10 on the 10th: August Preview!

10 on the 10th…

Would you believe two of my three grands went back to school this week? The youngest will begin next week! I know, I know! You’re all going to think, “Well, when I went to school, I had to walk uphill both ways through three feet of snow!” But, actually, when I went to school, we began the Friday before Labor Day weekend. We only went for half a day (afternoons, I think), got the paperwork our parents would need to complete, received our textbooks, and probably got the “rules.” We also got out of school before Memorial Day. For those of you not in the US, Labor Day is the first Monday in September, and Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. So, even though summer has come to an end for school kids in Central Indiana, there is still plenty of summer left! This month’s 10 on the 10th is in a yin/yang question/answer format. I do hope you’ll play along. Hopefully, you’ll feel free to tell us lots about your answers! And, there’s a link party.

  1. I can already tell these are going to be some tricky ones to answer! Thank you.

  2. Another set of fun questions, my friend! I look forward to sharing my answers. We still have a full 5 weeks of summer vacation left. My kids don’t go back until September 7. But then they are in school until the last week of June. I think our schedule is so different because of the winter weather. I have seen snow in June here so summer doesn’t really start here until we are well into July. And then the snow begins again by October. In fact, the only two months that I have not seen snow in the North Country are July and August, so I guess those are the best months for summer vacation!

    • Thanks, Shelbee! Wow! That’s a late start compared to our poor kids! But, it definitely makes sense given your weather. I’m not sure how I’m even going to answer some of these! I’d better get started!!

  3. 1. My favorite summer vacation to date is the trip to Ireland we took in June. We did a fantastic Insight Tour called Country Roads of Ireland. It was fantastic. I can’t really think of a bad summer vacation.
    2. Wow. That’s a hard one. I know we used to go to the pool in Hunting Park and play till we were tired or hungry for the packed lunches we took with us. We would then dress and go out in the park, eat lunch, play on the Carousel that didn’t run on weekdays, and then climb trees and play on playground equipment, including swinging so high the swing had the “jumps, whence we would jump out of the swing. It’s amazing we are any of us alive.
    3. A swim suit unless we were on a vacation in a warm place, I guess.
    4. Ice water is my go to drink. Can’t stand sweet or iced tea.
    5. I read a lot. It was my go to “me” time. Still is. I don’t care for video games or TikTok.
    6. Summer movie: Independence Day. We watch it every year around the fourth. A summer movie I don’t like. Not sure. Can’t bring one to mind. I guess if I don’t like it, I just forget about it. However, if The Birds was set in summer, it would be the one I would hate. After being attacked by a rooster as a toddler, watching The Birds cemented my lifelong fear of birds. I used to cross the street if I saw a bunch of birds on a telephone wire. And you won’t believe this! I did a falconry experience on our Ireland trip. We had falcons and owls land on our “gloved” hands. And I did it!
    7. Summer in the City. I grew up in Philly!
    8. I am neither a bikini person, nor just a one piece suit person. I tend to like tanking tops and a bottom. Easier for visits to the bathroom.
    9. I love coleslaw and macaroni salads in the summer. Not fond of potato salad, although I doubt I would vomit if I ate it. I don’t make it well and if one asks what to bring as a dish, that is what I tell them to bring as my hubby loves it.
    10. I love summer flowers and the smell of the seashore. The sea smell always makes me feel good. Garbage makes me want to vomit.

Sorry I am so long winded.

    • Oh, Eileen! I think we must be very near the same age! I didn’t grow up in a big city, but I did lots of these same things when I was a kid, including drinking water from a garden hose! So, yes! I guess it’s a wonder we made it this far. Your trip to Ireland sounds wonderful. Does iced tea make your teeth feel funny? It does to mine. And, yes! The Birds was such a scary movie. I haven’t seen it in years so I wonder if it holds up to the test of time. I would think so because so much of Hitchcock’s work was psychological, right? Yay for you holding a falcon. That must have been a truly memorable experience. And, now I am singing Summer in the City in my head! I loved that song. The smells at the seashore are definitely good ones! And, you are not long winded at all. I really enjoyed reading your answers. It’s nice to learn more about you!
