A middle school concert, that is
Last week, we were able to see our oldest granddaughter in a middle school concert. Nigel and I are not big concert goers…well, Nigel isn’t. We’ve seen Gordon Lightfoot and Willie Nelson in concert. My youngest son and I saw Paul McCartney twice in concert. I cried out of excitement and exhilaration! Nigel doesn’t like concerts because of all of the people. During a regular year, this particular middle school concert (which is actually a competition) would have been packed. But, Covid is still raging in Indiana so only family of the performers were admitted into the auditorium during the performance.
There’s just something about a cafeteria.
We had to be there early so the ensemble could practice. We wandered around the school for a bit and found the cafeteria. I looked at Nigel and asked him if he was up for a photoshoot. He said, “Why not?” I thought this mural was interesting as well as being in the cafeteria. I mean, that’s just what tweens want to look at during lunch, right? And, this is middle school so 4 x 3 = 12 is the best they could do? Always a critic, right? Well, I’ve spent an hour or one thousand (maybe hyperbole there) in a school cafeteria so I can offer an informed opinion! And, no one wants to see a math fact on the wall while they eat!
Rule follower for life
Nigel told me I should take my mask off, but I am a rule follower. No one was around, and I suppose I could have taken it off. But, the rule was to wear a mask so wear a mask I did! Besides, I didn’t have to worry about my smile! If you look closely, I am smizing for all I’m worth!
The performance
And, just like the Paul McCartney concert, I cried while watching our granddaughter’s ensemble sing. She was so happy to be able to sing with her friends. She had gotten up even earlier than usual to get to school to practice for this competition. I’m so happy to report their ensemble received a gold medal.
A little nostalgic
Ah, I miss the smells of a school. Sure, there’s a stink to it, too. But, there’s that bouquet of last week’s broccoli, this week’s chicken nuggets, eraser dust, and old books. It’s an aroma I would recognize if I were blindfolded.
The Lewk
I wore an old cardigan (coatigan?) from J Jill, a chambray shirt from Old Navy, and these wonderful leggings (limited sizes). I have to tell you these boots are fast becoming my favorites! They are so comfortable (I do wear an orthotic with them), and that side zipper makes them easy to get on and off! My jewelry (ring, bracelet, earrings) is all from the John Hardy bamboo collection. For each piece of bamboo jewelry purchased, the company plants bamboo in Bali. My Norwegian boyfriends influenced me to knit my scarf.
Wrap it up, Marsha!
You can’t tell from this photo, but my granddaughter is a few inches taller than me. And, check out those curls! Those are her natural curls! Her hair is so thick and curly! She did not get that from me! How about you? Have you been able to attend any concerts or events you’ve had to miss for a couple of years now? Are there places you can identify by their smells? Leave me a comment or two, and we can have a conversation! As always, thanks for reading my blog!

I’m a rule follower too! And I never have seen Paul McCartney but I sure would want too. Band on the run is my favourite.
Oh, Nancy, it was so magical the first time we saw him. We were close enough not to have to watch the jumbo tron. I just stood there and cried. I’m a huge Beatles fan, and my son inherited that from me!
Love your look! I saw , on Instagram what looked like a Stella & Dot necklace that I also have. Funny that you have a knitted piece too because I just published a knitting post today. I am glad you finally got to go to a concert. Our symphony opened up but only those of us with vaccination cards get to go-it’s so nice to finally get to hear music live again.
I absolutely LOVE your boots too.Take care, Terri
My daughter sold Stella & Dot for a bit so I have quite a few pieces. And, when she quit, a very good friend started! Would you believe this scarf took me forever? I think it was because it was kind of boring to knit. I think I’m going to have to try those mitts of yours. I love Malabrigo…they are so luxe! I need to find a local yarn store. These boots are so comfortable. I always get comments on them.
It was nice to go to this concert though we rarely go to any. It was even better to just show up for my granddaughter.
Thanks for coming by!
Funny enough I am wearing black boots, leggings, a denim button down shirt and a long cardigan today! (though my cardigan is plain gray)
It’s just such an easy yet cool look, right? If I had a winter uniform, this might be it!
How wonderful you were able to go see her in action. What a true blessing!!
And what a fabulous scarf Marsha!! I needed to see a closeup of it.
XOXO

It was simply wonderful to see her sing. She is such a beautiful young woman (I’m not in the least biased) and to see her grow is amazing. I’m sorry I didn’t have a closeup. I think I have a very old blog post where you can see it. It’s basically just garter stitch. You change yarns at the end of every row and leave a few inches for the fringe which you tie off. I started out with a color scheme in mind and then decided to just use all kinds of colors. I think it’s a tad long, but it’s very warm!
Great that you get to see her perform…lovely outfit dear 🙂

Thank you so much! It was wonderful!
How wonderful to see your granddaughter at a concert and also that you were told to wear a mask – so sensible and right! And wow those boots – I like!
Oh and double wow! Paul McCartney! Some years ago we saw Sting live and also Sade, But when we were young, Mr F saw David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust days and I saw the Rolling Stones when they were really, really young at a local cinema acting as a theatre – they were almost drowned out by the screams – remember those! Actually my main memory is how skinny they were! Never saw the Beatles and wish I had but now you’ve got me on a memory roll I remember seeing the Dave Clark Five and Dusty Springfield. Great post!
Oh, Penny, I am so jealous! I never saw the Beatles live…I wasn’t old enough and my mom certainly would never have driven me the miles to the venue! My daughter-in-law’s mom did see them in Chicago! But, that night seeing Paul McCartney was simply magical! Oh, and Mr. F saw David Bowie! Wow, wow, wow! My son and I (the one with whom I saw Sir Paul) frequently go the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’m always amazed at how small the costumes were! I believe they rotate them as the last time, some of Freddy Mercury’s costumes were not there. But, John Lennon’s iconic New York tee is there…and it is little!
It was so wonderful to see A perform. She loves to sing and is just the most beautiful young woman! I was so glad Nigel and I went…masks and all. The singers were allowed to remove their masks for only the time they were on stage…a matter of minutes! And, these boots…they actually remind me of yours!
I’m so glad you came by and that I helped you go down Memory Lane!
Perfect look for this concert! I love the scarf especially. I love going to see my kids play at their concerts at school. There is always so much nostalgia. My first concert was Jimmy Buffet with my parents when I was young. They had no idea what they were getting into. Lol!

My oldest son loves Jimmy Buffet so much he has a parrot tattoo! It has been years since school concerts or even graduations. But, now, with my grandkids getting older, we shall attend more, I hope!
Haven’t been to a concert or theatre for two years. Determined to start booking things. I wouldn’t have taken my mask off either.
We keep talking about a little getaway but decide against it as who knows what will happen next. I wonder if we shall ever see a return to just going somewhere at a moment’s notice. I’m very much a rule follower, but I would have worn a mask anyway!
So exciting that school events are back in person again! Congrats to your granddaughter on her gold medal!
Jill – Doused in Pink
Thanks, Jill! We moved here so that we could attend grandkids’ events. I’m so glad we were able to see this concert!
I’m glad you could go to your granddaughter’s concert, and I love what you chose to wear. Congrats to your granddaughter and her team on the gold medal!

Thank you so much, Lovely! It was wonderful to watch her doing something she loves! She is a gorgeous young woman if I do say so myself!
This is a fantastic look, Marsha! My grandson has those curls too. He just turned five. Sounds like it was a lovely concert.
Michelle
https://mybijoulifeonline.com,
Thanks, Michelle! It’s so funny to look at pictures of her as a little two or three year old when her hair was still fine. Now, you can’t (and shouldn’t, I guess) run a comb through it. Her mom has my type of hair; her dad has hair similar to hers. It was so fun to see her doing what she loves! And, I’ll bet your grandson’s curls are adorable…or would they be handsome? Five is a fun age!
