Songful Style: “Love at First Sight”

“Love at First Sight”

Oh, Gurlz! This was a tough one! Welcome to the last Monday in February and another edition of Songful Style. Suzy and Shelbee decided to riff (see what I did there) on Style Imitating Art only with music! Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Michelle of Funky Fashion Style, and I make up the bloggers in this group. You can find all of us on our blogs and Instagram.  Our ensembles (pun intended) may be inspired by the lyrics of a song, the artwork of the album cover, maybe the MTV video, or even a memory the song evokes. This month’s selection comes from Suzy who lives in Portugal but picked a singer from Australia! Her choice is, of course, “Love at First Sight.” Last month, Michelle chose “Tell Me Baby.” You can see my look here. Oh, and there’s a link party, too!

The artist…

Before there was a certain model and makeup guru, there was Kylie Minogue, and she has the rights to the name! Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1968, Kylie Minogue has made a huge impact on the music scene. Of English and Welsh heritage, Minogue’s parents moved to Australia aboard the Fairsea in 1958. Another family, the Gibbs (you know…Maurice, Barry, and Robin), were also on board! It seems the first ten years of her life were fairly normal. Both Kylie and her sister, Dannii, took singing and dancing classes even though the family frequently moved. Kylie received a Higher School Certificate but struggled with making friends. She described herself as being “quite modest” and having “average intelligence.” (source)

A little more…

Kylie began her career, however, as an actress in several television shows. She had a small part in “The Henderson Kids.” Minogue’s role was written out of the show because of her frequent tears. This move, however, enabled her to begin to focus on music. Eventually, Kylie was cast in “Neighbors,” an Australian soap opera. Her character, Charlene, became involved with Scott and married him in a wedding episode in 1987 which garnered an audience of 20 million viewers. In comparison, 30 million people tuned in to watch Luke and Laura get married on “General Hospital” in 1981. I missed it. I was shopping (imagine that) with a couple of friends and couldn’t convince them to find a store with a television in it!

Still more…

In 1987, Kylie began recording music. Her first single, Locomotion, was released in 1987 and became a huge best seller in Australia. The following year, her debut album, Kylie, appeared. Later that same year, she left “Neighbors” to focus on creating music though she returned in 2022 as Charlene for the series finale. Several albums followed including Fever in 2001. This is the album from which “Love at First Sight” comes. For the sake of brevity (I know…hahaha), I am not including all of the musical history for Kylie Minogue. Throughout her career, Minogue has been compared (and not always favorably) with Madonna. Both women have had long careers, some ups and downs, as well as being the only recording artists to reach the top position of the United Kingdom Albums Chart in each of the decades from the 1980s to the 2010s. In addition, both women have performed “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend!” With Disco reaching number one on the same chart in 2020, Minogue is the first female artist to do so in five decades from the 1980s to the 2020s! The winner of many awards, Kylie Minogue is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) as well as a Chevalier de Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. You can read so much more about Kylie Minogue here.

The song…

Thought that I was going crazy
Just having one of those days yeah
Didn't know what to do
Then there was you

And everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out and filled up the sky
The music you were playing really blew my mind
It was love at first sight

'Cause, baby, when I heard you
For the first time, I knew
We were meant to be as one

Was tired of running out of luck
Thinking 'bout giving up yeah
Didn't know what to do
Then there was you

And everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out and filled up the sky
The music you were playing really blew my mind
It was love at first sight

'Cause, baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one
(Meant to be as one)
'Cause, baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one

Everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out and filled up the sky
The music you were playing really blew my mind
It was love at first sight
Love at first sight, love at first sight
Love, ooh, it was love, it was love at first sight

'Cause, baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one
(Meant to be as one)
'Cause, baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one

It was love, it was love, it was love, it was love
Ooh, it was love, it was love, it was love, it was love
Ooh, it was love, it was love, it was love, it was love

What does it mean…

Sometimes, a rose is just a rose. This is a love song, pure and simple. Imagine, you’re walking down the street, having a crappy day, week, month, or year. All of a sudden, you hear someone making the most perfect music. And, BAM! You are in love! Is this song deep? Nope! Sometimes, love happens just that fast, and that’s a good thing!

The video…

This is such a fun video! One of the first things to catch my eye was her eyeshadow! I love that slash of turquoise across her lid! Of course, there’s also the straps of her undies above the waistband of her pants! And, let’s talk about those pants…are they not completely awesome! Oh, to be able to wear something like that! This video is so graphic…as in actual graphics. That beginning with the clouds overlaid with the obviously CAD graphics which then spread to create the staircase Kylie descends…such a blast! Those ketchup and mustard dancers remind me so much of Devo! And, let’s talk about those purple almost tutus!!! Like I said…what fun!

Interesting covers…

This is a rather sweet cover with Kylie actually in the BBC radio station. You can see the emotions in her face as he sings. This woman has a wonderful voice and is actually singing as part of her graduation recital. This particular cover gives me a bit of a country vibe. This cover is a bit ethereal, and I think Kylie would probably really enjoy the techno aspects of it.

My interpretation…

I know you are all sitting there wondering what in the world my interpretation has to do with this song, let alone the video! There’s a story…isn’t there always? Many, many, many years ago, I was a young girl of 13 or 14. I lived in this wonderful neighborhood (you can read more here and here). My best friend lived three houses down. If I looked out my bedroom window, I could see her front yard. She had three big brothers, one of whom was the same age as my older sister.

A little more more…

Every day, after dinner, Mom would go to the same neighbor’s house…she was besties with my bestie’s mom…and have a cup of tea. During the summer, she might even go there during the day. Some times, I would go with her. Other times, I’d be there because my bestie was there, right? Anyway, it just so happened, her youngest brother (my sister’s age…ya following me) had a best buddy. They often worked on their cars in the front yard. The best buddy had a yellow 1965 GTO. And, I might just have watched them working on their cars out my bedroom window! If I got really lucky, I’d be visiting with my friend, and they would come in the house!

This is my “nope, I wasn’t peeking” face!

Even more…

When I was a little older, I began dating another guy in our neighborhood, but I still had this crush on that car guy. Fast forward a bit…other guy is now out of the picture. I happened to mention to the middle brother I thought car guy was kinda cute, and I’d like to date him. Everything was hahaha! No one took me seriously, especially car guy when he found out. On May 19, 1973, car guy was Best Man at his friend’s wedding (my bestie’s youngest brother). We went to the reception; car guy sees me; car guy falls in love at first sight! We started dating the next weekend and have been together ever since! My look, therefore, is what I would have been wearing on one of those days I’d been stalking watching him through my bedroom window…a plaid shirt, cut offs, and hoops in my ears. And, that, my friends, is my interpretation for this song!

Now, that is an ornery grin!

The Lewk!

I wasn’t wearing Stan Smith Adidas back in 1973. In fact, I probably wasn’t wearing sneakers at all back then. My go to shoes then were clogs, but, if it was warm, I was barefoot. It is not warm enough to go barefoot right now, and I haven’t had a pedicure in months! I would have been wearing gold hoops rather than silver ones. But, that would have been the extent of my accessories.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I have to admit, when Suzy picked this song, I had never heard of it. I’d heard of Kylie Minogue through another song, “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” But, beyond that, I really didn’t know much other than she battled and beat breast cancer and was a pop star. It seems, though, Kylie Minogue is a very intelligent woman who has managed to change with the times and continues to produce music. Kudos to her! So, can we talk? Are you a fan of this Australian superstar? How would you compare her to Madonna (since everyone else does)? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond as soon as possible.

  1. Kylie also wrote Love at First Sight on her 1988 album called Kylie. Her and Madonna in my opinion are great artists individually. This was a great post have a fabulous start to your week. https://www.bauchlefashion.com

    • Thanks so much, Heather. I think it’s unfortunate they are compared because they are so dissimilar in their music. Have a wonderful week!

  2. Love your story. It could be in a soap series, lol. And such a good interpretation of that time. And a very lovely song, not my favourite of Kylie Minogue though, but a fantastic artist!

    • Thanks, Nancy! I was really stumped on what to wear and then thought to do this! I’m betting you’ve seen her in concert!

  3. Marsha, you and your car guy have such a wonderful “cute meet” story. And you might have had to wait a bit of time for him to realize what a catch you were but in my case, I had to wait nearly 10 years. I think you did a wonderful job spinning the inspiration choice into a fabulous look.

  4. What an adorable meet-cute! I love hearing the story behind your outfit. While I definitely remember listening to and singing along with Locomotion I don’t think I never knew the name of the artist that sang it or any of her other works either.

    • Thanks, Joanne! I can’t believe how many years ago that was yet I remember it like yesterday! I knew of Kylie Minogue but not for Locomotion.

  5. Awwww, the best kind of love story. How sweet is that??
And those white sneakers. I just picked up a pair at Goodwill this weekend.
    XOXO

    • Thanks, Jodie! The funny thing is my dad told my mom she’d have to go out on a date with us if he asked me! She didn’t! But, Mike and my dad became friends before he died the following year. I am trying to make friends with these sneakers. I honestly am!

  6. Marsha, I absolutely LOVE this!! And I love your love story. Michael and I had similar beginnings. I didn’t even think to choose an outfit based on what I would have worn back then, but it’s a brilliant interpretation!!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Thanks so much, Suzy! I really wish I had a pair of pants like hers, though! They were so cool! Oh, you will have to tell that story sometime! I’d love to hear it!

  7. I did not know Kylie’s history but remember she and I are the same age, I’ve always enjoyed her music and this was such a fun read! This casual look is so good on you Marsha!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks so much, Kellyann! I really am more casual than glamorous, but I love to dress up! What can I say? I really wasn’t that familiar with her music so it was fun to watch several of her videos!

  8. Thanks for sharing all the background about Kylie! I love her eyeshadow too. It’s a nice change to see you in a casual look on your blog. I adore the sneakers!

    • Thanks, Kathrine! If you lived close to me, this is pretty much what you’d see on a daily basis! I’m not always glamorous and fashionable…hahaha! The first thing I noticed was her eyeshadow and meant to do something like that. But, I already had my makeup on when I remembered!

  10. FUN! FUN! FUN! Marsha, I loved reading this and my hormones are all menopausy and stuff so I am over here crying on my keyboard. I love that Tom Walker cover so much and I love the story behind your outfit even more! What a beautiful love story and a super adorable outfit.

I finally finished my post…a day late but still fun!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks so much, Shelbee! I was just really struggling with what to do with this song, and then I thought I’d tell about Nigel’s experience with “Love at First Sight!” I think that Tom Walker cover was really cool especially when I finally realized she was sitting there listening to him!

Hey, better late than never! And, you had an excuse!

  11. Aw, this was such a great story behind your interpretation. So amusing how Car Guy was like haha, then “whoa!” The white sneakers are a perfect mid-80s-but-popular-again touch!

    • Thanks so much, Sally…that’s exactly how it was! He saw me on Saturday and called the next week for a date! I am trying to like these sneakers, but they just need to be a little more lived in!

  12. I love your “car guy” story. How fantastic! So sweet how you and Nigel got together. I didn’t know Kylie Minogue at all before Suzy picked this song. The 80s were a lost decade for me music wise. I loved in rural Kansas and every radio station played country. Blech. (I tried to like it, but it didn’t happen.) So I appreciate the background on her. Thank you.

    Michelle
    https://funkyfashionstyle.com

    • Thanks, Michelle! He still thinks it’s funny how I would watch them! But, I got the last laugh! Oh, you poor thing…I am not a big fan of country music either with the exception of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and the other “outlaws.” I just barely knew of Kylie Minogue. I don’t think she made it big here in the states.

  13. What a fun story! I love hearing how you interpreted this song into your outfit. I figured it was going to be something about the gray square graphics in the video and your plaid button up, but you kept me guessing!

    • Thanks, Laura! I’m glad you liked it. I was last minute on this one (well, I almost always am on all of them), but this idea came to me in the middle of the night!
