In a Brown Mood

Short post today…maybe…

I was in a brown mood today, at least as far as my clothing goes! Color has its own psychology, and I find it fascinating. According to this article, brown can signify “stability, structure, and support”. Does that mean all of my bras should be brown (insert drum and eye roll)? Actually, the article is rather interesting although I don’t know how much science is behind this exact site. You can also read about your personality through your favorite color.

Embroidery for the win!

Take a peek in my closet. You won’t find much brown there with the exception of shoes and boots. I’ve never been drawn to brown. April Cornell had a Boxing Day sale, and this dress kept calling to me. Part of it was the word “tunic”. Most of the allure was the embroidery, I’ll admit it. I wasn’t sure just how brown the dress would be given my monitor’s inability to distinguish navy from black sometimes. Yet, the tunic aspect, the embroidery, and the sale price led me to buy it. And, I love it, but a tunic it is not! The embroidery, though, is outstanding! There are shades of rose, green, and a bit of blue. And, it has pockets! I’m wearing a pair of Tapestry leggings. I’m not even sure what color they are, but the embroidery on them almost perfectly matches the embroidery on the dress! And, I bought them years ago! I don’t know…is the dress too long? It’s a weird length on me. The leggings might disguise that, but I don’t think I’d wear the dress bare legged anyway.

Smokey topaz

My oldest granddaughter has brown eyes, but I’ve always told her they were smokey topaz! I don’t think you can zoom in close enough to figure out my eye color! I’ll just tell you. I have green eyes. Did you know only 2% of people have green eyes? That makes me rather unique, right? None of my kids have green eyes. Two have blue eyes; my youngest has hazel. Nigel’s are a greyish-blue. The Mad Hatter also has/had green eyes as does Harry Potter. That puts me in some rather exceptional company, right? I’m probably more like the Mad Hatter than Harry Potter. Oh, how I love those big wonderful hats they wear at the Kentucky Derby! But, I digress.

So doggone windy!

Our weather has turned cold. I don’t know if it’s the way our house is situated or what, but it is always so windy here. The day we took these photos the wind was particularly rough. I didn’t venture off of the porch because a) it was cold, b) it was windy, and c) Nigel didn’t want to put his shoes on! Since it’s so cold, we haven’t taken down the Christmas decorations though I think I can get away with calling them winter decorations!

The Lewk

I decided to pick up on the little bit of blue in the embroidery for my jewelry. My ring is a London topaz while the bracelet is just plain blue topaz. Both are old and came from eBay back when I was teaching (which makes them more than 10 years old). My necklace is David Yurman and years old. My earrings and other bracelet are John Hardy. You can read about my earrings’ adventure here. The boots are from Born (similar).

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I know I feature a lot of April Cornell clothing, but it’s my style. It’s defined me for so many years. Even my students recognized it and would comment on “another April Cornell dress”! If you like this dress, you might want to check out the site. April is running the “End of Season” sale right now, and the prices are really good. Let me know if you buy anything, and we can talk about it! Do you think colors have certain qualities and influence us? And, do you think I need to shorten this dress? Let’s have a conversation of any kind. I’d love to answer your questions or respond to your comments! And, if you’d like, please consider subscribing to my blog! As always, thanks for coming by!

  1. I like the length of the dress just fine. The close up really shows how pretty the print is. You could always had a belt for a different look too. I understand how the embroidery drew you to it. Very pretty! I went shopping with my mom yesterday at Jcpenney. We found some things on clearance and i ended up with 2 dresses and a top for a total of $10 (clearance +b1g1) that she paid with a gift card: so far i ha e spent only $12 on clothes this month! ?

    • Oh, I didn’t even think of belting it! Thank goodness for fashionista friends! I’ll have to give it a try!

Wow! I have never scored a deal like that unless I’m using my Banana Republic rewards and Old Navy Cash. What a fun trip you must have had!

  2. I love the pretty dress and adore the beautiful embroidery on it! These shades of brown is lovely and the jewels are amazing as always!

    • Thanks so much, Kathrine! The embroidery is even more gorgeous IRL! I was on a real blue topaz kick for a while. I love finding different things to wear it with!

      Thanks for coming by!

  3. If it were my dress, I probably would hem it just an inch or two since it’s that weird in-between length that I never seem to know what to do with. I do love the embroidery on it though. I have recently begun adding a bit more brown/ rust into my wardrobe and tend to turn to those colors more in fall and winter.

    • Thanks, Joanne! I’m not sure what I’m going to do just yet. I think I’ll probably see the other ways I wear it to see if I’m going to do that or not. I really took a chance on it because I’m not usually a fan of brown.

      Thanks for coming by!

  4. We LOVE Downton Abbey and cannot wait until the next movie is released. It is a series I could watch over and over again!
The wind always seems to pick up when I am outside doing photos! UGH!

    • Thanks for the invite, Kellyann! I did just that! Downton Abbey is just such a joy to watch…I love the Dowager’s witty and snide remarks. I’m anxiously awaiting the new movie, too!

Oh, the wind here is terrible…all year long! I think it may be because of the stand of trees behind us that causes some of it, but wind is always on my mind…tornadoes terrify me!

      Thanks for coming by!

  5. Love the tunic dress, and the shoes are a great match! Happy new year!

    • Happy New Year to you, Marie! Thank you so much! I love the dress and boots, too!

Thanks so much for coming by!

  6. Downton Abbey is such a beautiful series, I loved it so much. Also love brown dresses, such a warm colour!

    • It really is a gorgeous series! I hope we can make it back to the UK some day. I think I could finally persuade Nigel to go and visit with the Granthams! I knew you’d love this dress as it’s brown! I am not usually drawn to browns, but I’ve noticed most of my burgundies and purples have a distinctly brown undertone!

      Thanks, Nancy!

  7. Personally I like having dresses of all different lengths in my closet. And this length is nice for sitting because then it’s not riding up and showing everything!!
Don’t you love when things match from years apart? It goes to show you’re buying what you love.

    • I like having all kinds of dresses, too. But, sometimes, I’m blinded by my own love for something! This dress is so comfy. I know I’ll be wearing it lots! Those leggings have got to be four or five years old so I was really surprised the embroideries matched so closely!

      Thanks, Jodie!

  8. I’ve looked t enough April Cornell to know that where the dress was from the moment I laid eyes on it. The embroidery is fantastic! And I agree with you, it’s not a tunic. But it looks so lovely with your Tapestry leggings. So it’s a win, even if it’s not a tunic. Awesome look, Marsha!

    • Awww, thanks, Michelle! As much as I like Johnny Was, you can never be sure if their embroidery is real or if it’s just part of the print. With April Cornell, you can tell. And, they tell you right in the description! I was so surprised when the embroideries matched so well!

      Thanks for coming by!

  9. I don’t mind the length – it’s perfect for walking, sitting and hanging out. You had me at pockets! 🙂 I am a fan of brown (as you know).

I also have green eyes! I had one great aunt who also had green eyes, but no one else in my family.

    • I wish I knew what color eyes my relatives had. I’m not even sure what colors my siblings’ are! I should ask them, but they’d wonder why I was asking! I think I will keep it this length for a bit…try it with different shoes and tights before I do anything drastic!

Well, I should have known you have green eyes! Unique people…that’s us!

  10. The embroidery details on the dress is so pretty and the dress is a wonderful color! Have a great day!

  11. We rarely have a still, windless day here. But even when the wind is calm, my hair tends to look like I have just come through a tornado!! Oh, well.

Interesting about green eyes. My (ex)husband’s eyes are dark brown, mine are blue and both of my daughters have green eyes. Didn’t realize they are so rare. You have such pretty coloring…complexion, hair, eyes. This brown is lovely on you. I have a pair of trouser socks that look something like this dress and your tights. I love them!! And the embroidery kicks it up a notch.

    • Hair…I swear it is the bane of my existence sometimes! I don’t recall it being so windy at our old house, but that was 2.5 hours north of us and on the Great Lakes Plain. I now live near the Southern and Lowlands. I remember my geography from teaching Indiana History!!!

I was surprised to find that information about green eyes, too. I’d heard they were rare, but I didn’t know they were that rare. Thank you so much for the compliments. I’ve never felt as comfortable in my skin as I do now (although there is far too much filling out that skin right now). Brown is not a color I tend to buy, but that embroidery was calling my name! I think I’ll need to find some more!
