I seem to have this penchant for picking Impressionist paintings. I have been trying really hard to find other kinds. Technically, this is a Post-Impressionist painting! I’ll try harder the next time; I promise! I hope you enjoy all the different interpretations in our Gallery of Style! If you’d like to read more about why I selected this piece of art, you can find that here. To read more about the art, the artist, and my outfit, you can find that here! But, you’ve come to see not me, but the others who have joined in on the styling for Toulouse-Lautrec’s “May Belfort,” right?
Gallery of style…
First up is my friend from St. Paul…Sally. I encourage you to visit Sally’s blog. She always has a little extra thrown in…make sure you read the entire post. You’ll see what I mean! Sally says, “When I saw this painting, I knew immediately that I’d pair my pink sweater with this leaf print skirt, a combination I’d had in mind for a couple years now but never actually wore. I like that the skirt contains the pink (in small amounts), brown, and teal from the painting all in one piece. Adding the scarf in a similar shade of pink rather than a contrasting color was 100% inspired by the painting, and I was pleased with how it worked out! Of course I added some me-made jewelry to finish off the look.”
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey and one of our curators has such unique jewelry. She usually uses a brooch or two. She says, “I went with the pink and green color scheme and added my cat brooch because May Belfort always performed with a black cat. Also, my clogs are to reflect the brown streaks of the stage in the painting. (I just realized the pink and green makes it look like I’m promoting “Wicked”, which I’m not!)”
Next is Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge. Here’s what she says, “The peachy color of May’s gown reminded me of this peachy floral kimono robe that I picked up on a late summer thrifting adventure. I never had the chance to wear it before the weather turned too cold so I was really excited to find a way to style this pretty robe for cooler weather. Using the greens and browns in the painting as inspiration for the rest of my outfit, I wore an olive green knit dress, tan suede boots, and my olive green floppy hat. I added a cameo brooch to my scarf hat band because it really resembles the painting in color and mood.”
Once I took a really long look at the painting, I knew there was only one way to go! I had to wear this Rhiannon kimono from Kantha Bae. I added another Kantha Bae top underneath with a Gudrun Sjödén pink slip. But, I think the stars were my boots with the feather details! I didn’t have any kind of headwear that even vaguely resembled May’s. But, I think she would have approved of my boots!
And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!
I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sally, Salazar, and Shelbee (I feel like I need to change my name to something starting with S) for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!
Coming up…
I hope you’ll come back next Monday to see the art work we’ll be styling and imitating! And, please visit all of the people who participated in this week’s challenge!

Hi Smarsha! (There…your name now begins with an S. Hahaha) I absolutely love how all of our outfits turned out! Each is so very different but all represent the painting so well. It’s my turn next!

You all did a great job – I love how Salazar styled her pieces and used the brooch!
