Since February, I have joined the fabulous women from Is This Mutton, MK’s Adventures in Style, Deb’s World, Grownup Glamour, Frugal Fashion Shopper, and Following My Muse for a global writing challenge. I am not a member of this group so you will need to visit one of the women above to link your posts. Mary Katherine chose this month’s prompt.
A little late…
I have been in a funk lately and am so late to writing this post, reading and commenting on other blogs. I am blaming it on the weather. But, I’ve been thinking about this post for a bit. I have not read any of the other ladies’ posts because I didn’t want that to influence my take on the prompt. So, let’s get to it.
A bit of whimsy…
Whimsy is quite the opposite of how I’ve been feeling lately! So, we will proceed to more whimsical things! Whimsy is “playfully quaint or fanciful behavior or humor” as well as “a thing that is fanciful or odd.” I couldn’t find the source for this. It’s just what came up when I googled it! I think whimsy is even more than that. Whimsy is strikingly different in a fun and over-the-top way. Whimsy is taking the ordinary and making it awesomely extraordinary. Sheila, of Ephemera, is a master (or is it mistress) of the whimsical. Her collection of Fluevog footwear is the epitome of whimsy! Please check her out…your dopamine levels will surely rise!
Whimsy continued…
When we still lived up north (which is such a dumb thing to say…it’s only 2.5 hours north), my youngest sister did my hair. I always wanted to do something fun with color, but she was very conservative about coloring it. Maybe she knew something I didn’t…I don’t know. I did finally get her to bleach one section of my hair in my bangs. It was something different and called attention away from my always-growing-out roots! One of the things I wanted to do was to dye the ends of my hair black for some sharp contrast. Again, she said nope!
A little more…
When we moved, I had to find a new hairstylist. I was lucky to find Lauren who lived down the street from me. At first, she just did the standard coloring on me. By that, I mean she just colored it the way I’d been coloring it…kind of an ash blonde color maybe. Eventually, I asked her opinion about just going grey. She encouraged me (something my sister never did) to try it. What was the worst that could happen? We’d just have to dye it if I didn’t like it. Luckily, my hair grew in silver rather than the rather ugly salt and pepper look my mom had (maybe that’s why my sister hesitated).
Teensy bit more…
I’m not sure which of us first brought up the idea of fun colors (fashion colors is the correct terminology). I have had pink hair, purple hair, blue hair, and variations on all. I’ve also had all of those colors at once. This past week, Lauren worked her magic once again. I know it’s easy for me to say this now as I’m not working. But, why not be whimsical with our hair? The woman seated beside me at the salon said, “I wish I was as brave as you are.” I almost wanted to cry for her. It was so obvious she wanted to do something other than the dak brown color on her head. I wish I’d been as carefree and brave twenty years ago as I am now when it comes to my hair. Maybe, wisdom truly does come with age!
It’s only hair…
Or, is it? I know Lauren hates that phrase. To her, “it” is so much more than hair. It’s her vocation, her passion. I’m also pretty sure, when I come in, Lauren knows we are going to have some fun! I’m open to just about anything. And, Nigel? As I’ve said before, I think he’s just glad I come back with any hair! As for me, I’m going to be as whimsical as I can with my hair for as long as I can. It is more than just hair to me, too! My hair is an extension of my style. And, I’m embracing the whimsicality of it!
Wrap it up, Marsha!
It will be interesting to read the others’ takes on whimsy. The fabulous thing about these prompts is there is no right or wrong answer. Most likely, there won’t be any repeats of topics. I hope you’ll visit the others to see what they’ve written. Once I’ve posted this, I know I will! So, can we talk? What do you consider whimsical? Do you embrace whimsy in your life? Or, is it waiting there for you in a while? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

I remember when I was at the eye doctor’s and picking out my bright pink glasses. The receptionist said that same thing to me that she wished she could wear that color. Of course, I told her she could, but when people doubt themselves it’s hard to get them to think about it a different way.
It’s probably the same with print mixing and clothes in general, right? And, of course, hair. It’s all changeable, so it’s no biggie.

I have always been bold with eye glasses because they’ve been a part of my life since I was in second grade. But, I just felt so badly for that woman. I truly do wish I had had the courage (if that’s even the right word) to do fun things like this with my hair years ago. Of course, the products didn’t exist then like they do now. This isn’t a true dye as it will fade away and not have to be cut off as my hair grows.
Thanks, Jodie!
Loved your take on whimsy. I agree about Sheila’s wonderful style, and your hair. It’s such a flamboyant, joyful thing not to be constrained – very whimsical! So glad you joined us.
Thanks, Gail! When I first started blogging, I tried to emulate Sheila’s style. As much as I love it (her style), I just couldn’t do it. I had to figure out me!
I had my hair in every colour in my puberty. Not always because of my own choice, lol. But I always loved big hair, so I always went with that! Even if it’s old fashioned. So I’m all for wearing your hair the way you love!
Thanks, Nancy! I love big hair, but I just can’t get mine to go much bigger than this!
You are so right about embracing the whimsy and doing what we want! It is more than hair, just like it’s more than clothes. It’s an extension of how feel about ourselves and I believe our mental health too! I love your hair with all the different colors, it looks so good!

Thanks, Kellyann! You are so right. I wish I had been more whimsical when I was younger in my personal life. I think I was pretty whimsical in my teaching because we (the kids and I) sure had lots of fun while learning!
Love your silver hair – welcome aboard!
Thank you so much! This was a fun prompt…a little difficult, but still lots of fun!
Hi Marsha, a great post on whimsy and yes our hair is definitely to be included in our style – you are rocking your gorgeous hair and Lauren is magical. Whimsy can be hard to determine but you have done a great job of showing us what it means to you 🙂
Thanks so much, Debbie! I wasn’t sure what to write until that poor woman in the salon said that to me. Then, I knew !
I think you are amazing for embracing color in your hair! And you look so good in all of the different hair colors, too!
Thanks so much, Laura! I think it’s because it really shows up now that my hair is silver…plus I have an adventurous stylist!
I adore your whimsical hair! It is absolutely fabulous and amazing. Unlike the woman who wasn’t as brave, I would absolutely do it, but I am don’t think I’m committed enough to keep after it, especially given my natural color is not your beautiful silver. Perfect topic for the subject of whimsy!

Thanks, Michelle! I didn’t do a lot when my hair was brown, either. One time, though, Mike and I were going to San Francisco for a long weekend. My sister didn’t have time to do my hair so I talked her into putting the color on. Then, I went home with strict instructions to wash it out after 20 minutes. I set the timer wrong on my oven and kept it on for 40 minutes! My hair was a brilliant auburn shade. In fact, the dye was still coming out of it for days after!
