Welcome to another edition of Style Imitating Art! If you’re new to the blog, or just need a refresher, Style Imitating Art is a really cool idea pairing fashion with art. Last year, I joined Shelbee and Salazar as curators for SIA. We begin with a piece of art, create looks based upon that art, and share them on our blogs. Think of it as fashion meets art museum! Anyone and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. You don’t have to be a blogger to participate, either! Salazar selected our inspiration artwork this week.
How it works…
Here are the details: Every other Monday, one of us will select a piece of art. That is shared via all three co-hosts’ blogs. On the following Monday, all three share their looks on their blogs. If you choose to participate, send a photo to the curator for that particular week. You, as well as the other participants, will be featured on the curator’s post that Wednesday. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! If you decide to play along this time, please send your photo to Salazar by Tuesday, August 12th at 10:00 pm EST to be included. I hope you will join us! I think this could be the best way to start something new! Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to be a part of this. You can snap a photo and send it in. We love to have readers join in on the fun, too.
Why…
Salazar finds the most unique pieces, and this one is no different, right? She says, “it’s a 17th-century Japanese helmet (known as kawari kabuto) in the shape of a dragonfly. I’ve always associated dragonflies with softness and fragility, so it’s really fun to see that motif in such a cool piece as this. Plus it’s very unique, and I think it would be fun to interpret.”

That is so cool!
Before they took the international Japanese TV channel away – I think I mentioned it before, but I’m still mad about it – I watched all kinds of documentaries, but never saw those helmets before or heard about them.
Can’t wait to see what you do with this one!

Thanks, Cat! I don’t know where Salazar finds the cool things she does, but she definitely stretches my imagination. I figured my look out today and hope it works like I want it to. I’m going to look at the museum tomorrow to see if we have anything like it.
That is a wonderful hat, almost witch like.
It is, isn’t it? I can’t wait to research the art as the artist is unknown. Thanks, Rosie!
Oh my goodness, that is some art work! Looking forward to see what you all made of it.
I figured mine out today! I hope you like it, Nancy!
This one is pretty out there! I am looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!
It really is, isn’t it? I think I have mine figured out, though!
Oh my gosh, I love that piece!!
Isn’t it cool? We shot the photos today. I think what I did works. You’ll have to let me know!
