How to Wear Red in the Spring!

Wear red in the spring…

I’m betting each and every one of you knows how to wear red in Spring, right? I’m working on my SEO (search engine optimization) so titles beginning with “How to” help a lot. I suppose that’s because people search for “how to wear red in the Spring,” and Google recognizes that.

How to wear red…

My advice would be to find the shade or shades of red that work for you. I know color analysis is really in vogue right now. I’ve never had it done though I kinda think I’m a winter. What I know is that reds with a blue undertone work best for me. The same is true with pinks. I don’t have quite as much problems with reds that have a different undertone (like yellow), but I have to be very careful with pink. I love a good peach…the fuzzy kind as well as the color! I cannot, however, wear it close to my face if it’s got the wrong undertone. I’m not 100% sure what that undertone is, but I recognize it when I’m looking at it! I was going to say orange, but strangely enough, I can wear orange. I suppose, once again, it’s the undertone that makes the difference.

What colors to wear with red…

I guess the only suggestion I would have would be to avoid green! And, that would only apply if you were talking about the Christmas red and Christmas green! I don’t know that there are any colors you shouldn’t wear with red. I would definitely wear pink with red even though there used to be a fashion rule saying you shouldn’t. I’d also wear purple, yellow, and blue! What about the neutrals? Well, that’s the beauty of a neutral…you can wear them with anything, including red. Black and red always make a striking statement, don’t you think?

Who should wear red…

My belief is that anyone who wants to wear red should do so. I know, once upon a time, redheads were advised against wearing red. Luckily, that rule went right out the window along with the one about mixing red and pink! There is a red for everyone. I know, I know! I’m contradicting myself right there. I just wrote I couldn’t wear peach. The truth is I can’t wear the peach most of us think of. I could wear the right peach if it had that wonderful blue undertone. I just googled that…I can’t seem to find a peach with a blue undertone. Anyone have any ideas?

Color analysis…

Once upon a time, I thought about having my colors done. At that time, I just didn’t have the extra cash with three young people in the home who thought they needed college educations. Actually, they didn’t necessarily think they needed them as much as their parents expected it of them! These days, I do have the money, and I know there are people who will analyze your colors for you online or virtually. I would prefer the in person experience because I know monitors and photos can present colors in a completely different way. I should look into that…maybe after my trip later this summer.

Red or pink…

When I looked at the color for this Tropic Bouquet dress, the April Cornell site lists it as pink. I really would describe it as red. It has so many different colors in the print. There’s blue, purple, green, yellow, burgundy…you name it, and it’s probably in this dress! It also has tiers (though you have to look hard to find them) and those cute tassel ties. I never know whether or not to tie them. I usually leave them untied as they rarely stay tied. And, oh, happy day! It has pockets!!! Even though I’m short, I’m always surprised that the pockets of dresses fall in the right place for me. This dress just makes me happy and will be worn many, many times this year and for years to come! If you hurry, this dress is on sale through midnight tonight (Thursday, May 9), and you can use my code, MARSHA15, for $15 off a $100 order.

The Lewk!

I bought these sandals almost two years ago. I’m afraid they’re those “walk to the table and back” kind. You know what I mean, right? You can only walk to the table in the restaurant and back to the car. Most people mean that because the heels are so high. I mean it because these gorgeous sandals won’t stay on my feet. I need to google that to figure out a work around. I decided to pull out the purples in my dress and wore this chunky amethyst bracelet. I bought this at a cute little boutique in Winona Lake in Northeast Indiana years and years ago. I bought the earrings on eBay.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I don’t have much red in my closet. I have shied away from that color for so many years, but I’m not sure why. After seeing some of my photos on posts, I decided red was, indeed, a color I needed to add to my closet. Will it overtake blues and purples? I highly doubt it! So, can we talk? Are there colors you feel like you can’t wear? Have you experimented with different undertones and changed your mind? Do you know of a peach with a blue undertone? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as quickly as I can.

  1. Love this dress, Marsha! As you know I’ve recently discovered Red and this would be perfect for an Aussie Christmas. Very festive x

    • Thanks, Sue! You look fabulous in red. Isn’t it funny how we avoid a color only to discover it’s really good on us? And, yes, this would be the perfect dress for an Aussie Christmas!

  2. Wearing red in spring is such a classic choice! It’s great that you found what shades work best for you. The dress looks stunning on you, especially with its colorful print and pockets. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and style tips!

    • Thank you so much, Doris! It was interesting to discover this past spring how much I like the way I look in red. I think it all has to do with the changes in my hair and coloring.

      Thanks, again!

  3. I never wear red. But…..I bought a red skirt and jumper and I will be wearing it on the blog soon. Monochrome red! Because I also find it difficult to wear red with another colour. Pink is the only colour I like with red. That said, you are wearing a fabulous dress!

    • That is a gorgeous color on you Marsha! Funny how it was described as pink. It’s amazing how color can be so subjective!!
Those sandals are beautiful but I know exactly what you mean!
      Xoxo
      Jodie

      • Thanks, Jodie! Yep, I was pretty sure it was red, but Sally sees it as pink! So, maybe it’s like that dress that was either gold or blue! I’m determined to find out how to fix these sandals so I can wear them all the time!

    • Hahaha!!! Nancy, you crack me up. I think you’re being influenced! My guess is you are stunning in red and can’t wait to see it! Thank you, my friend!

  4. That is a gorgeous dress and suits you so well. The colour is just lovely and I’d wear it. I haven’t had my colours done as I don’t want to be constrained to a certain number of colours and anyway I know I can’t wear navy and dark blue and some reds that are bluer – I love vivid reds and oranges and especially yellow, so I think I might be Autumn. I think one can work out what is best re: colours without having to pay loads of money to someone you don’t know!!!

    That dress is absolutely you!

    • Thank you so much, Penny! I thought I’d take a chance on it because I wasn’t sure if it would be too long as well as not being sure of the color! I think color analysis would be fun, but then I’d always be questioning myself. That would not be fun. I have discovered, over the years, what works for me as well as what doesn’t. I think I’m a winter, but who knows! You are too kind, my friend!

  5. This is such a pretty dress and perfect on you but I agree it is red not pink. I have worn red over the years but not for a while when my hair was coloured but now its grey maybe its time to again. I haven’t had my colours done as I feel it pigeonholes you into a particular way of thinking and most of us have a pretty good idea as to what tones suit us best.

    • Thanks, Jill! I feel the same way about having my colors done though others swear by it. I think it’s fun to experiment, too! I think you could find a red you will love…probably in a really funky skirt!

  6. I feel like there may be a dress-color controversy here because the dress looks pink to me! That pink that is almost red but not quite. Whatever you call it, though, it is a great color on you! My worst color is a mustard-gold; it makes my skin tone look about the same color as this dress. True warm oranges are my second worst color. I do wear both of these colors, but I avoid wearing them in tops/toppers that are right next to my face. I keep my eye out for lighter, cooler yellow tones, and when I can find an orange that is either toned down with some grey or has some pink/coral to it, I will choose that instead. I also tend to avoid the red-orange version of red – the one with that very warm undertone – because like you, I do better in a blue-based red. I bought a sweater on final sale in that red-orange poppy red color and it was NOT a great choice – lesson learned! But I have a skirt in the same color and it looks fine.

    • Thanks, Sally! It took me a long time to understand the undertones were what were making something unwearable for me. I can’t tell you how many things I would buy only to never reach for them. For example, I love Kelly green, but I can’t wear it. It’s too yellow for me. Hahaha!! I think that’s funny you see the dress as pink. I really think it’s all about the monitors these days.

  7. Red or pink or whatever it’s called that is a lovely dress!

  8. A lovely colour on you Marsha, it does look pinky/red to me but it suits you well. A nice style for summer outings 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Debbie! You know, it’s funny…whenever I see orange now, I always think of you!! This dress will get many wearings over the spring, summer, and fall.

  9. Red is such a powerful color, and your dress is fabulous! Love the print for spring!

    Jill – Doused in Pink

    • Thanks, Jill! I have never thought of myself as powerful, but maybe I am going into my powerful era!

  11. I really like to wear red but I don’t have a lot of it! I do have a couple kimono with red undertones, they are more of a dark coral color. I found that pinks can be tricky but I thrifted this one dress that is just the perfect pink on me.

    • I am like you…I have to be very careful with pink. I am beginning to discover I really like oranges and reds!

      Thanks, Mireille!

  12. I love me some red! (But only in clothes, haha…not ever the lipstick…Now I have to go back and check your lipstick to see what you wore with the lovelyflowybeautifuldress–why do I wonder these things?). I have to rotate my closet to access my red jeans, but the rest of my reds are already hung and awaiting their turn, so thanks for the reminder.
I think this particular dress is an easy button for you because it tracks a very pink red. But whatever color, it is VERY pretty!

    • Hahaha!! Nope, I do own a tube of red lipstick. I think it’s Mac Ruby Woo, but I could be wrong. And, I never wear it! I am beginning to realize I like reds, oranges, and yellows. Weird how we finally figure these things out, right?

      Thanks, Em!
