Gallery of Style: Harlem at Night!

Harlem at Night by Charles Alston

I love this piece of art! There is so much going on in it from the colors to the textures to the story it tells. Your eye is constantly moving from place to place in it as you try to understand it better. If you want to read the post with all the info and more information about my look, you can find it here. This artwork was pretty popular because we have several looks! So without further ado, here we go!

Gallery of Style…

First, we have Daenel returning to the SIA. Daenel used to be one of the curators. She says, “When I initially saw the title of the painting, I thought about the Harlem Renaissance, which is my favorite era, but when I looked closely at the painting, the theme seemed more current. Therefore, I opted to try to match the colors with the oranges and greens and blacks and browns.”

Sally’s interpretation is: “I loved how this painting lent itself so well to a print mix outfit even though it doesn’t contain any prints.  I wanted to get the color scheme, the geometric nature of the buildings, and the spots of warm light into my outfit, and a print mix was the best way to do it from my closet.  I finished off my look with hand-made earrings and bracelets: the combination of a four-wrap memory wire bracelet stacked with two individual stretch bracelets was an experiment, but I really liked the result.”

Shelbee says, “This challenge turned out to be really easy. I had just shared photos of my new blue and gold silk robe layered over a leopard print dress and I realized the colors and mixed prints really captured the essence of the nighttime Harlem scene. I added an old patterned scarf because the colors were perfect and it really added to the chaos of different prints. I wore gold jewelry and black accessories to represent the dominant black and gold colors in the painting. There is also a significant amount of red in the painting so I added a bold red statement necklace and there are some red crystals in the rooster brooch on my hat. I was really pleased with how this outfit turned out but I think my snowy white background detracts from the dark moodiness of the artwork. But I cannot control the weather so I shall not fret about it!”

Next up is Salazar who says, ”I knew right away I’d wear these trousers – the yellow plaid on the black background is perfect for the strong lines in the painting – but for the top, I had to think a bit. At first, I was going to wear one of my celestial sweaters to mimic the lights, but then I remembered my “cityscape” sweater. The colors are a bit brighter, but the city scene is too perfect to pass up. I also added my scarf as a nod to the subtle touches of red and blue in the painting.”

Finally, here I am! It’s funny how my initial impressions of a painting usually send me off in the wrong direction. Even though I’ve seen this painting many, many times, I was convinced the main thing about it was the presence of lots of black stripes. While there are lots of them, there is also a lot of yellow, or dark ochre. Once again, I pivoted and came up with this outfit, featuring a Kantha Bae Daisy blouse with that dark yellow and touches of blue. I did use black in my slip skirt. But, I think what really drew the outfit together was the blue striped tee from Gudrun Sjoden! It may be one of my best interpretations yet!

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!
