10 on the 10th: December!

Ok, let’s get the weather report out of the way. Friday and Saturday, we had highs in the high 50s (~14C). It’s almost like when you’re emerging from winter. In fact, I spotted some of my hyacinths peeping out of the mulch! I think it’s supposed to cool off this week, but I’m not holding my breath for a white Christmas. I don’t think we’ve had one of those since we moved here in 2015.

How’s your holiday shopping going? Mine is going well, but I have several to finish up. And, it seems like I always leave the stockings til the last minute. We always do a traditional Thanksgiving meal, but Christmas has been a bit of a non-traditional thing the last few years. I haven’t made any Christmas cookies yet. I’m sure I’ll be cranking those out soon. As some of you may remember (the bunny cake shown here), decorating is not my strong suit! They taste good, but they aren’t the prettiest in the bunch! Anyway, I do hope you’ll play along with this month’s 10 on the 10th! Please either link up your post (and any others you’d like), comment, or email me your answers.

Without further ado…

Would you rather give up Christmas trees or Christmas cookies? I think this may surprise many of you, but I’d give up Christmas cookies. I can bake cookies, Christmas or otherwise, any time of the year, but I only put up Christmas trees one time a year. So, I’ll give up the cookies for the trees.

Would you rather get one amazing holiday gift or 10 just OK holiday gifts? It has been established that I’m shallow and superficial so my answer may, once again, surprise you. I’d rather receive one perfect and amazing gift than ten or even 20 just ok gifts. I wonder how my people feel when they unwrap their gifts. I do remember, when my kids were little, they would count to make sure each had received the same number of gifts! Gift giving is a bit of a gamble, isn’t it?

Would you rather wash your hair with Christmas cookie icing or cranberry salad? Hmmm…I do remember seeing many people being confused about what cranberry salad even was. In my family, we have had a couple different kinds of cranberry salad. The first, my favorite, consisted of diced fresh cranberries, chopped nuts, crushed pineapple, marshmallows, and Cool Whip. The second was the first two (or maybe three) ingredients in a red (cherry, strawberry?) Jello salad. My mom discovered that one year and that became her go-to cranberry salad recipe. I despised it because the other was just so good. But, back to the question…I would definitely go with the cranberry salad because I think it would leave such a nice smell. I think I’d have to do quite a bit of cleaning out of the drain, though!

Would you rather surprise your people with gifts or shop from their lists? Most of the time, I try to do both. But, as my grands have gotten older, their tastes change with the wind it seems. And, the older kids (you know, the non-grands) just buy what they want as they want it so they’re tough. Nigel? That man is impossible…he really doesn’t like to get gifts of any kind. I always tell the kids the good things, and I’m left with buying him the other things! I guess, in this roundabout way, I’m saying I shop, mainly, from their lists.

Would you rather eat only the desserts or the main course for your entire holiday season (however long that may be)? Oh, this is a tough one. First, I have to decide what my entire holiday season is. I’m going to call it just Christmas Day. My first inclination is to say the desserts because I have a humongous sweet tooth. But, I also know how sick that would make me for days after so I’m going to say the main course. And, since it’s just one day (for me), that’s not too long to eat just the main course.

Would you rather watch “A Christmas Story” or “Elf” for the entire day of your holiday? I have never seen “A Christmas Story,” and “Elf” is fun. But, do I want to watch them for the entire day? Not really. But, I’ll go with “Elf” because I know what to expect, and I’ll just turn the tv off! Nobody said I couldn’t do that!

Would you rather listen to “All I Want for Christmas” or “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” for an entire week? Another tough one because, honestly, I don’t know that there’s any song I’d want to listen to for an entire week! But, given the two, I think I’d go for hippos! I can always tune it out and watch “Elf!”

Would you rather have a “Ho, Ho, Ho” Santa laugh or an evil Grinch cackle? This one is easy! I’m a cackler all the way! I’ve always had a soft spot for the Grinch anyway. There are rumors of a Grinch sequel. I wonder what they’d do with it. The second Grinch movie, starring Jim Carey, did a nice job of explaining the Grinch’s demeanor. So, would a sequel show him happily ensconced with his sweetie and living the good life? Sometimes, you just need to know when to leave things alone, right?

Would you rather wear red and green or silver and gold for the entire holiday season? I think I would go with red and green because you could choose variations on each color. You could do maroon and forest green, rust and olive, olive and maroon, rust and teal. There so many more possibilities than just silver and gold.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

Do you ever feel a bit like Cindy Lou Who? I know Christmas can be an emotionally draining time. We lost my uncle at Christmas time decades ago, and I always wondered if he realized the timing of his actions. I think Christmas is one of those times when you have to decide for yourself its meaning. For some, it’s just another day. For others, it’s a recognition of the promises God made to His people eons ago. And, for some, it’s a bit of both. I understand, as a Christian, I’m supposed to be more of the latter and much less of the former. I, however, love the entire season and my chances to give my people gifts. I also love all the glitz and glitter that goes with it. So, can we talk? Do you celebrate Christmas or a different holiday? What family traditions do you follow without fail? And, have you learned what cranberry salad is now? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as I can.

  1. Wait, you sent me verbiage asking about washing my hair with pumpkin innards. Cranberry salad MIGHT not be so bad! And yes, I have experienced the Cool Whip Midwestern salad. Maybe not cranberry. It was June.
I have a delicious holiday tradition inherited from my Mom and Dad: popovers on Christmas morning! Served with ALL the jams in the fridge. (This is how I cull the old, tired preserves). Mmmmmm. Can’t wait. https://gluttonamb.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-tradition-popovers-for.html

    • Hahaha!!!! As I was answering this, I realized I had almost the same question for October! But, I do like cranberries in just about any form. I wonder if you had the pistachio pudding Cool Whip salad. Are you from the Midwest, Anne?

I will have to investigate these popovers. I’ve never made any, but as long as I don’t have to decorate them, it might be a good thing!

      Thanks, Anne!

  2. My mother in law make a similar salad with the cool whip and marshmallows and fruit in the summer… but I have never tried it since I really do not like marshmallows (and I think it might have some sort of Jell-O in it too and I don’t eat Jell-O either) but at least I now have a visual for cranberry salad so thank you. I be it would smell delicious but would definitely make a mess of the shower. I think a Grinch sequel would be rather odd… I mean I thought his heart grew 3 sizes; so would it have shrunk again? Or would he just be happy and celebrating?; seems like that would make for a boring movie, wouldn’t it?

    • That’s what I thought about the Grinch movie! What could they do with it? At this point, I guess it’s just a rumor. I’m not a big fan of marshmallows, either, but if they’re the little ones, I can kind of push them out of the way. And, Jello is just no!

      Thanks, Joanne, for coming by!

  3. The questions really crack me up.
I’d be terrible at them because I like variety, LOL

  4. The hippopotamus one was funny lol. I was like is that even a song or is it one the kids made up because they are always remixing a song their way.

    • Oh, I hope you tried to find it! It’s an actual song. I’ll bet your kids know it. I’ll pop over to yours in a minute!

      Thanks, Kita!

  8. Oh I didn’t even think about the aspect of choosing different shades of red and green to wear. Good idea! We did have quite a few similar answers – except for the hippopotamus song, which I hate! LOL Happy Holidays!

    • Thanks, Kym! I don’t really like that song, but the other one just gets on my nerves after hearing it on repeat so often.

  9. Love these fun Christmas questions! I would go toward desserts as well but I would also feel sick soon after and regret it. Lol!

  10. Hi Marsha! I just realized that I never commented on this post! Have you really never watched “A Christmas Story”?! I think you need to add that to a holiday bucket list! It is such a classic. I think you would really enjoy it! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas, my friend, and a happy and healthy new year!

    Shelbee

    • Hahaha! Nope, I’ve never watched it. I’m not a Christmas movie kinda person…I don’t like parades either! I hope you’ve had an absolutely wonderful holiday, my friend!
