Life Lately

Memories and tears…

Might as well hop on…

It seems everyone has been posting about “Life Lately” so I thought I’d hop on that train of thought or blogging. Granted most of those posts are about proms, graduations, and weddings! Mine is about lists, boxes, and those “Oh, sh*t” moments.

Just one of a “few” boxes from the craft room!

Confused?

Just to recap, Nigel and I sold our house recently. We even had closing right on time! Now, we have this nice healthy bank account and no house. Well, that’s not exactly true. Part of the agreement to purchase our house included a clause allowing us to live here rent free for until the end of July. That seems like lots of time, doesn’t it? In one way, it does seem like a lot of time. In another, it’s not enough at all. I mean, it’s two months, right? But, I have to pack up this whole house and figure out how we’re going to move. Nigel will make phone calls, but when it comes to packing, that’s me! And, that’s because I’m picky and a little obsessive about how I want things packed! He does the heavy lifting, though!

Oh, I hate messes!

‘Splain that to me, Lucy!

We are building a free standing condo in a small community only minutes from our house. They started moving dirt in the last week of April. We have a tentative finish date of July 31st. Now, if everything goes as planned, we are golden. If, however, that doggone supply chain rears its nasty face, we might be up that certain creek without a paddle. Well, we have a teeny, tiny paddle…we can live in the house during August and pay a daily rent. But, I honestly want to be out by the end of July as the new owners are expecting a baby in September. I don’t think it’s fair to expect them to move and get ready for a new baby in a month. So, cross your fingers that all goes smoothly and quickly!

I don’t even want to lift those!

A moving trick…

One of the things I did the last time we moved was to wrap fragile items in clothing! So, my good plates are cradled right this very minute in my cashmere sweaters! My drinking glasses and mugs are comfortably crated in merino cardigans! I’m sort of killing two birds with one stone…I’m not only packing up the kitchen and dining room…I’m packing up my clothes. Does it take more space? Yes, a little bit. But, it worked the last time, and I’m hoping it works this time!

My beloved Mason Cash bowls and a couple of “vintage” ceramic pots

The Lewk!

Honestly? Sweaty, hair in a pony tail, too short shorts, and a tank top! No makeup, accessories, or shoes! That’s what I’m wearing today! And, you don’t want to see it!

And, we just renovated that dining room last year!

June 10 on the 10th Reminder

Wrap it up, Marsha!

Oh, that’s painful because it seems like I’ve been wrapping it all up forever! So, can we talk? How do you prepare for a move? Do you hire it done, or are you DIYers? 1. Marsha – I know exactly what you are going through. After packing up our home in Valparaiso (we lived there 35 years). The kiddos want nothing. Stephanie got to the point – telling Olivia don’t take anything from Grandma, unless she offers you money! Lol . Good luck my friend – I feel your pain!

    • Hahaha!!! I did not know Steph told Livi that! I think Josh has vetoed everything I’ve asked him about…though Steph is taking some books to school! I almost emailed you so many times when you were in the still thinking about selling stage to tell you not to do it! But, I knew someone wouldn’t have been happy with me! I so regret moving from our house…that big yard and knowing everyone and everywhere…it’s hard moving to a new community where you know no one! But, that’s not a problem with you…you make friends wherever you go!

  2. Good luck on the packing! I hope your condo is finished in tine. Can’t wait to see the new place!

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I hope it’s done on time, too! We haven’t spoken to the builder in a bit, but the build itself seems to be going quite quickly!

  3. I am excited about your next step – moving can’t be fun but it’ll be worth it in the end!

    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! I sure hope it’s worth it. My closet seems to shrink a little more every time we go out to the build site!

  4. I pretty much did all of the packing on each of our moves, the last one was 4 years or so ago and I had a 3 month old at the time. Then friends and family helped load up but mostly friends. I like your trick of using clothes to wrap fragile things.

    • Oh, my goodness, Mireille! I don’t know how you did it! I’m hoping we have three big guys to help us with the move! Nigel has yet to decide the logistics!

  5. Talk about a little stress. I’m not a betting woman, but with everything I’ve heard, I hope you have a Plan B about where to live. Two months?? That would be a miracle.

PS. Love the idea of packing the fragile things in clothes. Interesting way to kill two birds with one stone.

    • Well, no, we don’t actually have a Plan B yet! Everyone has told us the builder has been doing this so long that when he says we’re 30 days from closing, we’ll be 30 days from closing! We were talking to one of our new neighbors tonight. He and his wife both said they’d not seen a house going up so well and so quickly as ours.

And, I don’t know how I stumbled upon using sweaters to pack…I think I may have just run out of packing materials and thought why not!

  6. There’s no denying that moving is stressful. Good luck with your packing!

  7. Moving can be so stressful! The trick you mentioned about clothing is a great idea! And it is way more eco-friendly than using all that packing paper!

    • I think I came up with it after I’d run out of packing paper and just didn’t want to run to the store! And, yes, it’s been very stressful! We are downsizing by half so figuring out what to keep, who will take what, and where to get rid of things is making it worse!

  8. Having just moved last September, I remember this “adventure” all too well! And while I didn’t do it last time, in a previous move, I wrapped breakables in quilt fabric. I get it!

    Michelle
    https://mybijoulifeonline.com,

    • Ugh…we spent the day packing up part of the basement. I had to pack up so many books from my classroom…tears were shed. I’m donating them to new teachers at my DIL’s school, but it’s still hard to finally say goodbye to a huge part of your life. Since we’re only moving a few miles, I’m hoping not to lose my stuff…so glad yours finally showed up!

  9. Oh, girl, I don’t envy you this moving at all. I know my day is coming. But I will put it off as long as I can. If need be, we could live on our first floor and just ignore our second story all together. For now, though, we stumble up the stairs to our bedroom and down again in the morning and then avoid going up there again until nightfall.

I am particular about packing, too. I want to open boxes and have similar things packed in them. The packers we had in the Army just grabbed things and stuff them in boxes. One box might contain pots and pans and Christmas decorations and linens. So I would unpack and have to carry things all over the place to put them up.

Hope the stars align and all goes well and perfectly timed with your building and your move.

    • I started packing closets today. Mike just sat and stared as I kept pulling things out!!! We have two rooms we could convert to bedrooms, but they would always look like two rooms we converted to bedrooms. The problem is no full bath on the first floor. And, with Mike being such a stumble bum, we just can’t take the chance of him falling down the stairs and breaking a third ankle (cuz if anyone could do it, it would be him)!

We did contract with movers yesterday, but we are still packing everything. I’m just crossing my fingers and toes that everything comes together! Thanks, my friend!!!
