What’s Up, Buttercup?

If one is good…

Then, two might be better, right? I was returning some things at the Fashion Mall. That’s really its name. I giggle about it because it’s a more upscale mall than others in the area. You would think they would have come up with a better name. But, I digress. I happened to bop into the J Jill store just to check out a couple of things I’d seen in a recent catalog. I had no intentions of buying another dress…none whatsoever! In fact, I already own this dress in rust. Interestingly, I featured it in a post almost exactly one year ago!

A little more…

But, once I tried it on in the store, I was a goner. I don’t usually buy yellow. In fact, if I’d known the color was called custard/dark custard, I might have thought twice. No, I wouldn’t have, but that’s a rather icky name, isn’t it? The dress is also available in blue, and I considered it for a little minute. But, I have blue dresses, and there was just something so bright and springy about this color which I’m hereby dubbing buttercup! I love the weight of the linen. It’s a bit on the heavier side. It will also wrinkle, but I really don’t care about that. Linen wrinkles. If you don’t like that, you must make friends with your iron! I obviously love this dress because we took so many photos.

Just a tad more…

One of the reasons I love to shop at the J Jill store in Indianapolis is the ladies at the store. They are phenomenal! When I walk in, I know exactly how Norm felt on “Cheers!” I’m always greeted with a smile and a “How are you?” I also know they won’t steer me wrong when I try things on. I almost always go into the fitting rooms with an armload of clothing in all colors and styles. I can depend upon them to give me honest feedback. Suzie, my color expert, always tells me if something is just not for me. She then finds something that is! I value the relationships I’ve built with these wonderful women! They are the best!

The Lewk!

It’s very rare that I have all new accessories, but this is one of those rare times! Well, the large coiled bracelet has been on the blog before (here). All of the jewelry (except for the necklace extender…and who knows where I got that) is from World Finds. I bought the large coiled bracelet as well as the necklace from Zia Stella. There is a sale going on there right now so I’d head over if you like what you see here! The small single bracelet with the gold paillettes, the small coil bracelet, and the slide bracelet came directly from the World Finds site. Check out those earrings! They are on the lower left and are called linear arc earrings. I thought they were just the coolest thing ever! I did include the necklace extender just so I could remember to tell you I used it in order to make the necklace longer and hang outside my dress. The wedges are Birkenstocks! I’m still trying to decide if they’re the right size. These are my first Birks. They’re very comfortable, but they seem long. If you’re a Birkenstock connoisseur, please let me know what you think. Is it good to have them a bit long?

Wrap it up, Marsha!

Another short post! It’s not like I have this grand exciting life where I’m busy every minute of the day! It’s more that I have this small life where I putter around until the last minute! Today (actually yesterday) included a meeting at church, baking cookies for the Lenten supper, delivering said cookies, and a photo shoot! You thought I was kidding when I said I was a procrastinator! So, can we talk? Would you call this color custard or buttercup? Are you sometimes turned off by a color description when you can’t see it in person? Have you ever bought the same thing with a year or so in between? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond as soon as possible!

  1. I would call the color of your dress buttercup as well, Marsha. I’m often amused by the descriptive names retailers give their items. As for colors I don’t like, I’m finding that I don’t like myself in pastels now that my hair is a lighter tone. Besides that, I also avoid tones that are close to the color of my skin. Even in shoes and purses, I don’t like pinky-nudes. And don’t even get me started with the naked-dressing trend that’s so hot right now.

    • Thanks, Rena! It is fun to see the different names retailers come up with. That might be a fun job to have!As much as I love a dusky pink color, I just can’t wear it next to my face because my neck completely disappears. I’m not even a fan of a nude lip! Naked dressing? I haven’t heard of that…I’ll have to do some digging!

  2. Oh what a gorgeous color! I’m currently wearing a lot of yellow after avoiding it for years. I’d call this color primrose, although Kettlewell have a similar one they call Lemonade!

    • Isn’t it funny how things change? I know you have changed based on your color analysis. I think I’ve changed a bit as my hair and coloring have changed. Some of it is also I’m more willing to try other colors than I used to be. The primroses I see here are all different colors. I do wonder if they are a different flower altogether.

      Thanks, Gail, for visiting!

  3. That is one lovely dress and the colour is fantabulous on you. It’s a very subtle yellow and yes, I think it’s a buttercup yellow but like Gail above I think it could be nearer a primrose!. Suits you totally so do get some more items in that colour – just beautiful.

But oh. my. word. you’re wearing sandals – at the moment I wouldn’t put a foot outside without my thick socks and long fur-lined boots! It’s not the cold so much (well it is of course, ) but it’s the constant rain. Our toes won’t appear for many months yet!!!!

    • Thank you so much, Penny! I should have known you would like this dress! Primroses here come in a variety of colors…maybe they’re a different flower altogether?

Well, I did go back inside and pop on my socks and a sweatshirt! It’s been warmer here but very wet. You’d feel right at home!

  4. I would consider that more of a buttercup color too; but whatever it’s called it does look fabulous on you!

    • Thank you so much, Joanne! I was expecting to see the color name as buttercup…certainly not custard!

  5. It’s such a soft colour. It immediately reminds me of Easter, start of the spring, sun, joy! I never liked orange and yellow that much but I learned to appreciate them!

    • Thanks, Nancy! I’m not a fan of orange either, but I haven’t tried it lately. Easter isn’t that far away at this point, right?

  6. This outfit screams Spring. I love it! It’s so happy – no matter what color you call it. (I do prefer buttercup.) And your jewelry is so bright and cheerful. I had to laugh about how going to J Jill is the same for you as Norm going to “Cheers.”

    • Thanks, Michelle! The only thing they don’t do is slide a beer to me! Lately, they’ve been pairing with some of the other stores in the mall to offer little canapes or samples. The sales associates make sure I have one or the other! Isn’t this jewelry fun?

  7. I’m so glad you bought the dress Marsha (and especially not depending on the name of the color…the name is something that just doesn’t matter, haha). But I love this kind of dress because you can wear it like a duster too. SO versatile,
    XOXO

    • Thanks, Jodie! I actually didn’t know the name until I wrote the post. I was really expecting to see it listed as buttercup…certainly not custard! And, I will definitely wear it as a duster!

  8. That dress is a beautiful spring color (I can rally behind buttercup a lot better than custard), and I LOVE it styled with this colorful jewelry! I agree with Jodie that it would make a wonderful duster, too.

    • Thanks, Sally! I love wearing my shirt dresses as dusters…more bang for the buck! I almost always think of you whenever I wear a bracelet!

  9. Oh, what a lovely outfit! You look amazing Marsha 🙂

  10. This really is such a great dress Marsha! It looks like it would be so comfortable – especially as the weather heats up.
I remember when you told me about the Fashion Mall – I didn’t realize it was the name – ha!! So funny!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! It is really the perfect dress! I can wear it closed as a dress or open as a duster! I was really surprised to see how good it looked on me in the pictures as I don’t wear yellow very often!

I always think of you when I think or write Fashion Mall!

  11. That is such an interesting tone of yellow. It screams spring to me and looks like such a fun hue to wear this season. I hope you are having the best weekend my friend. https://www.bauchlefashion.com/2023/03/spring-into-fashion-5-fashion-trends-to.html

  12. What a stunning color on you Marsha! This is the perfect dress for the first week of spring. Love the accessories you paired with it. Such a nice contrast!

    https://www.kathrineeldridge.com

    • Thanks so much, Kathrine! I was really surprised at how well this color played with my complexion and hair!

  13. It’s a good thing you didn’t see the name of the color first! It’s such a gorgeous shade on you and your skin is just glowing!

    • Thanks so much, Laura! I don’t think I would have let the name stop me, but I was a little surprised by the name!

  14. This color is so perfect for Spring! It looks fabulous. I am one of those people who can not stand the wrinkles linen gets when you sit down. Drives me crazy. However I love the natural feel of linen. I have linen curtains and on chairs but will not wear. So bright and cheerful and you make it look so effortless. I would be walking around with an iron!
Love all your new accessories too! I really want those sandals and that necklace is so colorful and fun. Have a lovely weekend.-Meagan

    • Thanks so much, Meagan! I’m chuckling because I don’t think I would ever put linen on a chair! My dog would ruin it for sure! I have to tell you these sandals are so comfortable! I was surprised because I’ve never found Birks to be comfy!

  15. What a great dress, Marsha! This color is gorgeous on you. I will call it butter-custard! I absolutely love that necklace! It reminds me of the one I got at April Cornell in Burlington. Isn’t it so nice to shop in places that make you feel special? I have a similar relationship with the ladies in my local Torrid. Your Birkenstocks are super cute! I only have the traditional flat ones which are in my regular shoe size. I find them maybe a little wide but not too long. I usually wear socks with mine though! Fun post, my friend!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! It’s funny because I’m not usually a fan of yellow, but I really like this dress. These Birkenstocks are really comfortable because my goofy foot likes wedges better than flats. I bet your friends at Torrid greet you with huge smiles!!
