October 10 on the 10th: Preview

Did you ever wonder why October wouldn’t be the eighth month? I mean octo- means eight, right? Just like our friend, September, October once had a different spot in the calendar. The Roman calendar didn’t include January and February. Once they were added, October became the tenth month, but no one bothered to change the name. October’s full moon is the Hunter’s Moon. Many full moons’ names are related to folklore, but October’s as well as September’s is related to the autumnal equinox. The Hunter’s Moon may not even fall in October, though it does this year. It is the first full moon after the Harvest Moon in September. Why Hunter’s Moon? Early hunters knew animals had been fattening themselves in preparation for the winter months so it made sense to hunt them then. This full moon is also sometimes called the Blood Moon because of the blood shed by those same hunted animals. I guess October is just naturally gory! Oh, and, don’t forget! There will be a link party on the 10th!
