Style Imitating Art: “On the Way!”

Style Imitating Art…

Welcome to Style Imitating Art which comes from SalazarShelbee, and me. You can think of this series as fashion meets art museum! SIA challenges people to find inspiration in different art works, create looks based upon that art work, and share them with the curator for that piece. Salazar is this week’s curator with this beautiful print. I hope you enjoy this post, the information, and my interpretation.

How it works…

Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration piece of art and posts the image on their blog. We then invite others to interpret that art work through their style. The following Monday, we share our outfits. The curator shares submissions the following Wednesday on her blog. Salazar chose this week’s art work for this round of Style Imitating Art. If you’d like, you can read why Salazar chose it here. Please send your photo to Salazar by Tuesday, July 30th by 10 pm EST. Style Imitating Art is an interesting way to inspire your outfits. You can see a few of my looks herehere, here, and here.

“On the Way” by Hao Ping

About the artist…

I tried to find out as much as I could about the artist. Wikipedia’s entry is for an official in the Chinese government. That is not this Hao Ping. Our Hao Ping was born in Yunnan, China, in 1952. He graduated from the Department of Fine Art of Yunnan Art College in 1980. He continued his studies at the Printmaking Department of the Central Fine Art College in 1986. Four years later, Hao Ping became a member of the evaluation committee of the National Youth Print grand exhibition. “In 1992, he became a jury member of an important print and painting exhibition committee.” Hao Ping is also a member of the Chinese Fine Artist Association and the Chinese Print Artist Association as well as other Chinese art associations. You can read more here about his exhibitions as well as museum collections containing his art.

A little more…

The Ronin Gallery in New York City says this:

Widely exhibited in China, Japan, Europe and the United States, Hao Ping is a visionary of contemporary Chinese art prints. Born in Yunnan Province in 1952, his prints consider the culture and experience of the ethnic minorities of Southeastern China. Through the use of bold color, geometric composition, and varying levels of abstraction, Hao Ping has a distinct style that reflects that of the Yunnan Art School (source).”

About the art work…

“On the Way” is a woodcut print which measures 20.1 inches x 19.7 inches (51 cm x 50 cm). It sold on January 17, 2010 for $200 plus commission and shipping. The print features a “young woman with long black hair and elegant face from the Eastern regions and a Yak animal next to her. The yak was domesticated in Tibet probably 3000 years ago. With its thick coat it is perfectly adopted to the harsh temperatures of the high plateaus of Central Asia (source).”

My interpretation…

I admit it. I cheated for this SIA. I am using photos from a post from this past February. But, every time I went into my closet, this dress practically screeched in my ear, “Hey, it’s me! I’m the one you want.” I thought, “OK, I’ll wear that dress, but there’s the woman’s skirt that’s yellow so I’ll add a yellow scarf.” The joke’s on me because I was wearing the exact yellow scarf I’d worn in February! Now, you have to admit…it’s the perfect interpretation for this challenge, right? This is the Polly dress from Gudrun Sjödén as is the scarf and slip. Why mess with perfection, right?

The Lewk!

I love these Leighton boots by Miz Mooz! Even when I don’t put my orthotics in them, they are comfortable…not walk all day comfortable but meander around the mall comfortable. Back in February, I was considering buying another pair. Well, I did because my brown Born boots are aging, and these were very close to that color! I am not one to wear a necklace under a scarf, but I’m trying to change that. Today, all of the jewelry is from different vendors and is years old. The necklace is from J Jill. I don’t even want to think how old the bracelet is (from Talbots), and the earrings were a gift from Nigel (a business trip to the Southwest). I’m not sure why, but I almost always think of turquoise as a summer gem. Of course, the only real turquoise are the chips in my earrings. I like the way the turquoise colored and wooden beads mimic the colors in my dress.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

When I was in college, we did printmaking, and I loved it. We used styrofoam meat trays as our woodblocks, though! I loved creating art that way and should probably try my hand at it again. My only problem with new hobbies is what to do with the end results! So, can we talk? Do you like the geometric feel of this print? How do you feel about yaks? Do you think I cheated? Or, is my look the exact right one for this challenge? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as quickly as I can.

Don’t forget…

If you want to be included in the Style Imitating Art round up, send Salazar your photo by 10:00 pm EST Tuesday, July 30th. Photos of everyone participating will appear on her blog on Wednesday, July 31st! I honestly think this is one of the best pieces of art we’ve shown. There are so many ways to approach the challenge…the colors, the lines, the images. You could have lots of fun creating a look! Come on, give it a try! I think you’ll love it!

  1. Good thing you cheated because this dress is perfect. The colors are absolutely right on, the dress looks like it was made by the artist! Nice job Marsha!

    • Thanks, Kellyann! Oh, that’s the ultimate compliment for my interpretation! I really did think I had a different outfit ready to go, but when I held up the photo of the print, I could tell it didn’t work at all. Luckily, I had this one!

  2. I absolutely agree that this is the perfect outfit for this challenge!

  3. Absolutely the right dress. The colors are stunning.

  8. Um, yes, this dress is absolutely perfect and there is no reason to mess with perfection! I can understand why you felt the need to cheat! Hahaha. It really is a gorgeous painting. The colors really speak to me. And the lines and colors on your dress really capture the essence of the painting. You already know how much I love the long layered slip under the long dress. It’s just all so, so good, my friend.

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I really thought I could go another direction. But, the colors weren’t right, and there weren’t any of the lines to work with. I really love these slips! They do bring a completely different look to the outfit.
