White After Labor Day…Oh, My!

Honestly, I don’t know where this face comes from!

What would Mother say…

I’m not sure about your mom, but I’m pretty sure my mom would be OK with wearing white after Labor Day these days. She didn’t wear lots of white as it was. Whenever I think of Mom and white, I always remember a family vacation when she’d bought a brand new pair of white pants. We were at some restaurant, and my little brother wanted some ketchup. You know exactly where this is going, right? He shook that bottle, pounded on the bottom as one does, and off came the lid! Mom had ketchup all over those brand new, bright white pants! Let’s just say she was more than a little unhappy.

Hmmm…

It appears I wrote a post about wearing white after Labor Day. You can find it here. It is one of my first few posts so it’s not the polished creation you’re now reading…hahaha!!! In that, I go on and on and on about not wearing white pants because my mom said we shouldn’t. I also give a brief history of why wearing white after Labor Day became a thing. You might want to visit it just for that. In my defense, I was talking, specifically, about wearing white pants.

History says…

Now, one of the reasons people quit wearing white back in the day was because Labor Day marked the end of the summer season. And, the rich people, who had the money for multiple colors and outfits, decided that was when summer whites should be put away until the next year. Another reason put forth is that old money wanted to keep new money in its place and developed all these sartorial rules. Well, I’m neither old or new money so I shall do as I like!

My outfit…

I bought this white linen dress at J Jill weeks ago and completely forgot I had it. When I was scavenging in my closet for something white to write about, I found it! I love the embroidery around the bottom of it. I’m here to tell you…if you embroider it…you know the rest! It doesn’t sound quite right if I finish the sentence!! I have two problems with this dress. I wonder if you can guess what they are. Shall I make you wait? Or, should I just tell you? Well, making you wait only means you’d have to read on so I’ll tell you. The dress has no pockets! What? J Jill does pockets in dresses so well. I had no place to stick my hands so I’m posing even more awkwardly than usual! And, it has a lining which seems to have a mind of its own at times. As most of you know, I’m not really a fan of vee necks on me. I added this scarf/shawl from Gudrun Sjödén to add some color and to fill in my decolletage.

Check out that embroidery!

The Lewk!

These sandals have appeared on the blog several times. When I ordered them, I had no idea how well they would work with my wardrobe. I know I complained loud and vociferously about the shipping and customer service, but these sandals are so daggone comfortable. I am truly tempted to buy another pair knowing I won’t have them until next year. All of the jewelry is from Lagos and has been collected over many years (earrings, bracelet, cuff, and station bracelet).

Wrap it up, Marsha!

Well, that was rather a long winded way to say, “Wear what you like as long as you like it!” Honestly, I used to be rather judgy when it came to what people wore. Even more honestly, I still am to a degree! But, I do believe we should all wear what we want as long as it’s socially appropriate. And, if you don’t want to wear white after Labor Day, don’t wear it. No judgement here, my friends! I don’t wear too much white anyway as we have atrocious water, and everything comes out a nasty shade of grey! So, can we talk? Do you wear white after Labor Day? Are there colors you find specific to a certain time of year and only wear them then? Or, are you an equal opportunity color wearer? Please leave me a comment, and we can talk! I promise I do respond within a few days.

I’m a goof…

Some of you may have noticed photos missing from certain posts. I’d received an email from my web host saying I was one of only 10% of people who used lots of space. So, I deleted some photos not knowing that would also delete them from my posts! Duh! I truly am a goof, and I’m probably pretty gullible. I find it highly unlikely I’m part of the 10% using too much space. But, I coughed up the extra dough to make it work.

Thank you!

I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for reading, commenting, subscribing or emailing! It truly means so much to me! If you’d like to follow me on Instagram, you can find me here.

  1. You always have such lovely sandals – they’re gorgeous. No, never understood the not wearing white. But white is challenging when it comes to keeping it pristine. Consequently I like white tops but white jeans? No thanks!

That dress is lovely and floaty and must be great in the hot weather. But no pockets….! Have a good rest of the week 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Penny! I cannot believe how comfortable these sandals are. They support my foot so well. Yes, this dress would be so good with pockets. I wonder if it was just too difficult with the lining. And, I am with you as far as white jeans and pants. I have several white tops and wear them any time I want. But, white jeans are just too much bother!

  2. I don’t wear much white in general but I will wear it after labor day without giving it much thought as long as it’s weather appropriate it’s fine by me.

    • I have lots of white tees that I wear until I ruin them with stains, wash them in our nasty water, or poke holes in them. I think weather appropriate is a smart way to do it!

      Thanks, Joanne!

  3. I used to NEVER break the white rule…like, up until a few years ago “used to.” But my white shorts and jeans are my favorite bottoms so I have taken it upon myself to extend the deadline to the official end of summer. Then generally, and with a heavy heart, I will pack them all away until late spring.

I think you need to break Instagram with a new version of “what color is this dress?” I had to go back to reread the paragraph where you said it was white…because I thought it was lavender or blue, haha. Whatever color it is, it’s very cute and looks great on you!

    • Thanks, Em! I took your advice and posted on Instagram…alas and alack…I have not broken the ‘Gram yet!

Honestly, I don’t have that many pairs of white jeans or shorts so it’s never been a big deal for me. I’m just too messy! I hope the house is coming along well!

  4. I usually don’t wear white at all, but if I did, I would wear it whenever I wanted. Lol. Hmm. I don’t think I subscribe to any sort of fashion rules. I am sure I am breaking them all the time without even knowing!

    • Hahaha!!! I know I break them a lot because I’ll read on another person’s blog about this rule or that one, and I’ve never even heard of the rule! I have lots of white tees that I wear year round until I ruin them by staining them with spaghetti sauce!

      Thanks, Erin!

  5. I place wearing clothing when you like without worrying about what season it should be limited to in the “smart money” category. Summer weather continues, so summer clothing certainly can continue as well!

    • Thanks, Sally! That’s a very wise way of thinking. I really don’t pigeon hole my clothing too much, but I probably wouldn’t wear white linen pants in the winter when it’s so sloppy outside!

  6. I wear white year round and love your dress Marsha! You styled it perfectly for fall with the darker colors! Your sandals are fabulous!

    Jill – Doused in Pink

    • Thank you, Jill! I tend to wear whatever color I have that works! I don’t know that I would wear white linen pants in winter given how sloppy it can get, though! And, thank you so much for the compliments…they mean a lot coming from you!

  7. Marsha, it is a beautiful dress! The embroidery is gorgeous. And these sandals and scarf are perfect for adding color to the white dress. When it comes to fashion, you know I make my own rules! And sometimes I don’t even follow those rules. Haha. Fun post!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I don’t know that I have any rules anymore, either. But, as soon as I say that, I’ll come up with some!

Have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

  8. I would definitely want pockets in my dress too. I love dresses with pockets. I probably shouldn’t have them because then I always put too much in them and they bulge out but I want them anyhow.

    • I don’t put as much in my pockets as I did when I was teaching. But, it just feels so weird not to have pockets when almost everything I own has them! And, they hold my hands so well!

      Thanks, Lisa!

  9. That white dress is so pretty! I absolutely love the embroidery and your colorful accessories!

    • Thank you, Laura! I just love embroidery! I thought the colors of the shoes and scarf went well together!

  10. I just posted a pic on IG of me in a white dress (I wore that outfit a couple Sundays ago. It is one of the dresses that stays out in my closet year round because I like to add a topper of some sort to it in the fall. I do wear my white jeans more than it in the fall as I love the contrast it makes with color and even neutrals.

    • I wear white tees all year round, but that’s about it. As much as I love linen, it’s just not warm enough for the weather here in late fall and winter. I’m not even sure I have any white jeans right now!

      Thanks, Mireille!

  11. White is lovely to wear whenever you feel like it – here in Aus we don’t seem to have those delineations as our seasons are all messed up and what day is Labor day anyway? You look great!

    • Thanks, Debbie! Our Labor Day is the first Monday in September. But, our summer here in central Indiana lasts much longer than that these days. I wear white when I want. This dress, though, I won’t probably wear again until spring as it’s linen. I would get way too cold!

  12. You rule breaker! I’m glad you explained the reason for the rule. We don’t have Labor Day here and I wear white and cream all year-long, as my neutrals. Thanks for linking

    • Hahaha!!! I doubt anyone notices when I break rules, though. But, I do remember it being a real thing here in the States for a long time. I think most people have thrown that particular rule out along with not wearing navy and black together!

      Thanks, Gail!
