When Jodie mentioned this skirt in an email, I thought, “Why not try it?” Turns out, Mireille may have thought the same thing. So, today’s post is going to be a three-fer. I’ll provide links to both of their posts a little later. I’m always a sucker for a challenge in case you haven’t noticed!
I love a good sequin skirt. Oh, let’s be honest! I love a sequin just about everywhere! But, paillettes are another matter altogether. What’s a paillette, you ask? Well, they’re sequins on steroids, I’d say. They’re usually round (though I’ve seen oblongs) and usually larger than your everyday run of the mill sequin. Most of the time, they also have a hole at the top to attach them to something. I didn’t realize this particular skirt was covered with paillettes. Last year, I bought a sequined skirt from Old Navy and loved it. You can see it here. If you clicked on the link for today’s skirt, you’ll notice ON calls it a sequin skirt. Technically, paillettes are sequins. But, again, they’re really big sequins. I decided to style the skirt three different ways because I honestly love the color!
The first outfit…
In this outfit, I decided to wear a cardigan. This is a very old Signature Merino Wool cardigan from Garnet Hill. I am actually wearing it backward because more of the design shows up on the back. It has just a touch of that mint color of the skirt in it. I thought this would be my favorite of the three looks, but it isn’t for some reason. I think it may be the belt. I needed it to give some definition and create some kind of break between the sweater and the skirt. But, it is a raffia belt which may be what’s throwing it off. Maybe, if I had a wide brown leather belt that would have been better.

Now, I love this look! I think, though, it would look better with the tee tucked in. The only problem is the tee is cropped, and it just wouldn’t stay tucked in! I bought it earlier this year from J Crew because I love violets! This Convertible Collar Knit Jacket…oh, let’s talk about this jacket! It has just the smallest of mint lines running through it. As you can see, I wore it with the collar up as well as down. I actually like it best up!

OK, I wasn’t prepared to love this as much as I did. It definitely gives va-va-voom vibes, right? I paired the skirt with a simple white shirt. It’s an old one from J Jill. I tried to pop the collar, but the dang thing wouldn’t stay popped. I also tried that sleeve rolling technique Jenna Lyons had everyone doing back in the day. I just felt silly. I am more than happy just rolling the cuffs back a couple of times. I added the raffia belt, but this time it worked. I think it’s because the palette is light so you don’t notice it’s raffia.

The Lewk!

I loved my Adidas Sambas so much, I went looking for a suede pair. I couldn’t find any Sambas, but I did find these München Sneakers in the silver/off white/silver color. They are even more comfortable than my Sambas! The necklace is an old one from J Jill. The Adeline Vintage Earrings are new and from Kendra Scott. I bought them, using my birthday discount. I thought the necklace would show up more, but it really disappears, doesn’t it?

For the second outfit, I pulled out these Sofft booties. Ordinarily, I would wear tights with these booties, but I decided to be different and just wear them with no other socks. It’s not a look I usually like, but I think it’s a little more modern. The necklace is from the museum gift shop, and the earrings are old and from J Jill. I liked the neutral colors as the jacket draws most of the attention (as does the tee).

For the last outfit, I wanted to wear sandals as I wanted a bit dressier look. I pulled out my Willow sandals which are a dream to wear. The earrings are, you know what, I’m not sure where I got them! But, they are a good basic. You won’t believe what the necklace is! It’s strands of either guitar strings or piano. I really can’t remember, but they vibrate a little as you move them. They don’t, however, make any music!
What the others say…
I don’t honestly know what the others are saying because we are all publishing at the same time. You can find Mireille’s post here. Jodie’s post is here. I can’t wait to read them myself!
Wrap it up, Marsha!
I really love the color of this skirt, but I cannot get past the paillettes. They really make the skirt look cheap as well as creating other problems. One of those is they twist around each other so you have to be careful with them. Another problem is they jingle. Seriously, they jingle as you walk. There is no way you could sneak up on anyone wearing this skirt. Even the reviews on Old Navy are almost all negative. One person called it a “plastic skirt.” I assume that’s because the paillettes cover the entire skirt and are so shiny. I still wonder about sitting down while wearing it because I’m sure I’d bend several of them. Then there is the “slip.” It is a pain in the patootie to get it all smoothed down. Of course, I was doing three quick changes, but I still think it would be an issue if I kept it and wore it on the regular. In case you haven’t figured it out, I returned the skirt. So, can we talk? Did you know there was a different kind of sequin called a paillette? Where would you wear these outfits? Which is your favorite? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as quickly as I can.
Thank you!

I had the same issues with the skirt, so I did return it as you will read in my post. I found one that I loved at JCpenney and hope to get some pictures done today. I do love how you styled in in outfits 2 and 3 and I have many ideas for mine. I went back to your post from last year and yes, that skirt is awesome! I did not know the difference between paillettes and sequins, but that really makes sense!

Thanks, Mireille! It just wasn’t worth the money (even though it wasn’t that much) to me. I know I would never reach for it. I didn’t like the plastic-y feel of it at all. I’m glad you found one at JCP. Yes, last year’s skirt is so much better. If they’d used those sequins with this skirt, I might have kept it.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of this skirt (from how it looks on y’all) either, but I am just not a sequin person in general (too easily damaged/high maintenance). That said, the basic idea of the plaid blazer + graphic T + skirt outfit was brilliant, and I do like the T and blazer together. I’d wear a different style of skirt and add the sparkle and shine with jewelry.
Thanks, Sally! It just doesn’t quite work. I like sequins and have a sequin skirt, but I’m always very careful with what I wear with them. They are snaggy little dickens, aren’t thye? Oh, I’m glad you liked the blazer and tee combination as that’s my favorite, too! I liked the white blouse look, but I would be more prone to wearing the blazer and tee. I might have to do a Try it again Tuesday with that!
You really put together some great color combinations with the aqua skirt.
I don’t mind the bigger sequins, and it was funny because rob was like what’s that noise? What’s that noise?
Because they jingle a tune while you walk!!
Thanks for joining in.I always love it when we can.All show it different ways.Even if you returned it.
Xoxo
Jodie
Thanks, Jody! It was a lot of fun styling it different ways. I don’t think Mike noticed the jingling, but I sure did! I could have even gotten past that if it weren’t for the fear of those big paillettes eventually folding over and breaking. If it were regular size sequins, I think I would have kept it because the color is gorgeous!
I love that skirt Marsha, ming you I do like a bit of sparkle.
I thought the way you styled it was very interesting- I’m rubbish at styling things, usually go for the same old, same old.
But I don’t have a big wardrobe of clothes to fall back on.
I thought the third look was great. Stylish but not too much so – a great look for an evening out at a great restaurant..
Thanks, Linda! I love sparkle, too, but this was just too much plastic. It truly felt like a plastic skirt as one reviewer described it. I was glad to have tried it. I might need to look for a skirt in this color someday. I have really developed my styling approach since I started blogging. Before that, I would just buy an entire outfit as it was presented. I think almost everyone has liked the last look most of all.
It’s a pretty skirt and I love the colour! Looks beautiful with the white shirt!
❤️carmen
Thank you so much, Carmen! It is a beautiful color, but the rest of it was just not worth it. It seems the last look is the winner for most everyone!
I liked the last combo the best, you looked so fresh and minty!
Here in Germany we call them all “Pailletten”, no matter the size or where the hole is. I rarely had them on my clothes because they get so heavy and taking care of the clothing can get tough. I have used them in my bead embroidery jewelry, though, or to make Christmas ornaments, but always sew them on with an extra little bead for texture.
Thank you, Cat! I do find sequins here and there when I wear other things, but these were just huge! I didn’t really notice the weight of the skirt, but it was definitely a bit finicky with the underskirt. I was battling that all the time. Some reviewers said the skirt and tights did not play well together! I can see where they would be nice on beading.
I do like that last look a lot! But I did wonder the same thing about trying to sit in that skirt and thinking the paillettes would crinkle/bend for sure.
Thanks, Joanne! The last look seems to be the winner! But, I really think the paillettes will eventually crease and break. Some of the reviews said whole rows were missing on their skirts. I didn’t have that problem. I just knew I’d never wear it, and I am trying not to keep things like that anymore.
Ooo I learned a new word today! And this look is so fun! You have a knack for pairing different fabrics / textures / “vibes”.
Pairing the skirt with tennis shoes is perfect ! *chef’s kiss*
Thank you, Edi! Always be learning…that’s one of my many mottos! I do love to mix things up. Believe me, this has been a big evolution since my teaching days! Those sneaks are just the best. I wear them to the museum all the time and with everything!
What a beautiful skirt the colour is so lovely. I do adore sequins but haven’t got anything with it. I love the look with the white blouse!
Thank you, Nancy! It is a gorgeous color, but that’s all it had going for it as far as I was concerned. I announced my arrival long before you could see me! I will have to wear the white blouse with other skirts, I guess!
Shame about the issues with the skirt as it is such a pretty colour . I agree with others and pick look three as the winner. I quite like sequins but only have a couple of tops.
Thank you, Jill! It really is a pretty color, but the quality just wasn’t there at all. You definitely picked the winner!
I did not know there was a sequin called a paillette. I love the color of your skirt, but I completely get why you returned it. All three of these looks are fabulous! My favorites are 1 & 3!
Jill – Doused in Pink
Thanks, Jill! I’m not sure how I came across the word the first time, but I didn’t know they were considered sequins, too. Isn’t the color beautiful? I just know I wouldn’t wear it because of the paillettes and the lining. It seems number 3 is the winner!
My favorite way is with the sweater but maybe change out the sneaks? The combo is so unique and beautiful. I love that you tried different ways to style!
https://www.kathrineeldridge.com
Thank, Kathrine! I really liked the sweater, too, and I tried the sneakers because it seems like that’s what so many do. It does feel weird to me though I wear these with my long skirts at the museum all the time. It was fun coming up with completely different ways to style the skirt even though I didn’t keep it. I sure would have if it had been regular sequins because the color is gorgeous.
That is such a great skirt! The last outfit is my favorite! It’s so cute!
Thank you, Laura! I love the color, but those paillettes were just too much. You definitely picked the winner!
It was a lovely color! My fave is the white shirt with it. I find sequins and pailettes a bit uncomfortable in a skirt, when I sit down. I love sequins and used to have lots of items, now it’s just 1 top. Thanks for linking!
Thank you, Gail! It was a very beautiful color, but those paillettes just weren’t for me. My sequin skirt has very small sequins that don’t interfere with much of anything. Sometimes, they will catch on something, but it’s a pleasure to wear.
Hi, Marsha – I love sequins and paillettes, but especially sequins. I have lots of different kids of clothes with sequins, but only one with paillettes. I like to dress them down as well as up. The blazer and skirt are a surprise to look at because they are such opposite styles and colors, but it actually works! I would have paired the softness of the skirt’s color with paler and/or softer pieces, such as a beige tweed blazer. Thanks for presenting so many different outfit combinations. – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
Thanks, Angie! I really wish this has been a small sequin skirt instead of the paillettes because it just wasn’t gonna work for me. I really liked the blazer look, too. I had fun coming up with different ways to style the skirt even though it went back the very next day!
