Gallery of Style: “Katherine Parr!”

I think this is such a sumptuous painting, don’t you? The last of Henry VIII’s queens was Katherine Parr. Unfortunately, we don’t know who painted this portrait, but it’s beautiful. If you’d like to read more about the artist, the art, and my interpretation, you can find that here. I’m so happy to show you this week’s Gallery of Style and the bloggers who have interpreted Katherine Parr!

Gallery of style…

First, we have Sally from St. Paul! That’s how I always think of her. If she ever moves, I’ll have to change my way of thinking. Sally said, “I wasn’t feeling the color black for this challenge, but I was happy to combine white and maroon in summer-friendly fabrics for my outfit.  As soon as I saw her white collar, I knew I could use my collared shirt to mimic something specific from her clothing.  It was a happy coincidence that I’d just made a three-piece layered necklace in maroon/dark red/gold that, interspersed with three pearl necklaces (a mix of faux and real pearls), let me bring in some of the sumptuous bejeweled aspect of her look.  Faux pearl drop earrings and a bracelet stack with real pearls, garnet beads, gold metallics, and paper beads finished off the outfit.  I liked how this one turned out!” Sally is amazing when it comes to creating jewelry!  I think it’s pretty cool she’d just made this necklace!

Next is Salazar! She says, ” Since it’s the summer, I had to think a bit differently about my outfit, and in the end, I went with this black-and-red combo. My skirt is a nod to Catherine Parr’s red gown, and the ruffles on my top are a weather-appropriate reference to the intricate embroideries and other trimmings. And of course, I had to add a brooch to reflect her pearls and the feather in her headdress as well!” I told you, Salazar has always has a brooch or piece of jewelry that meets the brief!

Shelbee has this magical closet. She says, “It is still cool enough here to be wearing sweaters and boots and I wore this outfit for three days straight the week before you sent us the art. I had washed it all and the poncho was folded on top of a pile of clothing waiting to be put away. At the end of Monday’s art post, I wrote this…’May the closet magic work its magic!’ So then I walked into my closet room to brainstorm outfit ideas for this challenge and my eye immediately went to the folded up poncho sweater. Literally everything about it resembled Katherine’s dress from the color palette to the black vertical stripe going straight down the front. The closet magi really did work its magic! Since I had worn the outfit for three consecutive days, I decided to wear it exactly as I had before with black leggings, white cowgirl boots, a burgundy paisley scarf, a black straw boater hat, my horn necklace, and feather earrings. By sheer coincidence, much of it represented different details from the painting. The scarf for her collar, the beads on my necklace for her pearls, my feather earrings for the feather in her hat. The only thing I added specifically for this challenge are the stacks of beaded and pearl bracelets just because I wanted more pearls.”

Finally, here is my interpretation. I had thought to use an April Cornell duster, but I didn’t have anything that would work under it. Then, I thought of these pants. I added a lace top and this gorgeous tunic. I’m really pleased with this outfit because one of the things I’m trying to do is create outfits I’d actually wear.

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sally, Salazar, and Shelbee for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!

Coming up…

I hope you’ll come back next Monday to see the art work we’ll be styling and imitating! And, please visit all of the people who participated in this week’s challenge!

  1. Everyone did such a wonderful job with this one! I always love how vastly different all of the interpretations are.

    Shelbee

    • This was probably one that had the fewest colors to work with, but everyone did such an amazing job interpreting it!

  2. I love seeing the gallery all pulled together because you really can see that you are all pulling from the same inspiration piece and yet you all have your distinct style.

    • Thanks, Joanne! The collage really does show that, doesn’t it? I think the portrait was pretty limited in the colors that would work, too.

  3. It’s those colors that really pulled it all together.
    Fabulous

    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! I think the painting had so few colors in it that those were the only choices. But, I think everyone’s take was just enough different to be interesting!

  4. I love the collage photo as it is so matchy matchy and I love that! Lol. Great looks all!

  5. I loved seeing how everyone made this inspiration work for a warmer weather outfit…well except Shelbee, who is sadly always lagging where warm weather is concerned – but even Shelbee created something for cooler weather that still felt seasonally appropriate. I know my outfit for winter weather would have looked very different. Makes me think I may need to revisit this artwork in December for a winter take on it!

    • Thanks, Sally! I didn’t even think about the weather when I picked the painting. But, after Salazar mentioned it, I thought, “Oops!” I can’t wait to see what you do with it this winter!

  6. I think it would be so much fun to have you all stand around the art work and have your photo taken together! You’d really see how it all blends but each look is so unique! If wishes were fishes, right?
    Great job ladies!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! That would be amazing, wouldn’t it? We probably wouldn’t ever get a photo taken as we’d be so busy comparing our looks!
