. We honestly don’t need them to stand around in large quantities taking up space.
As a librarian of a library with full shelves I know what I’m talking about. You just have to pick the right books (and some are better as art than as books 😉 ).
That’s a very cool piece, I can’t wait to see what you do with it, Marsha!
Thanks, Cat! It’s good to know destroying old books is librarian approved! I had forgotten about encyclopedias and dictionaries. I don’t think today’s kids would even know how to use them! I may have to go thrifting to create my own art! I need to get that picked out and photographed this weekend!
