I thought this was such an interesting representation of the Madonna. At first glance, you might assume it was fairly recent given those cherubim who faintly resemble gummy bears. But, the work is actually from somewhere between 1490 and 1500. If you want to read that post with all the info and more information about my look, you can find it here. And, my post about my graduation tour is coming sooner rather than later! This time we have five interpretations (Shelbee has two) as we welcome Sally back. So without further ado, here we go!

Gallery of style…
First up is Salazar! She says, ”I went with this pale blue floral shirt to reflect the blue sky, the red skirt to reflect the red robe, and navy flats to reflect the blue outer robe. I also accessorized with my cameo brooch because of its classical silhouette, and the gold frame is a nod to the frame of the painting too.”

Shelbee came up with two outfits. She says, “The first outfit consists of some recently thrifted pieces including the red floral dress and blue floral vest. The colors in both pieces reflect all of the wonderful colors in the artwork. I added a green ribbon to my hat for the green cherubs and wore the same gold shoes as the first outfit. My gold necklace features a tiny cross pendant to bring some religion into my outfit.”

“For the second outfit, I layered a blue, white, and lavender ruana over a red maxi dress to capture the colors and flow of Mary’s clothing. My belt and shoes are gold to represent all the gold trim on the wood panel. I wore a long ivory scarf that my mother, whose name was also Mary, made for me. My floral straw hat brings in the green and red of the cherubs in the background. And the yellow door is for the yellow cherubs.” This is the outfit that made the final cut!

We welcome Sally back to Style Imitating Art! She says, “went with a fairly literal interpretation of the artwork this time, inspired by the colors and layers of Mary’s outfit. (I’m sure she wasn’t wearing knee length shorts, but I bet she would have liked their practicality as the mom of a baby.) Mary’s dress looked both red and pink to me so I split the difference with a magenta T-shirt and topped it with a blue cardigan and white scarf (that I left long and flowing rather than in an elaborate style on my head). I finished up the look with a purchased silver necklace and some DIY jewelry that I made to coordinate with a navy/blue/pink cardigan in my wardrobe. This look is very high contrast for my coloring but I still enjoyed the drama of it. I feel that it’s rare for me to wear a fully color blocked outfit that doesn’t have any print pieces so I appreciate that this challenge spurred me to do that.”

Here is my look. I’m not 100% thrilled with it, but I think the silk Pixie skirt from Kantha Bae definitely hit the mark! I wore a coordinating tee and pulled it together with my lace shirt from April Cornell.

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!
I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sally, Salazar, and Shelbee for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!
Coming up…
I hope you’ll come back next Monday to see the art work we’ll be styling and imitating! And, please visit all of the people who participated in this week’s challenge!

Beautiful interpretations! Love how you all stayed in that colour palette! But all such different styles.
Thanks, Nancy! I think this was one of the rare times when we did all stick to the same palette. Usually, someone finds something to use as a different color. It was tough but fun!
This was such an interesting artwork and super fun to style. I was stumped at first with all the colors (because I like to include all the colors in my outfit), but it worked out for me in the end. I love everyone’s interpretations and I am so excited that Sally is back at it!
Shelbee
Thanks, Shelbee! I am really glad to see our Sally back! It really was a tough one, but they all seem to be until we find that one piece (or two) that starts us off. You are really good at including all the colors. I tried, but couldn’t do all of them…though maybe I should have done that with accessories!
Everyone looks so lovely!
Aren’t they stars at this? Thanks, Joanne!
I love the combination of pink-red tones with blue, and seeing how that played out for each participant was so interesting. I still feel like I could do an outfit inspired just by the “gummy” cherubim (that’s a great way to describe them)! Salazar’s brooch choice was genius – loved the connection to the frame of the painting, and Shelbee as always goes above and beyond with all the details to create some terrific boho vibes. Marsha, I still think your outfit looks great, even if you weren’t totally happy with it. Kantha Bae pieces are just so fabulous that it’s hard to go totally wrong with one.
Thanks, Sally! It really was fun to see how we all picked up on the pink/red and blue but ended up with completely different looks. Shhh…some of the docents actually call this paint that…the Gummy Bear Madonna! I never think about the frame so I need to try to remember that. Shelbee is amazing…her closet truly is magical. I appreciate the compliments. I need to figure out a better top half!
It’s always so fun and interesting to see the different variations.
Nothing like a painting to give you style ideas.

Jodie
That’s what I love so much about this challenge. Everybody sees something differently or finds something no one else noticed.
Thanks, Jodie!
Hi Marsha,
I laughed at the gummy bear statement! LOL . I think the mood and colors were captured by you all, and so fun to see the different ways. The colors and the dreaminess, well captured.
I hope you are having a great week,

Thanks, Jess! I love that gummy bear idea…I should probably have gone with that, right? It’s one of the things I really like about SIA…seeing how others interpret the art.
