I was intrigued by this painting, and that was before I read about the artist! He was definitely a character. Unfortunately, he chose alcohol and brawling one time too many. If you want to read the post with all the info and more information about my look, you can find it here. The interpretations for the artwork are quite varied! So, without further ado…

Gallery of style…
First up is Sally from Within a World of My Own. She says, “Unsurprisingly, color lover that I am, I focused on the lighter part of the painting as the inspiration for my look. The green, orange, and magenta section of the painting where the women have stacked furniture and draping fabric led me to pick out this new-to-me thrifted floral scarf as the centerpiece of my outfit. The soft pink ground and beige hanging rug inspired my blush pink and taupe-beige base outfit. I finished the look with DIY bracelets and earrings that coordinate with the scarf. I flipped the ratios of light and dark from the dark-based artwork to a light-based outfit to create a look that suited my desire for a more “spring-like” vibe.”

Next up is Shelbee who writes, “I was thoroughly stumped for this one but as I walked into my closet room, my old Kantha Bae robe was hanging on the door and it struck me as the perfect piece for this artwork. The patterns and colors very accurately capture the feel of the garments and tapestries hanging in the market in the painting. Although I have worn this robe for two previous SIA challenges (“Les Muses” by Maurice Denis and “The Garden of Hesperides” by Edward Burne-Jones) I never hesitate to restyle something in my wardrobe. It shows that I actually do wear the things in my closet on repeat! Since the robe was doing most of the work for this challenge, I created a base layer in yellow and rust with black accessories because those three colors seem to dominate the painting. I was fairly happy with the result of this outfit except this yellow tee shirt seems to pull and tug in all the wrong places! ”

Here is Salazar who writes, “I was struggling with this, but then your comment about the painting being bright colors surrounded by darker shades gave me an idea, so I went with this white blouse paired with my tapestry waistcoat, jeans, and lace-up boots. The embroideries on the blouse and the pattern on my waistcoat are a nod to the details in the painting as well (the store in the center of the painting is displaying carpets/upholstery, so the tapestry totally fits!) It’s a bit of a loose interpretation, but I’m happy with it.”

Finally, here I am! It seems, with Style Imitating Art, I either choose Kantha Bae or April Cornell. This time, I went with two Kantha Bae pieces. I saw (or maybe I just chose to see) more bright colors than dark (kinda like Sally). So, I pulled out this Crepe Sari Dahlia Duster dress and wore it over a Pixie Skirt in much darker colors. I was pretty pleased with it for an SIA challenge, but I wouldn’t wear it anywhere. The skirt has a very voluminous waistband and bunches up the dress a bit too much for my liking.

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!
I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sally, Salazar, and Shelbee for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!
Coming up…
I hope you’ll come back next Monday to see the art work we’ll be styling and imitating! And, please visit all of the people who participated in this week’s challenge!
