Ageless Style: Dog Days of Denim!

We haven’t experienced much of the dog days of summer here in Central Indiana…knock on wood! In fact, today has been one of the best summer days of all. Highs in the 70s (mid 20sC) with low humidity make this blogger quite happy! We have had lots of rain so everyone’s yards are green and lush. They are not the typical August crunch shade of tan. Today is the third Thursday of the month which means it’s time for an Ageless Style challenge. Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style came up with summer denim. That leaves room for lots of interpretation. Last month, Joanne chose one and done. In the past we have done movie characters, spring dresses, white tops polka dots, kind clothing, and many other ideas. If you’re curious, you can find some of my looks  hereherehere, and here. Please do visit the other hostesses of the link party (oh, yes, there’s a link party) at their various sites!

On the hunt…

Apparently, at least according to all the blogs I follow, denim skirts are really going to be on trend this fall. And, most of those will be midi skirts. I’ve been madly searching the retail sites looking for the perfect denim midi skirt that will fit my zucchini body. I know, from experience, pencil skirts are not my friend. They always end up right underneath my bust and just look all kinds of weird. Right now, skirts of any kind don’t do me any favors if I’m perfectly honest. But, I’m always on the hunt. Another thing I’m always searching for is the perfect denim jacket.

A contender…

I recently stumbled upon this denim jacket from Gap. I waited for a sale and then pounced! At the time I ordered it, these jackets were still available in petites which is what I ordered. It’s a much lighter weight than most denim jackets and has just a skosh of stretch to it. Is it perfect? Weeeelll…not really. The pockets aren’t quite right. I like on seam pockets rather than patch pockets in a denim jacket. And, this would be really fabulous if the buttons were snaps instead. But, I’m also one of those people who rarely, if ever, buttons their denim jackets. The other thing is the collar. This is a straight forward collarless jacket with a round collar (if that makes sense). I tried it with a vee neck dress underneath, and it just looked wrong. I’m going to try other necklines to see if I’m stuck with just round collars.

When you’re looking for those pockets!

Hitting the brief…

I am always curious when Jodie chooses the monthly theme. I have absolutely no idea what she will come up with since it’s been in the triple digits in her part of the world for almost the entire summer. I have a couple of denim-ish dresses and a short denim skirt. I was going to use the short skirt until I found this jacket. You’re probably wondering why a denim jacket in the middle of August, right? When we go out for a meal or to see a movie, I am always cold so a denim jacket is the perfect thing. And, the AC is really cranked in most places trying to keep the entire place cool. Inevitably, we are seated near a vent, and I freeze! I have learned to always have a jacket of some kind in the car. That way, if I haven’t already planned for it, I have a backup plan.

The outfit…

I bought this dress last summer when it was on clearance, and I had rewards. That means I probably paid pennies for it. Is it the most flattering to my shape? Nope! I recognize that. Do I mind? Maybe a little, but not enough to not wear it. Is it comfortable and cool? You’d better believe it. I also see, from the photos, it’s a bit transparent with the light just right. But, I gave up slips long ago unless they’re pretty and meant to stick out!

The Lewk!

I can’t help it with these Clarks sandals. They are just perfect with so many different things. My CPM must be in the negatives (CPM = Cost Per Mile). I needed something to fill in that negative space between the sides of the jacket. These two old necklaces from J Jill work perfectly together even though I bought them at least one if not two years apart. The earrings do match one of the necklaces, though.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I wear denim all year long in one form or another. In the summer, it’s usually denim shorts or a denim jacket. My denim dresses tend to be a little heavy for summer weather. Denim is just such a versatile fabric, right? So, can we talk? What kinds of denim do you wear during the summer? Or, do you avoid denim in the warmer months? Have you found the perfect denim midi skirt for the fall and winter? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

  1. This denim jacket looks amazing on you. Loved your style.

  2. We’ve had a cooler and rainier summer than usual too and I find I have been wearing lots of denim this summer. That jacket is so cute! I bet it would work paired with any sort of dress or shirt that has a collar of it’s own.

    • Thanks, Joanne! I have really liked this cool and rainy summer. I just don’t like heat at all. I need to play with this jacket a bit to see what I like and what I don’t like with it.

  3. Such a cute summer look. I’ve been seeing denim skirts trending for fall too, especially the maxi ones. I better grab one before they are all gone.

    • Thanks, Amy! I see that they’re trending but have yet to see any in the stores other than the short ones. I hope to find one soon, too

  4. I think the outfit is very flattering on you!

  5. The denim jacket is perfect with the white dress and the long necklace. This outfit looks great on you! I really like the knee-length skirt on this dress — very flattering! We’re experiencing the “dog days” here in the south. I’ll be so glad when we start to cool down, but that won’t be anytime soon.

    • Thanks so much, Carol! I so rarely wear dresses this short and always feel like I’m exposing too much! I think those dog days may catch up with us next week. I will always think fondly of Savannah and hope to get back there someday.

  6. That dress is a great backdrop for your layered necklaces! Denim jackets can be tough. It feels like they should be the world’s easiest throw-on-and-go topper layer but so many of the details that you mention can really make a difference to how the jacket works in an outfit. I have two blue denim jackets that are somewhat different from each other, and neither is “perfect” but have earned their place in my wardrobe. I’m not really shopping right now but I do have a lightweight white denim jacket on my radar as a nice summer option.

    • Thanks, Sally! We won’t go into how many denim jackets I have. But, they are all different in one way or another. I have a white denim jacket (after giving one away), but I don’t really seem to reach for it much.

  7. I love your title, the Dog Days of Denim!
Your outfit is perfect, and the unique cut of your denim jacket is perfection.

    • Thanks, Rosemary! Always trying to get a good SEO score! I really like this jacket and will wear it so many ways!

  8. Your jacket is fabulous! Love the collarless detail! Such a great layering piece!

  9. I love the white dress and think it’s wonderful for the fact that it’s modern and fits you well. I don’t wear slips either, and I didn’t notice it was see through at all.
As for the jacket. I think it’s nice to have a bunch of different styles because they really do go with everything. In fact, I keep one in every car for those times we go to shops/restaurants. Then I don’t have to worry about taking one.
Maybe this would be a good one for that??
    XOXO
    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! I don’t know that I love this dress. It may be a little bit too baby doll in person. I’m going to play around a lot with this jacket because I really do like the lines of it.

  10. Marsha, this is such a great way to incorporate denim into your summer wardrobe. I love that LWD and the cropped jacket is super cute with it. I think you could also wear a turtleneck (or mock or cowl), a classic button up collar, or a Peter Pan collar with this jacket. Honestly, I think a vee neck is probably the only one that doesn’t work great with the rounded collar. I really like your layered necklaces, too. Cute, cute, cute, my friend!

    Shelbee

    • Thank you, Shelbee! You are probably right about the vee neck. I am going to wear this jacket to bits, I’m sure! I really like it that much!

  11. I really like the light denim with the white dress! I will be trying that soon. I have about 4 denim jackets in different shades of blue and a white as well as a mustard denim jacket. It has taken some time to find ones that I like and they have been different price ranges from thrifted ones to brand names that are a little pricier (nothing crazy though). I love wearing them.

    • Thanks, Mireille. I have a couple of colored denim jackets but rarely reach for them. I also have a white one and thought I’d wear it a lot. But, I seem to always choose a blue one!

  12. I absolutely adore the outfit you put together. A good denim jacket is a must have. I think I’ve had mine for a minimum of 6 years and it’s a workhorse piece in my closet. It layers so well in spring, summer and fall. I am wishing you luck with your skirt hunt..

    bosbodaciousblog.blogspot.ca

    • Thanks, Bo! I have several different ones, and they are all different ages, too! I hope there’s a skirt out there calling my name!

  13. The cleanness of the style really elevates this jacket! Bye bye casual denim! It’s really cute on you!
