A different denim dress…

I love a good denim dress. I have several in different washes. Most of them are shirt dresses. But, this one! Oh, this is so different from the others! I bought it on my trip to Asheville. You can read about that here. This is the Jackie Denim Dress. I like so many things about it…the length, the pleats, and the pockets to name a few! Unlike many other April Cornell dresses, the ties to adjust the fit are incorporated into the dress itself. Usually, they are button-on/off types of ties. This is a good weight denim. It may be too warm for summer months or for those of you who live in warm climates. And, it’s on sale in limited sizes! April Cornell has already started their Boxing Day Sale! You might not be able to nab the Jackie denim dress, but there are lots of other gorgeous dresses, pants, and skirts not to mention linens!!!

Boxing Day…

This “holiday” is celebrated primarily in countries that are or were part of the United Kingdom. It is believed to have begun as a tradition of handing out Christmas boxes containing gifts and even money to those less fortunate. Another belief is that churches set out alms boxes for additional gifts. This would have occurred during the Feast of St. Stephen which happens to be the day after Christmas. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. In the UK, a bank holiday is also observed. Boxing Day as a bank holiday is always a weekday.

A little more…

Here is where it gets interesting! If Boxing Day, December 26, falls on a Sunday, the Boxing Day bank holiday would be on December 28! The reason for that is Monday, December 27th, would be the substitute holiday for Christmas Day! Workers are not necessarily paid for bank holidays so I wonder if they have the option of working those days or not. Do you find the traditions of other countries as interesting as I do?

The Lewk!

I am still on the search for a pair of navy boots. If I had had a pair, I’m sure I would have chosen them for this look! But, perhaps, it’s a good thing I don’t! I like the contrast of my green L’Artiste Waterlilly boots! Because of the pleated bodice, I knew I didn’t want to wear a necklace. I added several bracelets from Lagos (here, here, here, here, and here). My earrings and rings are also from Lagos. All of these were gifts from Nigel over the years.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I’m keeping it short today! I just wanted to let you know about the Boxing Day sale at April Cornell. There are some really good bargains to be found. I don’t have any free shipping codes right now. If you’ve not already signed up for emails, you can get a 10% code for subscribing. As I mentioned earlier, April’s linens are also on sale. I don’t usually feature her linens, but they are just as gorgeous as the clothing! I love the tea towels and decorate for the seasons with them! So, can we talk? Are you ready for the holiday season? Have you finished decorating, baking, and shopping? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond as soon as possible!

  1. I just love the British traditions anyway. We celebrated Guy Fawkes day in November. I have a similar denim dress that I love to wear! And now that I, discovered, sweaters over dresses, I love it even more.

    • Oh, I think Guy Fawkes Day would be something to see! I have yet to make the sweater over dress thing work for me. But, I’m going to keep trying!

Have a wonderful holiday season, Nancy!

  2. I do like to learn about traditions of other countries and even other cultures! I am so ready for the holidays that I’ve been checking in with my mom and helping her get ready too; the only thing I have left to do is s bit of cleaning and I need to pick up my grocery order Saturday morning.

    • Oh, gosh…I totally forgot about the cleaning! I guess my little swiffer will do the work this time! I ran the gauntlet at the grocery store yesterday, and I think I now have everything! Have a wonderful holiday, Joane!

  3. I adore this dress Marsha! Thanks for explaining Boxing Day. I never understood what it was all about. I hope that you and Nigel have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy new year!

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I thought it was the day you boxed things up to take back! So, we both learned!

I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Stay warm!

  4. Oh wow, what a pretty dress – both in design and denim color! And yes, I do find other cultures interesting in all of their traditions. I wondered how Boxing Day got it’s name. I remember when I first heard about Boxing Day as a kid, I thought of a boxing match. LOL!

    • Thanks, Michelle! I knew you would be one who would be interested in different traditions! I always thought Boxing Day just meant it was the day you boxed up the things you were taking back!!!

  5. This dress has a delightful swishy quality! I was never clear on what Boxing Day was (and like Michelle, as a kid I thought it had to do with people boxing each other, which seemed very strange indeed) so I’m glad to have that straightened out.

    • Thanks, Sally! It definitely swishes! I actually threw it in the dryer with some damp towels to take some of the stiffness out of it. It’s even swishier now! I always thought Boxing Day was the day you boxed up everything you were taking back!

  6. Oh, oh, oh, what a fabulous denim dress, Marsha! It is such a cute cut and I love the maxi length and pleats. I have a pair of cheap navy blue ankle boots from Old Navy that I bought probably 6 or 7 years ago. I never thought I would wear them as much as I do but they have become a wardrobe staple! If I had known, I would have invested in higher quality ones! I hope you find your perfect pair. Merry Christmas, my friend!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! You know…this dress would be darling on you! But, it definitely wouldn’t be a maxi on you! Maybe, they’ll have one on super duper clearance when you go to Asheville next year! I’ve got my eye on a couple of different blue boots, but I want them to be really versatile. I’m not sure if my choices are!!

  7. I always learn something new from your posts! Love your denim dress. It looks fabulous on you and I really like the details!

  10. Do you have to look up all of the information you provide, or do you already know it, LOL??
    Merry Christmas Marsha,

    • Hahaha!!! Sometimes, I know it, but I usually fact check! I knew part of the history of boxing day, but I didn’t know how far back it went! What can I say, I love to learn!!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

  11. What a pretty dress and a cute name 😉 Thanks for sharing with #Chicandstylish today. Happy New Year to you and have a super week too. Jacqui x
