10 on the 10th: March!

I know many of you long time followers will gasp at this one, but I’m ready for winter to leave Indiana. I love winter, don’t get me wrong. But, it’s kinda worn out its welcome with all the cold temperatures. I loved the snow, but that cold was bitter. This was another one of those I can easily come up with the first seven or eight, but then I had to really struggle to finish out the ten! As I’m still dealing with storage, I haven’t included many photos unless they were ones I already had. Sorry for the boring part of that. As you read this, we will probably be at the surgery center. Nigel’s revision is today, March 1oth. There’s a very real part of me that is worried, but there is a bigger real part of me that is very, very hopeful. I am grateful for all the words of encouragement and hope from you!

  • Petrichor…the smell of a first rain.  I do love a rainy day, and the smell adds to that love.  There’s just something about that luscious smell that makes you think of a freshly washed planet.
  • Planning my outdoor space – We have always had a back deck or patio, in every single house we’ve lived in.  Some of them have just been flat cement spaces.  Our house up north had the best back deck.  It ran the length of the house, was covered and was cedar.  I loved sitting out on it and watching the dogs, the birds, the storms, you name it.  Now, we have a small covered patio.  So, I have to do some planning with the little space we have.  Another thing to consider is when to buy new patio furniture.  Right now, we have faux wicker pieces.  We have two chairs, a settee, a rocker, and a couple of tables.  We’ve had them for six years, and they’re starting to show wear.  The plastic is becoming brittle and breaking.  So, I’m hoping to get one last year out of them.  I love to move the various pieces around to different places each year.  I also want to buy some new cushions.  I like what we’ve got, but new is always a different direction.
  • Gardening – I don’t have a lot of space in which to plant things.  Technically, I can only plan within three feet of the house, but I have a couple of spaces that go a little beyond that.  We also have the hump.  Two years ago, I planted some perennials on the hump.  A couple came up; most did not.  I’m hoping maybe they were just resting and will burst forth with brilliant colors.
    • The sandhill cranes returning north. I just love the song of the sandhill cranes.  One year, a huge flock flew over our home.  They were undulating just like schools of fish do.  I have already heard some this year, but they were a small sedge which is what you call a group of sandhill cranes.
    • Ah, the sounds of mourning doves calling out.  I don’t really know if they’re mourning doves or morning doves, but I love the sound of their mournful call.
    • Later sunsets – as y’all know I’m not a morning person so it’s unusual for me to see the sunrise, but I love a good sunset.
    • Thunderstorms – I know this one sounds weird because thunderstorms in Indiana can frequently turn dangerous.  And, since we don’t have a basement, that’s a big concern for me.  We have a crawl space which is where we’re supposed to go should the weather turn dangerous.  I could get down there, and I might could get Nigel down there.  But, two problems arise from this.  I have absolutely no idea how I would get the cover back over the entrance, and I would need lots of help getting Nigel up from there.  I think, given the changing environment, I may have one of my boys build some steps so he could go up and down more easily.  It would still be difficult, but it would be easier.
    • Open windows!  Why did it take me so long to think of this one?  I love to have the windows open and fresh air blowing through.  At our last house, I rarely opened the windows because they were building a huge neighborhood near us.  There was always dirt in the air.
    • Pedicures – I don’t get pedicures in the winter.  I mean, Nigel and I are the only ones who see my toes.  Most of the time, they’re covered with thick woolly socks.  But, I love to experiment with fun colors.  For some reason, my toenails are fine with being polished. My fingernails will split and peel like no body’s business!
    • And, it’s even stranger that this is the last thing to spring to mind.  Floral prints!!!  Yes, like floral prints in spring are so thought provoking and new!  But, I do like the floral prints of spring quite a bit.  The fabrics are lighter, airy, and feminine.

    Wrap it up, Marsha!

Again, this wasn’t quite as easy as I had thought it would be. One day, I’ll get this gig figured out…get the prompt out early, make it fun but a teensy bit challenging, and make it something I can easily do! So, can we talk? Have you ever heard of petrichor? What is your favorite bird song? Are you a floral person in way, shape, or form? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

    1. Thank you Marsha, I love seeing your little patio area. It looks very inviting.

    2. Oh there is so much I love about the first spring signs. And I can’t wait to get out our lounge set and decorate the area where we sit most summer evenings. Your outdoor space looks very cozy!

    3. I’ll just take birdsong because I can’t tell one from another. It was one of my favorites when I went to the train in the morning (around 5, that’s one reason I hated daylight saving because just when it wasn’t as dark any more in the morning, we jumped forward and it was dark again).
I’m no floral person when it comes to my own clothes and I admire real flowers, but keep my hands off them for good reasons.
Well, and you already know I like petrichor 😀
