Final Fridays: For What It’s Worth!

Number #16

April has been a good month in many ways. The weather has been nice though I did have to cover up some plants a couple of nights when it frosted. And, then, there was the eclipse! I don’t think I will ever forget that. One of the things I liked best about it was the cheering you could hear all around as we reached totality! But, then the month kinda went downhill. I picked up a virus and am still hacking and coughing. Nigel is really struggling with walking, and that has him quite upset. He’s used to being able to walk 3-4 miles a day. Now, he can barely walk to the mailbox. And, it just came on out of nowhere. We are both confuzzled about it. But, the month is drawing to a close. If you’re new to the blog, this is my monthly recap with a few opinions thrown in. Those opinions are the “for what it’s worth” part of this! I’m also throwing a link party so please link up your favorite posts. Don’t have a blog? Don’t worry! You might find a new blog or two!

What I’ve been reading…

I have been intrigued by the Tudors since I was a teenager. This book pivots between Anne and Elizabeth I, giving us a look into their hearts and minds. I enjoyed the book and kinda wish there was a hidden diary. The Baker’s Man is a fun take on a rom com. It leaves you wondering, though. Each Little Bird That Sings is a book I read to my fourth graders. It’s one of those books I can read over and over again. There aren’t many of those. Comfort Snowberger is the main character and is delightful. I think, quite honestly, I liked the book more than my fourth graders did!

A little more…

I have read a couple of books by Lisa See and always learn more about the Chinese culture. Both of these books are well written and relate different time periods in China. Lady Tan’s Circle of Women takes place during the Ming Dynasty (13th and 14th centuries) and tells of the lives of two women, one highborn with bound feet and the other is a peasant with “big feet.” If you’re squeamish about childbirth and such, this book does get into that a bit. The second book begins in Shanghai and ends in the United States. It’s the story of two Chinese sisters and what life was like for them before, during, and after the invasion of the Japanese in the 30s. I’m currently reading the sequel. Both of these books are heartbreaking when you consider foot binding as well as the horrible treatment women received.

What I’ve been watching…

Well, you can’t say we aren’t eclectic in our television viewing! We have watched “Blown Away” since the first season. Nigel and I first saw glass being blown on our honeymoon. This show doesn’t disappoint and is lots of fun. OK, let’s talk “Poor Things.” That was one weird movie. I was shocked when I saw how many Academy Awards it was up for. It reminded me quite a bit of “The Umbrella Academy” only the characters are not as well developed. There just seemed to be so much sex. I am not a prude and really don’t mind sex scenes when they’re true to the story. I’m sure some would argue the character was just exploring her body as a young person would. But, I think that’s an empty argument. The cinematography is glorious, though. “Queen Bees” is lots of fun. It’s a bit like “Poms” but goes further with the story. How did Jane Curtin become an older woman? I somehow will always think of her as Allie from “Kate & Allie” or from the early years of SNL. And, I didn’t recognize Ann-Margret! She is still stunning!

A little more…

We really leaned hard into women-led shows this month. “Girls5eva” was just a little too long for me. The basic premise is a girl group gets back together when they’re older. But, one of the five has died so they’re really only a quartet. That doesn’t even play into anything. The show stars Sara Bareilles as one of the women. Renée Elise Goldsberry also stars. Between the two, you have some amazing vocals, but the songs…the songs are just awful. Bareilles’ character writes the songs, and they’re all about the woes of getting older (like 40 is old). At one point, one of the characters says the fifth member hadn’t died so I thought that would be the story line for the upcoming season. It wasn’t. Ashley Park, the deceased character, appears in some cameos. I think finding Ashley and adding her back to the band would have made “Girls5eva” so much better. The show wasn’t renewed for a “fourth” season which is a tad ironic. On the other hand, I love “Palm Royale.” I didn’t even recognize Kristen Wiig. Alison (Wardrobe Oxygen) wrote about the character’s age here. At first, that really bugged me because Wiig is 50, but once you put that aside, the show is a raucous ride! And, Wiig looks amazing as does Ricky Martin! This is a miniseries rather than a series that might be renewed. It’s definitely star-studded! And, of course, we had to watch “Dream Scenario!” Nigel and I both really like Nicolas Cage, and this was another one of those weird, weird movies he seems to love. I really think Cage is one of the best actors out there, but he just seems to gravitate toward the movies that might make him money rather than those that will showcase his immense talent.

What I’ve been working on…

No progress has been made on any of the sweaters I’ve knitted! In fact, I just inherited an entire trunk load of goodies from my friend who reignited my love of knitting. Last year, she moved out west to live with her daughter. This past week, she was home to clean out her home and discovered lots more stuff! So, I’ll soon be doing some needlepoint. I haven’t done that since high school. I did finish my scarf and started another scrapghan. I was making progress at clearing out yarn until this past week.

What I’ve been buying…

Next year will be the year I pay attention, I swear! I got off to a good start, and then it just fell apart. This past month, I bought a couple of things from Gudrun Sjödén as well as from April Cornell. I also bought the black version of this dress (seen here). I also bought a couple of patterned cardigans and a lace top (seen here) from Talbots.

Where I’m going…

Well, you already know about my trip to Ireland and Scotland, but there’s a possibility I might be going to London after the New Year. The plans are still in the works, but I’ll be sure to let you know if it happens. Nigel’s back and hips are preventing us from doing much of any kind of traveling right now. Positive thoughts are certainly welcome.

What I’ve been wearing…

Goodness! I didn’t do much in the way of fashion this month! I need to improve that!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

While April started out with that glorious eclipse, it’s ending on a bit of a bummer. I’m hoping Nigel receives some good information from his orthopedist soon. Physical therapy just isn’t cutting it. I’m trying to be as supportive as I can, both literally and realistically, but it’s tough seeing him struggle with this. I’m looking forward to May and planting flowers. I’ve got to decide what’s going where. So, can we talk? How has your April been? Have you seen any of these movies or shows? Read any of these books? How are you feeling about the coming summer/winter? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

Thank you!

  1. Oh wow, I can’t believe it’s just about the end of April too! Here in the UK it’s been a dreadful weather type month as it’s been sooo cold! Plus lots of grey clouds and rain as well. We do get the occasional warm day and then it goes and it’s cold again.

Oh wow, Poor Things, I thought I’d hate it so we waited until we could stream it, but I loved it!! However, we don’t think it’s suitable for our local community cinema! I’m sending get well wishes to Nigel, hope he gets some answers soon.

    • April did kind of fly by, didn’t it? We have been lucky with this month. We’ve had cool rainy weather, but we’ve also had lots of sunny days. Penny, you’ll have to tell me why you loved Poor Things. I just didn’t get it at all. I’m betting there would be some who would like it, but those who didn’t would be the loudest, right?

Thanks, Penny, for your well wishes. We have begun to get some answers, but we have to wait a bit for the definitive one.

  2. So much goodness here! I guess I need to watch Palm Royale now and I loved Poor Things even though it was a little crazy. The message was great. I adore the graphic print dress on you and how excited that you might be adding London to your travel plans.

    • Thanks so much, Kathrine! You will love Palm Royale if only for the fashion! OK, so what was the message of Poor Things? I must be shallow because it eludes me! I did love the fashion in it, though. If I go to London, it will probably be after the New Year.

  3. Oh no poor Nigel!! Is he seeing anyone about the pain? I will keep him in my prayers!

I can’t wait to watch Palm Royale! We are waiting until summer to watch it, but everything about it appeals to me. The cast, the set, the plot. I can’t wait!

    • Thank you, Erin! Yes, he’s been seeing an orthopedist and going to physical therapy. We have gotten a couple of answers and now have to wait for a few more.

You will love Palm Royale. It’s really over the top. The first episodes are the best, I think.

  4. I haven’t read any of these books or seen any of the shows and movies you mentioned.. I see one or two I do want to add to my lists though. I’m sorry to hear Nigel is having such problems with movement and hope you get some answers soon!

    • It’s weird we’ve been missing each other’s lists because I have almost always read a couple you have. I think we are on the path to getting some answers but not for a bit.

      Thanks, Joanne!

  5. I feel like I need to start with, “long time lurker, first time poster.” 🤣 I really do read all of your posts though! Have you read “The First Ladies” by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray? I’m not quite finished yet, but I keep thinking you would love this book as I have read it.
And we too are praying for answers and relief for Nigel. You guys have worked so hard and deserve to enjoy a wonderful retirement!

    • Hahaha!!! I have not read that book. I will put it on my list. It sounds like something I would like. Thanks for the prayers, Steph. It’s been hard.

  6. Great catch up. Pinned your book suggestions. I tend to read too much serious, sad historical fiction so the rom com would be a pleasant change. Love your crochet projects. Have always wanted to learn but have so many hobbies already and not enough time to do everything I want to do. We have been watching “Call the Midwives” but it is beginning to get old. Although, I appreciate the social issues they have touched on.
Can’t wait to hear about your travel plans in more detail. I am dreaming of a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales but instead I will be watching the grands while my daughter and her husband visit those places in June. Waaaaaaa.

    • If you like the book I read to my fourth graders, there’s another book by that author called The Aurora County All-Stars. I like the Bird one better, but it’s still good. I started watching “Call the Midwives” when it first came out and then got away from it. I’ve just never gone back to it.

You are a good grandmother, but I would be jealous, too!

      Thank, Leslie!

  7. Thanks for the shout out Marsha, what a sweet surprise!
I could not finish watching Poor Things – I stopped almost (maybe) half way through? It was just weird. I thought maybe it was just me! I love the fashion in Palm Royale and totally agree with you, Wiig looks fantastic. I don’t care much for the story line but I sure love watching it and seeing what the ladies are wearing!
Sorry you had that virus and I sure hope Nigel feels well soon. I am very excited about your trip! We went to London, Scotland, and Ireland for our 25th anniversary and I wish I could go back and spend more time in each place!
    Have a good weekend!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • You are welcome, Kellyann! You looked so chic in your slip dress! I kept watching it, hoping something would make sense. It seems many people really liked it. I agree about the fashions on Palm Royale! I don’t know who my favorite even is because they all have such specific looks. I thought the first few episodes were good, but it has definitely taken a downward turn.

We went to London for our 25th, too! But, that was 23 years ago! My friend and I will be there for more than two weeks, I think. I really need to add that to my calendar!

      Thanks, Kellyann!

  8. I’m so sorry about your husband. Has he tried any physical therapy?
That’s the avenue I’ve decided to go with my neck and headaches. Since the chiropractor and everything else hasn’t been helping I need to try something else.
And I’m so excited I finished my vest that I was working on during our knitting zooms. You’ll see it in tomorrow’s daily outfit post!
    Xoxo
    Jodie

    • Yes, he’s been in physical therapy for several weeks now. It seems to have made him worse, but we have some answers and need a few more. Oh, I can’t wait to see your vest! You have speedy needles!

      Thanks, Jodie!

  9. I’m so sorry to hear that Nigel is struggling; that must be difficult coming out of nowhere and causing such a change from his previous ability to walk several miles – sending all the good vibes your way! I always enjoy seeing what you’re reading/watching/creating, and it definitely puts some unfamiliar things on my radar.

    • Thank you, Sally! It has been very strange to see someone I depend upon struggle with getting up from his chair. We are on the path to finding an answer, though, so that’s a good thing. Yep, we definitely watch some weird things…aka unfamiliar!

  10. Hi Marsha I’m so happy you could link up with us at #WBOYC? I would be keen to read The Secret Diary of Ann Boleyn especially after the Henry VIII question in your 10 on the 10th during April. I’ve not heard of any of the shows you have been watching. I’ve been mainly watching UK series such as Beyond Paradise, Shetland and other cozy crimes. I love your crochet work. I used to crochet but haven’t for quite some time. It can be very relaxing. Have a wonderful May and look forward to reading your posts. x

    • Thank you for the link up! That book was an interesting take on what might have been. And, then, factor in the Style Imitating Art with the Book of Hours and you’ve got a trifecta for Anne Boleyn! I like to crochet, but I love to knit. The only problem with knitting is you have to pay closer attention! I hope your May is glorious, Sue!

  11. Marsha, I am sending healing thoughts and prayers for both you and Nigel. I hope he is able to find relief soon. We watched Queen Bees with my mother-in-law and we laughed so hard. She lives in a retirement community and said the movie is so accurate! I also loved Poms. Girls5Eva made me laugh! I thought the songs were purposely that bad which had me cracking me up at every episode. Thank you so much for featuring my Coffee Break curtain! I may have found a home for her!

    Shelbee

    • Aww, Shelbee, you are the best. He’s on the way to getting some answers so fingers crossed! I was so glad all of the Queen Bees ended up being friends. It’s funny that your MIL says the same thing. You are probably right about the songs being bad on purpose! My favorite character was Gloria…she was just such a hoot…her spreadsheet cracked me up! I’m glad your Coffee Break curtain might have a new home.

      Thanks again!

  12. Good luck with the orthopedist. If you come to London you must meet up with me and Penny! Thanks for the link-up.

    • Thanks, Gail! I will definitely let you and Penny as well as Irene and Paula know. It would be wonderful to meet all of you!

  13. I adore that scarf … In fact I’ve been wanting to knit something similar. Did you work it vertically with multiple colour changes across the rows or horizontally? Thanks for linking up with us.

    • Thanks so much, Joanne, for hosting this party! I work it horizontally with every row being a different color of yarn. You just cut it off for the fringe as long as you want then, pick up a new color making sure to leave a long tail for the fringe. When you have it as wide as you want, you bind off, then knot all the fringed ends. It’s a fun way to use up yarn. I like to put in different textures, too.

  14. Hi, Marsha – Thank you for linking up with us at #WBOYC. I’m sending positive thoughts to you and Nigel that all is well and that your travel plans will go smoothly. Please keep us posted.

    • Thank you so much for the positive thoughts. We are beginning to get some answers but not enough that I’m going to share just yet. And, thank you for the link party!
