Autumnal Equinox Transitioning

Once a teacher…

Trust me, it doesn’t look like this today!

I don’t think Indiana is the only state to use this saying, but we always say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a bit, and it will change!” When we shot these photos on Monday, it was still technically summer. In fact, I think the temperatures were in the mid to high 80’s. Today, the first official day of Fall in the northern hemisphere, it is raining and in the low to mid 50’s! That means my photos don’t exactly match my title! But, that’s ok, because it’s going to be back in the 80’s next week!

Same skirt, three ways!

My plants are done…and, I am done with some of them!

For this first iteration, I tried a little print mixing with this cute knit skirt from J Jill (last year, similar here https://www.jjill.com/product/easy-knit-skirt-221571s-1?color=3XE ) with a striped boat neck tee and a denim jacket. The shoes are from L’Artiste. I have found, over the years, flats are not necessarily my friends. I have insoles in these, but there was something rubbing on my little toe the whole time. I guess it’s time to get some of those Sheec socks Jodie (https://www.jtouchofstyle.com/best-no-show-socks-the-pros-cons/ ) talks about! One of the problems with being so short waisted is skirts tend to ride up. I am not kidding you when I tell you my waistband often ends up right below my bosoms! I find a-line skirts and especially those with an elastic waistband are better suited to my zoftig self right now! When I’m a little more svelte, these kinds of skirts still work! Gosh, am I the only person who ever thought elastic waists were for old ladies?

The accoutrements! All old Stella & Dot jewlery

A little change…

Sometimes, I get the poses right!

For this look, I chose an old, old J Jill cardigan (remember when it was called the Everyday Cardigan? That’s how old it is!) and a white vee neck tee. I chose these Aubrey t-straps by Rockport Cobb Hill although when I bought them they were Cobb Hill by Rockport! These have nice support and a full metal buckle. Don’t you hate it when shoemakers skimp and use a thin leather strap instead of the circle of metal? I have so much trouble getting my shoes buckled when it’s that leather strap instead of metal. I know it’s just a head thing, but it’s irritating! I also put on a multi strand pearl and chain necklace from Stella & Dot as well as an old pearl necklace from Talbots. I chuckled when I realized the Talbots necklace was there! I hang my necklaces from a rod of some type from IKEA so they were on the same hook. It wasn’t until I took them off I saw I was wearing an additional necklace!

Gosh, I almost match my rug!
The extras!

And, a third

And, this was one of the better shots!

For this look, I changed out the tee for a denim shirt. I also traded out the cardigan for a textured hoodie from Old Navy. In theory, I thought this would work. In reality, I don’t like it at all. I think the dropped shoulders do little for me, and it’s all just a little too sloppy. You can tell I don’t feel comfortable in the pictures. I knew it wasn’t a winner, but I’m persistent if nothing else! The color is a good one for me if I have something to separate it from my face. Otherwise, it’s a little too close to my skin and just looks like an extension of my face (not a look one wants any time!). These are Jambu sandals. I bought my first pair of Jambu sandals in 2012 for a trip to London. I wore them all day and didn’t realize I’d worn a blister on my foot until we got back to the hotel! I have lots of numbness in my left foot due to extensive surgeries. Until that time, I hadn’t had any problems with blisters! Now, I know to take extra care with new shoes especially!

Those earrings are probably close to 20 years old! I bought them at Target! They survive every jewelry purge because being a natural wood color makes them a fabulous neutral earring. I usually only wear them in spring and summer. They just don’t feel like fall and winter earrings. Is that weird?

The Lewks

Well, I’ve pretty much discussed all of the looks! I think my favorite is the first one. I like the subtle stripe added to the cute floral print on the skirt. These denim jackets from J Jill are perfect in a petite for me. I have a couple in different colors because they hit me at the right place. They have just enough spandex to make them comfortable, too. J Jill usually has these knit skirts in a fun print every year. But, as soon as I say that, they’ll discontinue them. Isn’t that the way things go?

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I realize these are not typical fall transition looks. But, living in the Midwest where the weather can go from one season to another to another all in one day, these outfits all work. I’m not sure I would wear this skirt in fall or winter, but I would definitely wear all three of the top options all year long. Which of these three looks do you like best? Do you have weather that hopscotches all around? Or, do you live where the weather stays the same all year long? I hope you enjoyed today’s experiment. Please leave a comment. I enjoy talking with you.

  1. You not only look like a blogger, you are one, lol! We have more sunny days the last 3 weeks, then we had hole summer long. I like elastic waist bands too these days, haha, like comfortable more and more, oh boy. Love the spring isch look!

    • Thanks, Nancy! I can’t wrap my brain around the fact I finally decided to have a blog! I’m still in that uncomfortable don’t want to look at the camera phase. We have had lots of sunny days so a dreary, rainy day was actually quite nice. Yep, comfort is definitely high on my list anymore!

      Thanks for coming by!

  2. Love your outfit and how you have styled these looks 🙂

  3. I’m so impressed with your print mixing in that first outfit Marsha. And you’re going to love the Sheec socks….they help so much!!!

    • Thanks, Jodie! I’ve actually mixed stripes for years. It’s such a fun and easy way to do it! My left foot is so weird. ALL socks slip down on it. I hope the Sheec socks work for it!

      Thanks for coming by!

  4. Love the first one the best because if the denim jacket. Being short waisted also, I dont like wearing skirts. I feel like I’m as wide as i am tall. And where the heck is my waist, up at the boobs or down to my knees. I give up lol ? You look marvelous!!

    • Oh, Ainslie! I feel you on the natural waist thing! I’m not entirely sure either…I think it’s the narrowest part…but some days, there are no narrow parts! It’s funny you say that because I love wearing skirts! But, I wear flowy or a-line skirts rather than pencil skirts. It took me too many years of always yanking the dang thing down from under my boobs! I loved your look on Facebook the other day…you gave me a chuckle…but you also looked fabulous!

      Thanks for commenting!

  5. I love how you showed the versatility of this skirt: I have a skirt similar in color and shape that I have never paired any thing but 2 tops with it: you are giving some ideas!! Love your picture by the fence and your yard is really a great backdrop for pictures.

    • Thanks, Mireille! I have been using small stripes to mix with prints for a couple of years. It’s only been in the last year or so that I’ve ventured into bigger prints and stripes! Now that I’ve started blogging, I find I have a reputation (hahaha) to live up to!

I wish I’d blogged in my old backyard…that one was amazing! But, thanks for the compliments. I appreciate them!

  6. Marsha – do yourself a favor and get the Sheecsocks – they are magic! In fact pretty much everything Jodie says is gospel – she knows her stuff and has NEVER steered me wrong.
I like all the outfits and am drawn to the second and third because I love pink. It’s amazing to me just how different that skirt looks when paired with blue vs. pink. I am sort waisted and have such a hard time with waistbands riding up – ugh!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! I am definitely going to give them a try.

I have to be so careful with pinks because, if they’re the wrong shade and worn close to my face, they just create this really awful effect. I learned that the hard way…school picture day…as a teacher! Yep, the short waisted problem is huge for all of us who live with it!

      Thanks for coming by!

  7. Your garden is just beautiful! We are also having wonky weather but I love it. Usually we have a very short fall that rolls into a long and cold winter so the nice temperatures can stick around as long as they want. I like that you showed this skirt three different ways, all working for different purposes. I think I fell in love right away with the denim jacket so that’s my favorite look. Also, I really liked the light green with the floral. Enjoy your week ahead.

    • Thanks so much, Bo! My gardens start to suffer around this time because I’m just kinda tired of them!

It seems like we used to have nice long falls. Now, we have a couple of weeks of fall-ish weather and then off to cold and wet. We don’t even get as much snow as I remember! And, I love snow!

I think that outfit is my favorite, too. I just felt most me in it. I’m not a pink person, but I own a lot! Isn’t that weird?

      Have a fabulous week, too!

  8. I would wear all of these outfits. I am a retired elementary school librarian and there is just something about a skirt, top and cardi that really resonates with me!! Sub in jeans for the skirt, and you have my uniform these days!! Really like the subtle pattern mixing in the first look. And those shoes. They look comfortable but stylish. Got tickled at you posing like a real blogger…silly girl!! I am the most uncomfortable ‘poser’ in the world. Every time I do a style post, I think I am finally going to get good pictures, and look like I know what I am doing, but things never quite work out that way.
I like your patio rug. We have the very same one!! Such pretty colors.

    • Well, Leslie, I am a retired elementary school teacher…so great minds think alike, right? Skirts, tops, and cardigans (don’t tell anyone, but my sweater collection numbers in the many, many) were my go-to along with dresses! I just wasn’t a fan of wearing pants. And, it’s so easy to sit on the floor in a big flowy skirt!

Oh, I think I would definitely win the trophy for most uncomfortable poser! I can get the pose, but then I worry about the smile and the eyes are a dead giveaway! You can tell I’m just out of my element…for now anyway!

This is the third season for that patio rug. We had to take a pressure washer to it this spring…we’d had so much rain and it just kinda turned green! I hope it lasts another season! It really livens up that back space.

Thanks so much for coming by, Leslie!

  9. What a cute – and versatile – skirt! I love all of the ways you’ve styled it Marsha.

    • Thanks, Michelle! It is such a chameleon! Just changing the tops completely alters the look! I had never looked at this skirt that way before, either!

      Thanks for coming by!

  10. All very cute looks – I love elastic waists, but I do remember thinking “old lady” about them when I was a teen. Thank gawd I got over that!

    You have fabulous jewelry, Marsha!

    • Oh, I remember my mom always bought the same pants…elastic waists with a stitched down seam in the front of the leg! She had them in every dark color she could find them! I swore I’d never wear things like that!! Joke’s on me!

Oooh, if you think I have fabulous jewelry, Sheila, I am thrilled!
