Welcome to the Gallery of Style! When I went looking for a piece of art, I purposely looked for a black and white image. I liked all the possibilities in this one. I hope you enjoy all the different interpretations in our Gallery of Style! If you’d like to read more about why I selected this piece of art, you can find that here. To read more about the art, the artist, and my outfit, you can find that here! But, you’ve come to see not me, but the others who have joined in on the styling for “Going to Market,” right?
Gallery of style…
First up is one of my Weekend Traffic Jam co-hosts, Sue, from Women Living Well After 50. She says, “Don’t you love it when you find an item of clothing you had forgotten about? Searching my wardrobe, I discovered this jacket which I haven’t worn very often but was perfect from a tonal point of view to capture this challenge. You can see from the close up it matches the colours in the painting perfectly. I left my outfit very plain to match the somber mood of the painting with no added ‘bling’ accessories except for my silver necklace which I thought would depict the liveliness of the dog.” She also sent both black and white photos as well as those in color.
I always look forward to Sally’s interpretations. She says, “I was inspired by the citrusy colors of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale catalog and the June Dollar Bead Box to put a fresh and summery spin on the achromatic Going to Market painting: a neutral white + grey base outfit jazzed up with orange, lemon yellow, and lime green in my cardigan, ballet flats, and DIY jewelry set.” Hey, wait! Sally, you got an actual catalog for the Nordstrom Anniversary sale? Wow!
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey and one of our curators almost always has the perfect brooch, and today is no different! She says, “I leaned into the black-and-white theme, and also played with the textures/patterns a bit (there are pleats on my top and stripes on my trousers, though they’re kind of hard to see). Finally, I topped it off with my snail brooch, not only because it’s black and white, but also because I think it has a pastoral feel that kind of matches the overall feel of the painting.”
Next is Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge. Here’s what she says, “I wore a long black cotton dress which reminds me of the style of dresses women wore in the 1860s. I added a long ivory kimono robe to mimic the flowiness of the woman’s dress as it drapes down over the donkey’s back. My black cowgirl boots seemed like the appropriate footwear if I were to ride a donkey to market wearing a long dress…at least I would have practical footwear. Finally, my white cloche hat is a nod to the woman’s bonnet.” Shelbee has also given us two versions of the same look. Oh, I can’t decide which I like best, can you?
Finally, here I am! Initially, I was going to edit all my photos into black and white. Then, I was going to end with one in all kinds of riotous colors. In the end, though, I went with a black and white look. I’m sharing the version in color as well as the black and white one. Of course, I had to include my dog, Jack!
And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!
I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sue, Sally, Salazar, and Shelbee for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!
Coming up…

I was wondering if you all would go black and white! I love Salazars brooche! Lovely to see all these different styles.
Thanks, Nancy! Actually, I was surprised Shelbee did black and white! And, Salazar has the best brooches!
I love seeing all the different styles and textures and colors that everyone picked!
Thanks, Joanne! I was so glad I went with this black and white painting so everyone could stretch their imaginations a bit.
These outfits are all so, so good! I love Sue’s blazer. What a fabulous print! And Sally’s colorful take is so pretty!
Shelbee
Wasn’t it cool to see Sally’s colorful outfit when the rest of us when the black and white route? I really liked everyone’s because they were unique and yet so that person!
Thanks, Shelbee!
How fun to see how each of you were inspired by the art – and wow, Sally and the Nordstrom catalog – how cool! I really like your black and white photos, actually I think so many photos look better that way!
xo,
Kellyann
Thanks, Kellyann! I do really like black and white photos. They seem to bring out details you miss otherwise. I know…I haven’t received a Nordstrom catalog in years. It seems like one of the last was when my daughter still lived in Virginia which would have been over 11 years ago. Lucky Sally! Isn’t it something how different each look is? I love it!
It’s always so eye-opening to see how everyone interprets this so differently.
I love them all!
Xoxo
Jodie
It really is when you think we’re all starting with the same image. I love how it’s made me really think about what would work and why.
Thanks, Jodie!
Everyone did so well with the black and white palette, even when that doesn’t feel as naturally the colors they gravitate toward – and I did enjoy my citrusy spin on the painting. I’m not sure why I get the Nordstrom catalog when others don’t? Maybe they know I make paper beads and need all the paper, haha 😀 I am a card holder, so maybe that factors in.
I was so thrilled with the way everyone approached this art so differently. I really loved that you went with those citrusy colors. Every time I get a Garnet Hill catalog, I think of you.
Thanks, Sally!
