An Instagram Hack!

And, it works!

I have the absolute simplest Instagram hack for you! Do you ever struggle to put on a bracelet? You know, the ones with the lobster claw clasps? I always have, especially when I used to have my nails done. A few days ago, as I was scrolling through Instagram, I happened to pause on a reel or a story…to be honest, I don’t know the difference! And, boy howdy! It is so easy. Even better, it really works!

Seriously, you only need one thing!

Now, I’m willing to bet most of you have this one little thing you’ll need to clasp that bracelet! Anyone want to guess what it is? It’s a bobby pin! Did you know a bobby pin is not the same thing as a hair pin? I’ve always used them interchangeably. A bobby pin is the pin that is straight on one side. A hair pin is squiggly on both sides. Here is information about using a hair pin. I wonder if even I could have an updo with a hair pin or two! But, for my trick, you need a bobby pin…straight on one side and squiggly on the other!

Insert the bobby pin into the jump ring of your bracelet. Pull the bobby pin down so that the opening of the pin is now secured in your jump ring.

Next, grab the ends of the bobby pin with the fingers of the hand you’re putting the bracelet on and hold it against your palm. With your opposite hand, guide the lobster claw to the jump ring and attach it!

Et Voila !

Look at all of those wisdom spots!

Was I kidding? Isn’t that the easiest of all hacks? I cannot tell you how many cursey words have filled the air as I’ve struggled to put on a bracelet. One time, I took all of my bracelets, tore off the cursed lobster claw clasps, and replaced them with toggle findings. I really wish I hadn’t done that because toggles are just as tricky! Hmmm, I wonder if there’s an Instagram hack for that!

An easy on, easy off outfit!

Oh, I need a pedicure!

Are you giggling? I’m serious…this is an easy on/easy off outfit. Last year, I had to have carpal tunnel release surgery. This was right at the very beginning of the opening up here in Central Indiana. I had had surgery scheduled right before the lockdowns began. My surgery was considered elective so it was postponed. If you’ve ever had that particular pain, you know how excruciating it can be. It was kind of weird because a large part of my hand was numb yet sharp pains would travel from my fingertips to my elbows. Due to restrictions, Nigel wasn’t able to come into the hospital with me. That wasn’t a big deal…until after surgery when I had to get dressed! My right hand was completely numb and heavily bandaged. I had practiced at home getting dressed with one hand, and this outfit fit the bill! I could pull on the pants and top with one hand, even my left hand!

The second surgery…

My second surgery took place a month or so later. I think it may have been worse because I knew what to expect. By that time, my right hand had healed fairly well though parts of it were still numb. I was awake during both surgeries…completely awake. Neither surgery lasted very long. The prep took longer than the procedure! I am always amazed (though I shouldn’t be) by the kindness and understanding of nurses, technicians, and doctors in operating rooms. They really do make you as comfortable as possible (even before the good stuff that knocks you out)! I thought about becoming a nurse…you’ll soon see why that wasn’t meant to be!

Vasovagal syncope

I have a tendency to faint in medical situations. The first time this occurred was when I visited my grandpa in the hospital when I was a teenager. Luckily, I realized I was about to faint and did what I had to do…put my head between my knees! Vasovagal syncope happens when you are triggered by something. In my case, it’s the presence of really serious looking medical equipment. My daughter broke her ankle in sixth grade and had to have surgery. When they removed her cast, I had to sit down…very embarrassing! But, I’m really good in true emergency situations! It seems to be the anticipation of the situation that creates the fainting. It doesn’t even matter when I’m lying down. I fell off a ladder many years ago…long story…and had to have stitches. While I was lying on the bed in the ER and the doctor was stitching me up, I realized I was about to faint. So, I asked if I could just go ahead and faint. The doctor said no! Knowing I needed something to distract myself, I asked him about the first time he saw a human cadaver! Can you imagine what he must have thought? I felt that same anxiety during both surgeries so, of course, I talked!!!

All’s well…

Luckily, I have lots of experience with incisions and scars, mine and Nigel’s. Did you know you have to massage a healed incision? If you don’t massage it, scar tissue forms. You don’t want that scar tissue so you massage it to break it up. Of course, you need to wait until it’s completely healed before you massage it. It took several weeks before my hands returned to normal. My surgeon was wonderful! You can’t even see the scars unless you look closely. I asked him if he’d done well in embroidery class! He just laughed!

The Lewk!

This top is one of my first ever Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchases. It’s by Free People and is probably six years old. I have to wear a navy tank underneath it. If you look closely, you can see my skin through the lace. What you can’t see is the lace actually runs from shoulder to hem in several places. If I just wore a navy or black bra, your eye would focus on that peek of skin instead of the top. And, truly, the top is the star…other than me, that is! The tank is just a navy one I found at Old Navy. The leggings are J Jill (seen here) and are not a perfect match to the shirt but go well with the shoes. The shoes are Pikolinos (similar) and are so very comfortable. My earrings are old from eBay. They are also very heavy! My necklace (here) and bracelets (here, here, and here) are all Lagos.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

You just never know what you’re going to get from me, right? Honestly, I only wanted to tell you about this neat Instagram hack! And, then I had to explain the outfit!! I actually didn’t wear these leggings when I had surgery. I have a pair of capri length workout tights that I wore. No way would I have been able to pull on full length leggings! So, can we talk? Do you have any nifty Instagram hacks? Or, maybe a Pinterest hack? I do love a good hack (that really works). What I love even more is having a conversation with you. Please leave a comment or two, and we can have one! Thanks, as always, to my subscribers! I do appreciate each and every one of you!

  1. Whaaaaa, need to try that!! I have so many bracelets I can’t wear when I’m alone at home! What a idea. Will let you know if it works for me, lol.

  2. That is a great hack! Most of my bracelets are elastic for that reason. I get queasy at the sight of blood and did nearly faint when I was in high school working on our play sets when one of the boys pricked his fingers with those long drapery hooks and started dropping beads of blood around the room. He was much more concerned about me than anyone was about him… but I think having had kids has toughened me up as they all seemed to be quite accident prone and bloody when they were little and I was the only one home.

    • Blood doesn’t bother me…it’s the medical equipment, I think. That, and the anticipation, would make me so woozy! I only have a few bracelets with that kind of closure, too! Now, I know what to do should I get any more!

  3. Marsha, you are just so fun! I love reading your blog. I need to save this for that bracelet hack and try it. My younger son fainted when he was getting ready for surgery and he hates needles. Thank goodness he was already lying down when he fainted!

    Kellyann

    • Hahaha! I’m glad you enjoy it, Kellyann! Sometimes, my inner stand up comedian comes out…you probably worked with a few of them in schools! You’ll have to give the bracelet hack a try…I was honestly shocked at how easy it was! Oh, yeah, I also fainted when I got my ears pierced! And, flu shots in the fall always found me on the floor! (After giving birth, shots are no big deal!)

  4. This is genius! Thank you so much for sharing this! I can’t wait to try it out for myself. I also didn’t know the difference between bobby pin and hair pin. Good to know because I use both!

  5. I have seen this. Do you know they actually have a tool that does this same thing. It’s called a bracelet buddy and I have one (my mom bought it for me): https://amzn.to/370hUzk
But my favorite closures for bracelets are magnets (maybe you could add those to yours). The only drawback is they can “catch” on the silverware!!

    • My bracelet buddy is named Nigel! Now, I can do it easily! Magnets…genius!!! My granddaughter is into making jewelry so she’s going to fix them for me!

  6. What a cool hack! I’ll be pinning this. I have tended to avoid bracelets that require a clasp because they are so aggravating.

The vaso-vagal response is so interesting in regard to triggers. When I was in medical tech training, we had to draw blood from member of the college football team. These guys had no trouble facing concussion and broken bones on the field, but having their blood drawn was quite the ordeal for some of them. And it’s something the person just has no control over.

    And I love this outfit!

    • I have heard that before about athletes. I am not queasy about blood, but I never watch when mine is drawn! I don’t know when it’s going to happen…until that aura you get before fainting. But, I do know intense medical situations cause it most often…unless it’s an emergency for someone else…no problems at all! Probably the adrenaline kicking in!

Isn’t this the best hack ever? I really didn’t think it would work!

  7. Brilliant tip about making hooking up a bracelet easy. Fabulous look too.

    • Thanks, Rena! I was amazed at how easily I was able to finally clasp that doggone bracelet! And, most of us have a bobby pin laying around!!

  8. Well I learnt a couple of things here! The bracelet hack – in the UK we call a Bobby pin a hair grip – and the name Vasavagal syndrome. Will you be sharing the 10 on the 10th questions? Love to take part in that.

    • There aren’t going to be 10 questions, Gail. It’s more a list of 10 things you MAY do in the month of May. I didn’t know about hair grips…I love learning things like that!!
