10 on the 10th: January!

Happy New Year to all of you! My Norwegian boyfriends were talking about how long one should say that the other day. They decided up until Epiphany. I realize we’re a few days away, but it seems appropriate given the topic today! I remember calculating how old I would be when 2000 would arrive. I also remember thinking it was ages away! And, now, here we are…23 years later! When I was teaching, the school corporation was big into town hall meetings. That’s a school-y way of saying sitting around and talking! It was also a way to build community. When I think about it now, I think it was one of the best times I spent teaching. The kids got to know me, and I got to know them during these meetings. Sometimes, we would play “Would You Rather.” I had a stack of cards with some of the grossest options. Needless to say, they loved it! So, I decided to change 10 on the 10th just a bit and add in the option of “Would you rather…”

And, we’re off!

Would you rather make resolutions, select a word of the year, or make bucket lists?

I don’t like to make resolutions, and I think a word of the year would fence me in too much.  If I had to choose from the three (who makes up these questions anyway), I would have to go for the making bucket lists.  Joanne makes them throughout the year.  I can’t remember if it’s monthly or seasonally.  Those seem like smart things to me.  Again, will I do it?  Nah, probably not!

Would you rather make memories on vacations or save or save for a big occasion (retirement, wedding, college, etc.)?

Well, at this stage of the game, I have already paid for one wedding, sent three kids to private colleges (and paid their student loans off), and retired!  So, this one is easy!  I’d love to be making memories on vacations.  Covid, the bastid, sort of put paid to that, didn’t it?  We haven’t been on a long vacation for quite a bit.  We did go to Hilton Head a couple of years ago.  I cannot wait to get back to the UK.  I’d love to buy a Eurail pass and travel through Europe via the train.  I guess that’s a bucket list item!

Would you rather buy all the things on sale or shop your closet?

As much as I know I should say I’ll shop my closet, the truth is I’ve already been shopping!  I couldn’t pass up the April Cornell Boxing Day sale (though I only bought two items of clothing), and I might have purchased some things from Kantha Bae!  Those nighttime meds…I blame them!

Would you rather shed weight through fad dieting and do it quickly or eat differently and lose slowly?

Again, who is writing these goofy things?  Of course, I’d like to lose the weight as quickly as possible via any means possible.  But, in reality, I know, for myself, it works best if I change to eating small portions and lose weight slowly and steadily.  It’s when I gain a tenth of a pound or plateau, that I despair.  I need to keep the focus on the long term goal.

Would you rather undergo some type of facial treatment or update a room in your home?

Hmmm…this is a tricky one!  I doubt I would ever have a facelift.  I’m just not into pain!  And, the stretched looks of some of those celebrities who can afford the best makes me think it wouldn’t be worth it.  But, monthly facials, a laser treatment or two, good skincare…those things don’t break the bank.  So, I don’t even have to make a choice here.  Nigel and I do our own updating.  He may not enjoy it (but I think he feels compelled to complain), but I love the planning and executing of new things!  And, with this house, we literally have a blank slate!  Anyone for Antique White walls?  What was I thinking?

Would you rather watch Paul Hollywood or RuPaul?

This is the easiest question here!  I would watch RuPaul any day of the week over Paul Hollywood.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Great British Baking Show.  It’s on at our house almost all the time.  Nigel thinks it’s a good show to keep Jack from barking at the television!  But, I love the art of drag.  There’s something so fun about seeing these artists transform themselves into completely different people.  I have watched Drag Race from the beginning.  I miss the old days, I must say.  I remember when the queens had to make their own costumes.  Now, they employ designers and pay out lots of money for costumes that truly are works of art.  So, I guess my answer is not necessarily RuPaul I watch.  It’s the queens on her show.

Would you rather have to wear the same color all year long or not wear that color at all?

Well, now, this is certainly open to interpretation, isn’t it?  So, if I say red, does that mean burgundy is out?  If I say purple, is lavender gone?  I’m going to go with the one color, meaning if I say red, I mean red and not one of its cousins.  I would definitely give up one color for an entire year as long as I got to pick the color!

Would you rather wear a designer look or a designer knockoff?

Oh, with this question, I’m assuming I’m gifted the designer look!  I know, I know…never assume anything because…well, you know the tired old gag for that!  But, if I were on the receiving end of a designer look, why in the world would I turn it down?  Again, I would assume the designer would make sure the garment(s) fit me correctly and looked good.  I mean, what designer would want someone out and about in their clothing if the person looked terrible!

Would you rather be overdressed or underdressed at an occasion?

OK, this is another tricky one.  I think I would probably prefer to be overdressed at an occasion.  In fact, I have definitely been overdressed at weddings in the past.  Now, I have to be honest and admit I have never been invited to a wedding where it was black tie so I haven’t ever had to buy a gown.  And, if you’re overdressed,  sometimes, you can remove an accessory or two and be a little more casual.  It’s all in the confidence you exude.  Are you comfortable in the clothing?  It shows!

Would you rather have only neutral clothing or extremely colorful clothing?

This is fairly easy.  I’d go with a neutral wardrobe because you can always jazz it up with accessories.  I have a huge collection of scarves so color would never be lacking in my outfit.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

As always, I wrote these without any thought to how I would answer them! Some of them should have been a little more precise, right? So, can we talk? Do you like this new way of doing 10 on the 10th? I’m still going to use the other two formats. What other “Would you rathers” would you have used for the first of the year? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond as soon as possible. I am trying to figure out why you’re not receiving emails when I respond to your comment. Please know that I do. 1. Such a fun read! I was wondering the other day how long it’s okay to say Happy New Year! Thanks for the answer, ha!!
I don’t even know who Paul Hollywood is – I guess I need to get with the program!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! My son was just telling us the other day that someone looked at him questioningly when he wished them a Happy New Year on January 2! Oh, yes, you need to look up Paul Hollywood!

  2. Yep, I write up seasonal bucket lists and have ever since I began homeschooling my boys; it was more of a wishlist to make sure we added in lots of fun and day trips each season and not just focused solely on schoolwork and it just sort of carried over into my regular life too. I enjoyed this new format a lot!

  3. I love all these questions! I don’t look at a word of the year as boxing you in. I look at it as putting something out there that you want to stay connected to in the year. Mine is patience. Lol! I would also never turn a designer down and yes to be being overdressed!

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I will maybe rethink the WOY for next year. I’m just so averse to schedules and rules! Love your answers!

  4. Oh these are fun questions, Marsha! My kids are always asking me the strangest “would you rather” questions that I can rarely ever answer (things like, “Would you rather keep me or my brother if you could only keep one of us?” Hahaha.) At least, I stand a chance answering your “would you rather” questions! I was a little confused about some of them, so I read your answers before I even start writing my own (I don’t usually do that). But now I am getting to the writing part! Will link up as soon as I have it finished.

    • Thanks, Shelbee! My cards I used with my kids were so gross! We loved them and laughed so much! I knew in my head, as I was writing them, what I meant. But, when I answered them, I realized some clarity was definitely needed!

  5. Fun stuff, Marsha! I’d say mix it up for 10 on the 10th. The “would you rather…,?” is a lot of fun. I can see how your students would love it. I bet you were an amazing teacher. It would be ever so helpful to me, if you could get the questions out a bit earlier.

    • Thanks, Michelle! I loved teaching so much! I can’t wait to read your answers…still not getting any emails from the fashion or photography blogs. I will try to get my act in order and post them earlier!

  7. YOU, my friend, make me LAUGH!! These questions were so much fun. I first came across Joanne’s response to this month’s 10 on the 10th, and thought about how I would answer things. You are right…all the stars look ridiculous with their face lifts and botox and THEY can afford the best!! I would no doubt come out of a face lift or treatment looking like THE JOKER. So, no thanks.
My daughter was told to lose weight fast for her health issues. The doctor prescribed abdominal injections that she gives herself for weight loss. Had never heard of such a thing and was horrified when she told me. Apparently, this is the latest and greatest thing. There are 2 versions…one that is a medical necessity and one that anyone can do. I am glad she has been able to lose weight but worry it will be right back on. Love me some Weight Watchers!! It is a sustainable program for LIFE.
Have admired your pretty things from Kantha Bae. Daenel has some pretties, too.

    • Ah, thanks, my friend! My hairstylist is doing something with injections once a week and has lost more than 20 pounds. She lost me at injections!! I wonder if it’s the same thing as it’s really sweeping through town! I hope your daughter is ok and losing the weight her doctor wants her to lose.

Oh, some of these stars…I often wonder if they look at photos and think, “There! Right there is where I should have stopped.” I doubt it.

  9. Kantha Bae looks like it is has some really cool pieces!! I will have to look at them more closely. I hope you are enjoying the things that you bought!

Hmm maybe I would like Antique White walls? I have been slowly painting all my rooms Swiss Coffee. Lol. But that is not quite white, it is sort of creamier I guess? Like swiss coffee supposedly. Lol.

This was a fun one! I enjoyed the format!!

    • I do really like the pieces I’ve bought. I’ve kinda discovered the actual kantha pieces are not my cup of tea. And, the colors on the monitor are fairly different so it’s a bit of a crap shoot! But, I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve gotten!

Well, Antique White is a little more yellow than I expected in this house. We had it in our last house, but it was always paired with a different color, usually Alabaster which, apparently, is the same as Swiss Coffee! I do wish we’d gone with that color. We had the whole house painted one color due to costs. I’m trying to figure out colors for each room because I’m not a one color throughout the house kinda person!

I’m glad you liked this format, Erin!

  10. Definitely fun to read but boy some of those questions are hard.
I didn’t even know who Paul Hollywood was, haha.
Even though I love color, I also crave variety, so only wearing or not being able to wear a color would be a nightmare for me.
    XOXO

    • Thanks, Jodie! I wondered about your response to that question! I imagined it would be quite visceral for you!

  11. Some of these questions really got me thinking! Although I would the designer vs knockoff was easy! Designer for sure! Haha! It was fun to read your answers to these!

  12. I used to participate in a 10 on the 10th a while back, so hopefully I can remember to keep up as I try to pull myself back into blogging. I miss it. Nice to meet you 🙂

    • Welcome back to 10 on the 10th! I will have to pop over to your blog! It’s wonderful to meet new friends!

  13. Such a fun subject, Marsha! I was quite surprised that you chose neutrals over colours because you always wear colour so well! But I understand about jazzing it up with accessories!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Thanks, Suzy! Well, if I had to do it for a year, I think I would be more comfortable (is that a bad thing these days) in neutrals over really colorful clothing!

  14. Thanks for answering these and I wish you a happy year!
