This month, Gail, of Is This Mutton, came up with the theme and the questions. I can’t wait to read her responses to her questions. Leslie, of Once Upon a Time, may be joining us, too! 10 on the 10th is Leslie’s idea so I’m glad to be a part of it! Remember, there is a link party, too, so don’t forget to link up!
So, sports…
As you read my answers, please don’t judge too harshly! I was very much a tom boy when I was younger. But, the opportunities for sports for a girl were few and far between in my little town. On top of that, my mom was very reluctant (as in refused) to drive me anywhere. The shame of this was there was a huge baseball park a mile or so down the road from our neighborhood. We often walked there to watch the boys play! And, I have no idea why those goofy 1s show up for my answers. On my side of the blog, they are bullet points!
- Were you good at sports at school?
- We didn’t really have sports for girls at my grade school with the exception of volleyball. My mom didn’t let me even try out because she didn’t want to have to take me to practices and games. I did, however, earn the Presidential Fitness Award when I was a freshman in high school. So, I wasn’t really good at sports, but I wasn’t bad either.
- What are your three favorite sports to watch on TV?
- Swimming – my kids all swam so I understand that sport!
- Baseball – This is another sport I understand! I remember watching Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run on April 8, 1974. I watched the game with my dad who passed away in July of that year.
- Ice skating – I adore figure skating! It’s amazing to me what these athletes can do with their bodies and on two thin little blades!
- Do you regularly watch any live sports?
- Unless RuPaul’s Drag Race counts, I do not!
- Does the Olympic medal ceremony make you emotional when your country wins a gold?
- Honestly, I get emotional when any country wins a gold medal.
- What sport or fitness activities do you enjoy now?
- I don’t really enjoy any fitness activities if I’m being completely honest. I like to walk, but my arthritic knee prevents me from going as fast as I like. I envy people without any orthopedic issues and are able to just run and jump at will.
- Did you ever have a sporting hero who was your pinup?
- Gosh, I am coming across as completely un-sporty, right? I didn’t have pinups of anyone, sports, fashion, or even music. Oh, I am boring, aren’t I?
- What’s the most memorable sporting occasion you can remember?
- Oh, this one is easy. It’s definitely the hockey game between the US and the USSR in 1980. Nigel and I watched it and screamed ourselves silly. I can still see us sitting in the family room of our very first home, cheering on the home team!
- Is anyone in your family outstanding at sport?
- I have two grandchildren who excel at different sports. My grandson began swimming last year and has made such amazing progress this season. He had divisional and state cuts. My youngest granddaughter is a fabulous golfer. Her coach says she’s a natural!
- Name three sports you try to avoid on TV.
- Professional football
- College football
- Golf (shhh)
- Who’s the sports personality you admire most in 2022
- Can I say Jinkx Monsoon? She won Drag Race All Winners All Stars. OK, if I have to stick with traditional sports, I’d have to say Serena Williams. She has made her talent into her brand and achieved so very much. I congratulate her on her recent decision to retire.

I admit it. I am not a sports person at all. I enjoy only a few sports…swimming, figure skating, and baseball…and Drag Race! We live just minutes from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500, and I’ve never been! I have no desire to go and watch cars waste gas just to zoom around a track. And, we are even closer to the Lucas Oil Raceway where they drag race (cars not queens)! So, can we talk? Are you an athletic person? Do you enjoy watching sports on TV or in person? Or, are you like me and enjoy other things? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond quickly!
Thank you!

This is a fun post, Marsha! We don’t participate in any sports whatsoever and I never did. Sporting activities were agony for me as a school kid as all the ‘popular’ girls were good at sports – me I was absolutely useless at sport. And don’t talk to me about PE (Physical Education) as it was useless exercises in a kind of drilled, militaristic way. But now we absolutely adore two sports, Formula 1 motor sports which we watch throughout the year. And we also adore the Tour De France cycling. It passed our house one time years ago and we had no idea that for about an hour before the actual race a whole carnival of cars and motor-cycles appear and it is one joyous carnival atmosphere. Then the race. Now actually it is better to watch on the TV as you keep up with it throughout the entire race. But there’s nothing like the physicality of the peloton passing you – your hair stands up on end – it is so exciting. So a few years back we drove up to Yorkshire for the Grand Depart. It’s also lovely to watch for the French scenery. I mourn the day when it ends three weeks later.
One glorious month (it’s July) three things happen on the same weekend: Formula 1 racing; the Tour de France and Wimbledon and while I don’t watch every match there’s nothing like the sound of the tennis balls going over the net that says – this is summer!
That was really nice to write this down as I hated sports as a youngster, but truly love some sports now. And I have great hopes that women’s football will be allowed in every school (because of that win England had in the women’s Euros) as this would be a great step forward for women generally – yay and three cheers and thanks for this post!
Oh, I detested PE when I was in high school. When I was in grade school, it was lots of team sports and fun things. We did calisthenics and such, but it wasn’t ever a competition. When I hit high school, some of the girls from other feeder schools had been involved in sports for years (my school only had volleyball because our principal didn’t believe in things for girls) and were truly hideous about others not being as good as they were. Funny you should mention yours being militaristic. When my kids were in junior high (I’m not sure what that would be in the UK…very early teen years), their PE teacher popped a video in the machine. They then had to follow along with whatever was going on on the screen. Talk about lazy teaching! My kids hated it!
How exciting, though, to have those bikes whiz past your house. I can see why you would love it! Well, if you ever make it to Indiana, I shall have to take you to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway!
I didn’t realize woman’s football (is that what we call soccer here) wasn’t in schools. Yes, let’s hope that fabulous win tips the deck!
Thanks so much for coming by, Penny!
Okay, this was a super fun post with really fun questions! I love that you shared about the US vs USSR hockey game! What a silly coincidence that I just wrote about it, too! I am going to hit my yoga mat right now (it’s 5:15 a,m.) before my kids wake up and then I am going to write my 10 on the 10th post. It should be live later this morning!
Shelbee
Thanks, Shelbee! It’s an amazing coincidence…of all the things we could have written about, right? Lordy, at 5:15, I’ve only been asleep for a few hours! I can’t wait to read your 10 on the 10th post!
Oh I didn’t think of figure skating! That is one sport I do enjoy watching but other than that I am not a sports fan at all. It’s funny you mention your mom not wanting to travel for your sports–my how times have changed! I am AMAZED at the travel parents take on nowadays for their kids sports. I think it’s insane! We have one family we know that’s flying to Colorado (we live in CT) for their kids soccer game.
I love figure skating…singles, pairs, doubles…I have to admit I don’t always know if they’d made their triples or not though! Oh, that traveling thing was going on when I was teaching! It was so expensive and time consuming! I cannot imagine flying to Colorado for a soccer game…I hope the kid is at least in high school!
Thanks, Joanne, for coming by!
I enjoyed reading this! You have swimmers in your family! Yay!! I was a swimmer, so was my grandfather. 🙂 Your grandkids sound very talented! That is awesome. 🙂
What a great tv sports memory to have, watching Hank Aaron make history, with your dad. 🙂
Thanks, Erin! Two of my three kids really liked swimming. My youngest was kinda forced into it because that’s what the older two were doing! That is really cool you were a swimmer as was your grandfather!
Oh, I remember sitting there cheering Hank Aaron on…those are the best kinds of memories!
I forgot about the Presidential Fitness Award. I could never run a mile fast enough to get it!
I was surprised when I got it! I only really remember having to do the chin-ups!
Thanks for coming by!
Great answers to the questions. I think sports is great if your very much into it. But not if it doesn’t appeal to you. I love walking every morning especially recovering from surgery. It’s such a great and healthy thing to do. This was a great post I enjoyed reading it. Have a great week.

Thanks, Heather! I do like walking, especially in the morning. I hope your recovery is going well. Have a fabulous rest of the week!
Thanks for coming by!
Interesting topic. Question 1 (and your response) has me thinking back and remembering that it was typically boys who were involved in sports when I was young. I’m so glad that nowadays it’s quite normal for girls to be involved in athletic activities.

Oh, yes! I’m actually surprised we even had a volleyball team for girls because our principal was quite “This is what we do, and we don’t change it.” I was pretty good at volleyball, but my mom just didn’t want to have to drive me back and forth. Ah, well! And, yes, it’s so good to see all of the opportunities for girls.
It’s quite an eye opener to see the changes in how girls and women perceive sport, from when we were young to the present day. As Penny said, most girls in the UK dreaded PE lessons and promptly dropped sport from their lives. I was one of them! But there’s a lot of variety in sport and a lot to choose from on TV, so it’s now accessible to everyone in some form.
Oh, I agree…PE classes were a nightmare! We had to wear these nasty uniforms, take a shower, and prove we’d taken a shower! We had to take two years of it, I think. It was fine if you were one of the “it” girls. I wasn’t one of them…no surprise there! Strangely enough, I loved to run when I was younger, but I lost that joy once I got into high school. I’m glad some things have changed for women.
Thanks for visiting!
So fun to read this Marsha. It’s no fun when our bodies hurt to try to keep up any fitness activities. But my good friend who is a PT, did say that the more you don’t do, the more your body can’t recover (or something like that). I thought it was interesting.

Thanks, Jodie! That is really true. I just know when to stop, but I also don’t walk as fast as I’m used to! Just putting off a knee replacement as long as possible.
I love ice skating too! I also remember vividly the hockey win in 1984. I need to watch RuPaul’s drag race!

Oh, I love RuPaul’s Drag Race! It’s changed quite a bit since the early days though. I am just enthralled by the ice skaters! I cannot believe they do the splits basically on skates!

The more I read through everyone’s post, I find myself thinking “oh, I used to do that.” Apparently, my memory is worse than I even admit (how could I forget how much I loved swimming as a kid), and maybe – just maybe – I’m a bit more sportsy than I give myself credit for. Nah, not really. But I have really enjoyed the link-up this month! Thanks –
You are very welcome, Jennifer! I loved to swim when I was a kid (nothing like racing though), but then my claustrophobia kicked in. I really disliked putting my head in the water. I think maybe we are so conditioned to think we are only sporty if we are professional level, don’t you think?
Thanks for coming by!
Everyone comes off sportier than I do, Marsha. The Presidential Fitness award shows that you were no slouch. It’s too bad your mom was reluctant to drive so that you could participate in sports. (On the other hand, as a person who is not fond of leaving the house, I kind of get it. LOL!) I enjoyed learning more about you!

Yeah, she was tired by the end of the day as she had started working outside the home when I was in fourth grade. I was very sporty when I was a young kid. We had that big yard and were always playing soccer, kickball, badminton. I don’t know why I stopped to tell you the truth! I think that’s one of the benefits of these 10 on the 10th things…we get to learn so much about each other!
Kudos to you for winning the Presidential Fitness Award! I have never been a sports fan, and I didn’t participate in sports teams in school. Your sports idols Jinkx and Roxxxy look fabulous!
Thanks for hosting the link-up! (although the posts I added are not about sports — sorry).

Thanks, Carol! I didn’t even know we were doing this fitness thing so I was surprised when I won one! Aren’t those two queens wonderful? It’s amazing how much work they put into their art! Ah, don’t worry about the linkup…it’s for everyone!!
That photo of you with the drag queens is awesome! I don’t watch live sports either. I love watching my kids though!
Oh, I love watching swim meets! There’s that whole swimming for yourself and for your team at the same time! I loved meeting both of these queens…especially Jinkx!
Thanks, Laura!
