Final Friday: Same Color Palette

I wasn’t sure what to call this particular version of print mixing. I’m amazed at how well these two prints went together so I decided upon same color palette! The dress is several years old and from J Jill. The kimono/top is from Johnny Was and is also several years old. If you look closely at the print, it may look familiar! It’s the same fabric on the back of this blouse which I donated shortly after taking photos! You can find the post here.

I mean…look at that glorious pattern!

Make it work…

I bought this top years ago from Johnny Was because I loved the design, the silk, and the embroidery. Unfortunately, when it finally went on sale, the only size was a large which was way too big. I thought I’d take a chance and lost…or did I? I was on the verge of donating this top, too, when I had a thought. What if I just cut it down the front and wore it as a kimono? I figured I had nothing to lose so I picked up my trusty Case (similar) scissors I may or may not have permanently borrowed from my mom and cut that top right down the middle! Right now, it is just sliced. At some point, I intend to try to mimic the edging of the blouse to ensure raveling doesn’t occur. I have to say I’m pretty proud of myself for daring to cut this beauty!

Print mixing…

There are so many ways to mix your prints or match your patterns. I usually do it purposefully, but this time was a happy accident! My dress was laying across a chair in the bedroom because I had been playing around with making a YouTube video. I threw the top down on top of the chair because I was doing some packing. I just happened to look down at the two laying there in unknowing bliss! And, voilà! A mixed print look was created! I was thrilled to see the blues as well as the backgrounds were close enough to look fabulous together.

The Lewk!

I mixed the old with the new-ish. The old are the earrings and the cuff bracelet…from eBay. When I got this cuff, I really, really wanted the Confetti cuff from David Yurman. This was probably 1/20 of the price and just as pretty, I think. The new-ish are the Sarah Flint Mirjana Wedges and the two Lagos caviar bracelets (similar, here).

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I began print mixing at a young age, and my mom wouldn’t let me out the door! That was back in the days when you didn’t wear white after Labor Day, black with navy, or wear horizontal stripes if you were plump or short! Today, just about anything goes, right? I love the challenge of finding new ways to wear old clothes. I’m trying very hard to not buy new things. We’ll see how long that lasts! So, can we talk? Do you ever have happy accidents with putting together outfits? Do you enjoy print mixing, or is that a little out of your comfort zone? Have you ever just cut something up because it didn’t work the way you wanted it? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I will respond as soon as I can. We will be moving this weekend, and our internet isn’t supposed to be put in until Wednesday so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to respond to comments or even post until later in the week!

Thank you!

  1. Definitely a happy print mixing accident! It looks quite marvelous together and the blouse looks perfect as a kimono!

  2. I love this kind of print mixing the best, with similar colours. The top looks like, delfts blauw, Google it! Lol.

  3. That’s a really good mix as normally I don’t like print mixing because it has to be subtle for me to like a print on its own let alone two together. So, no accidental pairings as I would avoid!!! Mainly I like plain colours, but this one is great and very Delph Blue which is lovely. Love your accessories and the way they are displayed – you do it so well.

I just want to wish you all the very best with your move. Having moved several times now I know how very tiring it can be – hope it all goes well.

    • Thank you so much on all fronts, Penny! We are in our new home, but the unpacking! Ugh! I cannot imagine moving as often as you have!! I was so very happy with the way this look came together. I think print mixing is one of those things you like or don’t…and, that’s ok, right? I think you have the best taste and always look so put together!!

  4. Oh wow, Marsha, it is such a pretty print mix! I love both of these prints and they really bring out the best in each other. Isn’t it so great when a perfect print mix happens by accident?! How awesome that you cut the shirt down the middle to make a kimono, too! It looks amazing! I hope the move goes as smoothly as a move can go!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I loved that the two pieces went together so well as well as how the kimono turned out! The move has been not fun at all!

  5. I love the print mixing in this look! What a great idea of change the kimono to work for you body. I adore the print! Thanks for link up!

    • Thanks so much, Kathrine! I don’t think I would have ever tried something like this if I hadn’t begun blogging and reading what others did!

  6. I’d call this magic! I absolutely love this outfit and would run out to buy if there had been links.

    • Thanks, Lesley! Both of these things are many years old so I couldn’t provide any links! But, Jodie will probably find you something similar while thrifting!

  7. Talk about serendipity! These two pieces look like they were made for each other. What a fabulous look! Yay for clothing modification too. I have a top I am considering doing the same thing to, and seeing how well yours turned out, I am now decided.

    • It is funny how things happen, right? I was thrilled when I saw how well the prints went together and even more thrilled that the cutting worked out so well!

      Thanks, Michelle!

  8. Hurray on turning your oversized top into a lovely floaty kimono! Aren’t those accidental pairings interesting? I have definitely had two things come out of the laundry together or piled on a chair together and had that same light bulb go off. I tend to be a methodical/systematic about creating outfits, but I too embrace the serendipitous juxtapositions when they happen!

    • Oh, I love that…serendipitous juxtapositions!!! Yes, I was thrilled to have the top come out ok, but I was going to get rid of it anyway! I have tried to subscribe to your blog, but it doesn’t seem to work…any ideas?

  9. I would have never thought to put these two patterns together, and I am so happy you did! You look stunning in this outfit. I am going to have to start paying closer attention to the same color pattern clothes in my closet.

    • Thanks so much, Meagan! It is funny how things happen! I’ll bet you’ve got some patterns that go together!

  10. You are a print mixing genius! I am loving the colors and prints together.

  11. That happy accident about how those two pieces came together is the BEST. That happens to me occasionally when I’m doing wash and hang two things next to each other, and think “aha”.
Cutting that top down the center is brilliant. I may have to do that with a dress I just got (and can’t return). I’m surprised you didn’t need to hem it??
    Absolutey stunning!!!!!!!!!

    • Thanks, Jodie! Oh, I hadn’t thought about that in the laundry room! No, I didn’t need to hem it because it was already hemmed. The place where I slit it will probably need something so it doesn’t ravel.

  12. Definitely a happy accident – those prints look like they were made for one another! I am partial to blue and white and just love the look Marsha!

  13. I love blue and white prints – you mixed them really nicely! I have those Mirjana wedge sandals in white and have been wearing them all summer. They’re so beautiful! xo Nipa

  14. Love this print mixing. The top styled as a kimono is beautiful.

  15. I love print mixing like this- because everything is in the same color family, you can get away with busy prints without the end-result look feeling too “loud” (although there is nothing wrong with loud!). I LOVE that you cut this blouse and turned it into a kimono- what a clever idea!

    -Ashley

    • Thanks, Ashley! It’s almost print mixing for dummies, right? And, I am so glad I decided to cut that blouse because it’s just too pretty to donate!!

  16. Love your print mixing dear! Lots of love. Wonderful Post! Have a great day!

  17. This was meant to be! I love the print mixing. And your kimono looks fantastic! That was a great idea to transform it that way.
