Style Imitating Art!

The Leader of the Luddites

Style Imitating Art…

It’s time for another round of Style Imitating Art! A few years ago, I joined Shelbee and Salazar as curators for SIA. We begin with a piece of art, create looks based upon that art, and share them on our blogs. Think of it as fashion meets art museum! Anyone and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. You don’t have to be a blogger to participate, either! Shelbee selected our inspiration artwork this week.

How it works…

Here are the details: Every other Monday, one of us will select a piece of art. That is shared via all three co-hosts’ blogs. On the following Monday, all three share their looks on their blogs. If you choose to participate, send a photo to the curator for that particular week. You, as well as the other participants, will be featured on the curator’s post that Wednesday. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! If you decide to play along this time, please send your photo to Shelbee by Tuesday, July 14th at 10:00 pm EST to be included. I hope you will join us! I think this could be the best way to start something new! Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to be a part of this. You can snap a photo and send it in. We love to have readers join in on the fun, too.

Why…

Shelbee always comes up with art that’s “off the beaten path,” and I love that. I’m going to have to ask her how she discovers these things! She says, “Ever since learning about the Luddites in a literature class in college, I have loosely identified as one myself! With AI increasing its presence in our world and me not liking it, I thought this was a fun choice of artwork to bring attention to the dangers of our technological advancements.

“The Leader of the Luddites” is an 1812 hand-colored etching published by the 19th century British printmaking firm Walker & Knight, who specialized in politically satirical prints. The actual artist is anonymous

This illustration shows a male anti-industrial protestor wearing a woman’s dress and bonnet in front of a burning building with a crowd of other agitators waving weapons (and their hats) in the air.

While I don’t condone violence of any sort, I still love what this illustration represents…opposition to technology taking away human jobs. And that seems to be even more of a threat today than it was in 1812. I also love that this image offers some fun sartorial inspiration as well!
