Denim Try On with Talbots

Not something I’d intended to do…

I honestly did not intend to do a denim try on. But, when all of these jeans started arriving, I thought, “Why not?” That’s what happens when you get free shipping and the store is close so returns are easy! You order multiple styles and colors! In my defense, I ordered a couple different times. I tried very hard to keep them organized by size and color! I even wore my tee tucked in so you’d get the full effect!

Talbots Stovepipe Jean, size 10

Talbots says: “Stovepipe Jeans. Endless style and comfort. Featuring a relaxed wide-leg silhouette and flawless five-pocket styling. Slim through the high waist. Just-right stretch. And a stylish frayed hem.” They feature a fly front with button closure as well as a frayed hem. I ordered these in a misses size. Talbots considers these jeans cropped with an inseam of 26 inches. The fabric is 92% Cotton, 8% Polyester, and 1% Spandex.

To be quite honest, I was really surprised these fit at all! I don’t have much luck with Talbots pant in general. But, after reading the comments (3.9 stars out of 13 reviews), I decided to take a chance. I was pretty sure they’d be too tight, but they actually fit quite well. These pictures were taken on Monday, the day after Easter…the day after the Easter Bunny comes…the day after all.of.the.carbs were eaten! While they don’t fit me like the model (as if), I do rather like them. I wish they were a hair longer though. For the price, I wouldn’t even consider chopping them off to create a cropped look. I’m not a fan of that look anyway!

Talbots Stovepipe Jean, Size 12

These are the same jeans in a size 12. This was the size I thought I’d be able to squeeze into. I like the way the legs fit better, but they feel a little sloppy. Since no one has addressed “growing” in the comments, I’m a little leery of keeping these. I think, if I lose even a couple of pounds, they will graduate from just right to sloppy big. I already have a pair or two of those jeans! I’m not sure if you can tell from the pictures. I don’t think there is much difference in fit.

And, yes, I am showing a rearview shot! You won’t see those often because I don’t have a cute butt…never have! I have a long butt, sorta flat, and rather wide right now! But, in the interests of an honest post, I thought you needed to see the rear! I think they look flattering in some of the pictures, but in others, that doggone “phantom penis” appears! You can see it in the first gallery in the first and third photos. It’s that area around the crotch that appears to bulge a bit…nuff said, right?

Talbots Everyday Relaxed Jean, size 10

Talbots says: “Everyday Relaxed Jeans. Meet our newest style of the season. Featuring an on-trend, relaxed silhouette with raw hem. Roll them up, or wear them down.” These jeans also have a fly front with button closure. Again, I ordered them in a misses size. The rolled inseam is 27 inches; unrolled, they are 28 1/4 inches. They are 91% Cotton, 8% Polyester, 1% Spandex. I’m not sure what appealed to me about these jeans when I first ordered them. I think it may have been the “relaxed silhouette”, or it could have been the 4.1 stars from 107 reviews. I find it rather humorous when a rolled jean is only rolled once! In other words, they’ve just turned the hem up! Remember, I lived through the 80s…we rolled our jeans a couple of times to achieve that perfect cuff!

These jeans came in the second order I placed. I originally ordered these in a 12 in the sea breeze wash. They felt a little big, and I wasn’t sure about the lighter wash. I decided to order these in the 10 in the darker wash as well as in the lighter wash. I do like the darker wash better, but these do absolutely nothing for my butt!!! It’s ironic these actually fit bigger than the 12! And, we’ve got “phantom penis”, dancing bear butt, and just all kinds of “aw, heck no!” going on! I’m tempted to order these again in a 10 because no way an 8 would fit!

Talbots Everyday Relaxed Jeans, size 12

This is a size larger than the darker wash. I know they don’t look particularly loose in these pictures (Easter and Peeps), but they really are on a regular day! The fabrication is the same as the darker wash as are the descriptions and inseams. These jeans have a rating of 4.7 out of 31 reviews. My butt looks pretty good for being my butt! There is, however, the faintest hint of “PP”.

I know it’s just me, but these jeans seem to need something. Have I become so used to distressed jeans that I feel like I need to rip them? I haven’t tried them with anything other than this tee (it says, “Full Time Weekender”) so maybe they’d be better. But, they’re just kinda boring, don’t you think?

Talbots Everyday Relaxed Jean, size 10

Third pair of these jeans! These are the same size (supposedly) as the dark wash! There is a world of difference in the fit! No “PP”, but there seems to be a hint of camel toe! My butt looks fine, not fabulous or anything but fine. I know I’m being hypercritical here. This is, after all, a denim review. And, I do not, as a rule, pay this amount of money for jeans. I honestly don’t. It’s kind of ironic because I spend at least 90% of my time in jeans rather than dresses. Yet, I have no problems shelling out the bucks for a floral dress!

I am really torn over these jeans…hahaha! I like the fit of the 10 so much better in the light wash. But, I like the dark wash better. I think (Friends and Family is coming up before the end of the month) I will probably try to re-order these in the dark wash in size 10 again and hope for the best! When I order jeans, shorts, or any kind of bottom from Old Navy, I frequently order a couple in the same size. When manufacturers produce large quantities of something, they usually stack the fabric and cut through the stack. As you can imagine (or know if you sew), the farther down the stack you get, the less accurate the cut is. So, your top pair of jeans may be true to the pattern, but the bottom pair…well, they’re probably going to be bigger! I’m not sure why I didn’t expect the same thing from Talbots. I should have because they buy in quantity just like Old Navy!

The Lewk!

No look here today! The sandals are L’Artiste and are a couple of years old. They are oh so comfortable. I get compliments on them regularly! I don’t think I even have earrings in other than my diamond studs. The tee is old and from Banana Republic (similar).

Something new for MitM!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I really stepped out of my comfort zone with this post! Not only am I showcasing some of my toughest to love spots (lookin’ at you, muffin top and flat derriere), but I’m also not presenting an outfit in its most flattering way! I’ll be honest. I hate sharing those sizes because for the last several years, I wore a 6 or an 8. This pandemic has been brutal in so many ways. But, I wanted the denim to be the stars of the show! So, can we talk? Which pair is best? Do you order multiples of the same size? Please leave me a comment or two, and we’ll have a conversation! Thank you to all of you who subscribe, talk about my blog, and recommend it to others! I truly do appreciate it!

  1. I have never thought of ordering multiples of the same size; for different styles sure and ordering two or even 3 different sizes yes but never the same. However, having sewn most of my life I completely get what you are saying about the multiple cuts and that makes perfect sense! I own 1 pair of Talbots jeans that I bought on clearance at the start of summer last year.

    • I’ve only ever done it with Old Navy bottoms, but, apparently I need to do it with Talbots, too! Clearance sales are the best, aren’t they?

  2. I need to remember to show rear view photos – I never remember to have my husband snap photos like that. My rear is the same, flat! I have never tried Talbot’s denim, you did a great, comprehensive review Marsha and so brave of you on the day after Easter! Congrats on the affiliate links!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! I really didn’t want to show my derriere, but now that I’ve done it, I’m hoping it will get easier (and hopefully smaller)!

  3. I think this a brilliant post, Marsha! Very honest too. Personally, I don’t think you have a flat butt in these photos…but I know we all have things about ourselves that we don’t like. I think you look great in all the jeans! I prefer the ones that are a tad longer though. I laughed so hard when you talked about the PP!!! So funny! That’s not something that bothers me…camel toe on the other hand….!!!!

    • I do like my jeans to be longer…sometimes too long I imagine! PP didn’t bother me until I heard of it…now, I see it all of the time (on me, on me…I’m not checking out crotchular areas on other women)! Oh, and camel toe can be just downright painful, right?

      • Ooooh you really made laugh again, Marsha!!! My husband drives me mad because he’s always walking around with his ‘flies’ undone (is that an American term too….with his zip down or buttons open?). I have to tell him EVERY SINGLE DAY to do them up!!! He says nobody is looking…but he’s wrong. People do notice LOL!!!

        • Hahaha!!! My husband has gotten to the point he thinks jeans (or hard pants as he now calls them) are dress up! He doesn’t walk around with his fly undone, but let’s just say his “soft pants” are always riding so much lower than I prefer!!! My kids and kids-in-law always roll their eyes when he’s working on something because we’ve all just gotten used to seeing that bit of him we’d really rather not see! But, if I’m ever in Portugal, I’m going to be looking for the dude with the fly not done up…then, I’ll know you’re around somewhere!

  4. Yay for stepping out of your comfort zone! Glad you are going to try for the smaller size. They are gonna stretch out and be too big. I really like the light wash relaxed pair on you. I think you look fabulous in those!

    https://www.kathrineeldridge.com

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I think those are my favorites, too! But, I think I’m still going to order the same pair in the dark wash again.

  5. You are hilarious! PP? camel toe?? I actually laughed out loud.
You and I have the same problem – no butt.

    • Oh, I hope you weren’t drinking anything! I always know when I’ve overweight because my butt gets rounder. Ordinarily, it’s pretty flat!!! Thanks, Kathy!!!!

  6. I’d never heard that term PP, and it cracked me up.
I think it’s good to show the rear view, because just as many people see you from that angle as from the front.
As for no butt, that’s why I was so gaga about the ruched leggings (did you see my post on IG?) And for $10 too. I mean, I may never go back to regular leggings now. (BTW, I showed a comparison of regular leggings to the ruched ones, in one of my highlight reels)

    • I’m not sure where I heard of PP, but now that I know about it, I see it all of the time! Obviously, I’d rather not show my behind, but if you’re doing a review, you gotta show the goods, right? I’m going to have to check for your post on IG. I’ve been a bit busy lately so I’ve not been quite as active! Thanks for the heads up!

  7. I only wear cropped jeans and wear them about 4 times a year I think. So they have to for instantly good or otherwise I couldn’t be bothered. Also don’t have a bum!

    • I think you are probably taller than me, Nancy! Cropped jeans look so good on taller people! I just look weird!

  8. I didn’t know that about the cut of fabric when manufacturers make jeans, but that makes so much sense! I need to keep that in mind when denim shopping next time!

    • I’m not sure where I read it or heard it, but it only makes sense. I’m sure the pattern is probably digital, but those knives or whatever they use would surely be duller by the time they get to the bottom of the heap. I would also think the heap is pretty high! And, I do know, from experience, when cutting something out with multiple layers, they never ever are the same…paper or fabric! So, yeah, I order multiples in the same size. Thanks for coming by!

  9. I love your honesty and sense of humor, Marsha! I think your butt is cute. Just saying’. Like you, I tend to prefer the darker wash, but they all look fine to me. I think the thing to go on when you find the ones you think look good is how they feel. I know that for me, no matter how good something looks, if I don’t like how they feel, I won’t wear them.

    • Thanks, Michelle! I am waiting for that friends and family sale to reorder the darker wash because those are truly my favorite color. But, I do tend to have so many more dark jeans than light so maybe I should keep the light? I don’t know…you’d think it was a world changing decision, right? I’m glad you like my sense of humor…I don’t know that I was ever known for that…more for sarcasm and biting wit (that’s sarcasm right there)! Thanks for thinking my butt is cute…Nigel does so I guess that makes two!!!

  10. There are so many different cuts, washes, and styles of jeans. It’s interesting to try on a variety to see what works best for you. You look great in both the size 10s and the size 12s.

    • Thanks, Carol! I actually meant to mention how little difference there was between the two sizes. It’s just what we have to do these days, right? Keep trying things until we find something that works!

      Thanks for coming by!
