Ok, so update on Nigel…we’ve got a surgery date…next Monday! I’m hoping that when I post later next week, I’ll be telling you all about how he’s walking! We do know he won’t be walking normally for months simply because his muscles have atrophied in his right leg. But, I have faith we are finally coming to the end of this saga! You, however, came for the fun, right? My ten favorite cars are in no particular order except for number one!

Without further ado…

1999 Saab 9-3 This was my first real car. I picked it out. I negotiated the deal. I signed the loan (and it was a huge one). I absolutely adored this car. It was black and had grey leather seats. This car had a turbo engine in it. When you stomped on it, ya’ll, it could move! Not that I ever did that, of course! One of the fun details about these funny looking (to some, not me) cars was that the ignition was in the console, right there in the middle of the car by the gear shift. That’s because Saab cars were made by the same company that makes airplanes. Apparently, that’s where you’d put the key in an airplane. Wait, do airplanes have keys?

Mine looked just like this!

1974 Ford Pinto Nigel had a couple of cool cars, and then he met me! I coerced persuaded him we needed this cute little orange Pinto. Of course, he succumbed to my whining charms and bought it. It was a four speed. Before he bought it, he said I’d need to learn how to drive a four on the floor. So, we took it for a test drive. This was back in the days when the salesmen knew and trusted you and let you take the car without them. We went on a back road (those were easy to find in my hometown), and Nigel showed me what to do. I am proud to tell you I only killed it once or twice before I was driving that cute little pony like a pro. I can also drive three on the tree!

1963 Split Window Coupe Corvette I mean, c’mon, doesn’t everyone want one of these? Can’t you imagine driving down the street with the Beatles playing “I Want to Hold Your Hand?” I would take this one, but I’d prefer the baby blue color!

2027 Corvette Just like potato chips, you can’t have just one! I really like the sleek lines of the new Corvettes. Nigel prefers some other body style. I know if he had his druthers, he’d buy one. But, the last surgeon told him they would be terrible for him to sit in and then try to get out of! I just think they’re cool!

1965 Pontiac GTO This was the car that started it all! Nigel’s car looked exactly like this one (minus the blonde). I would watch him working on it out my bedroom window. I never got to ride in it because he sold it in order to buy a 1969 Ford Fairlane! Just google that and wonder at how a man’s mind works! How could you give up this beautiful piece of machinery for a car like that?

1976 Mercedes 450SL – When Nigel and I got married, I wanted one of these so badly! I told him I wanted one for our 25th anniversary. That came and went 25 years ago! I would still take one, though!

Volkswagen Bus I really don’t care what year the “bus” would be as long as it was in pristine condition and ran like a gazelle. I have always wanted one just because I think they’re super groovy! I probably would have it wrapped in vinyl…big colorful flowers! I’d even hang that fringe with balls at the windows.

2009 Saturn Sky – I actually had this car! Nigel bought it for me for Christmas. That had to be the biggest surprise I’ve ever received. I came home after school, and the garage door wouldn’t go up. Nigel was at the front door, motioning me to come in. I was a little upset (read really mad) that he didn’t open the door. He said to come on in. He led me over to the garage door (the one connecting the house to the garage) and opened it. There it was! I was absolutely shocked. This was the last year they produced this car. We had actually seen it on the car lot a week or two before. I said something about someone was lucky to get that car! And, she was!

Notice the Marilyn Monroe posters on the walls…still have them!

2026 Audi RS 7 – I have always liked Audis, and this would be my preference if I were buying one today.

Duesenberg Model J – Now, being a lifelong Hoosier, I had to include an Indiana made car. Nigel and I lived about 45 minutes from the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana. One year, we rode our motorcycle to the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival in Auburn held on Labor Day weekend. Boy howdy! They have a parade of these beautiful classic cars, and that’s when I fell in love with this big old grande dame of automobiles. We also visited the museum several times over the years. If I had a spare couple of million dollars, I would buy one. Unlike Nigel, I would drive that baby all over the place…well, maybe not in downtown Indianapolis. Nigel thinks, if you spend that much money, you should park it and just admire it. Nope, no way, not a chance! If I buy something as wonderful as a Duesenberg, I’m gonna drive it! Of course, I’d also spend a small fortune on upkeep and gas! But, wouldn’t it be worth it? Just look at this beauty!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I know many of you aren’t really all that interested in cars. But, I live in Central Indiana. We can hear the NHRA drag races going on over Labor Day. We can also hear the Indy 500 if the wind is just right. And, I just happened to marry a gear head. Cars sorta became a thing for me over the years. So, can we talk? Are you a car person, a truck person, or an SUV person? What is your favorite car you’ve ever owned or wish you owned? Which of mine would be an absolute no for you? Please leave a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

  1. It’s rare that I say “oh, what a beautiful car”. Today all cars look the same to me which could well have to do with all that black, blue and grey tones. I already said that I always loved the VW Beetle Convertible, but I never had one.
From your list I like the Mercedes (living not far from them, I’m legally bound to), of course the VW bus (sat in one of those a lot), and the Duesenberg.

    • Thanks, Cat! I have noticed the lack of fun colors these days. I remember going with my grandfather to order a new car. The salesman presented him with a folder that had so many different colors on it. I really like the Duesenberg, but I couldn’t afford the gas nor the upkeep let alone buying the car itself!

  2. What a lovely range of cars Marsha. I think most of us have dreamed about owning a sporty little number. There used to be one called a TR7 when I was growing up that was all the rage. But that was way before I learned to drive. Now I like small compact cars that are easy to park, where I can see the front and back from the drivers seat and that are just large enough to pack in the grocery shopping! Although I have always fancied one of those tiny Smart Cars that are so small making parallel parking unnecessary as you can drive them face-on into a space. The downside is there is hardly any room inside!

    • Thanks, Rosie! Oh, that’s the one I was trying to think of!!! I loved those, too. I remember seeing a Smart Car in London for the first time and thinking they were so fun! You still see a few of them around here. Believe it or not, I drive a small car, too. I have been driving Mike’s SUV because that’s the car he can get in easier than in my little Honda Civic. I love it and will have it for many years, I hope.

  3. Oh gosh, those Corvette’s!! I’ve always loved those. And the Pontiac. I love big cars.

    • Thanks, Nancy! You would look quite smashing in a Corvette! I am a little car person, really. I currently drive a Honda Civic.

  4. I like the Saab, the newer model ‘vette, and the Audi but the rest would probably get a pass from me. I think my favorite car I’ve owned is probably the one I have now. My blackout Blazer feels both sporty and practical. It definitely has some get up go to it and doesn’t like to run at low speeds plus it’s got the sun roof and some fun curves (why they still call it a blazer and an SUV is beyond me as it looks nothing like the old blazers!).

    • Thanks, Joanne! I have seen the new Blazers and, at first, couldn’t believe they were Blazers. I loved that Saab, but Mike did not!

  5. What a fun post today, Marsha! I swear, you win the prize for featuring the most varied and interesting topics of any blogger I follow!. Your automobile choices are fantastic! My aunt and uncle (who had 10 children) always had a VW Bus which I thought was so fun. Our next door neighbor has a son who drives a brand-new Corvette and it truly is a sight to behold. Another neighbor owns a late model Corvette, Malibu and Camaro, and an older Firebird (not to mention his two Harley-Davidson bikes). What a collection. About 10 years ago I finally bought the car of my dreams — a Subaru. It is the best car I have ever driven because it feels as if it were custom-made just for me.

    • Thanks, Beth! You have made my day! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. Gracious! They would need a VW bus, wouldn’t they? Your neighbors have wonderful taste in cars! We had a Harley up until 2016 when Mike broke his arm and couldn’t quite handle the weight of it. My brother drives Subarus and loves them!

  6. I married a gear head too, Marsha! You have some great cars in your line-up! That last one being especially well…special lol! What a grand old car she is! We still own Michael’s late father’s white Toyota MR2. He bought it new in 1991 (the same year Michael and I actually met and got together!) and kept it until he passed away in 2001 (just days before 9/11). His wife kept it and drove it sometimes until her death in 2007 and then it passed to us. We used it for a while but then it just sat in garage gathering dust for years until this year when he started working on it to get it up and running again. It’s almost ready! I’m excited to drive it again after all these years!
    Great post, Marsha!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Thanks, Suzy! Isn’t that Duesenberg a doozy? They are even more gorgeous in reality. How wonderful you have your father-in-law’s car and that Michael is working on it. I’m betting it’s giving him a lot of satisfaction and memories. I was hoping you’d read this because I knew your husband was a gear head, too.

  7. jodie filogomo

I’ve never been very interested in cars either. In fact, I’ve only ever had 3 in my life…and I’m hoping my Del Sol lasts a long time. It’s such good exercise to get in and out of because it’s so low to the ground.
    This was fun.
    XOOX
    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! I wasn’t until I met Mike. Now, I notice all the details and such. Those Del Sols were really cool cars, too!

  8. My favourite ones I told you in your reminding th 10th post. Of your listed and pictured cars my favourite one is the last, the old Duesenberg. A really great looking car. But I would like to drive all other cars as well.
Sorry, I don´´t have cars in my linked post.
Have a good time and all the best
    Violetta

    • Thanks, Violetta! Those Duesenbergs are just magnificent, aren’t they? I would like to drive all the ones I never owned, too!

  9. I have always wanted a Corvette! I love the look.
How awesome that Nigel surprised you with that Saturn Sky!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thanks, Kellyann! I was shocked with that gift! I forgot to mention it was a Christmas present. We traded it in for my current car…a Honda Civic of all things! But, as gorgeous as it was, it had so many blind spots. I was afraid to drive it on the interstates around here. I think you would look spectacular in a Corvette! What color would you get?

  10. I think I’m too practical because I don’t care about cars other than comfort. My parents never had nice cars growing up (we were a 1 income family) so it isn’t something I ever really wanted. But there are some pretty sweet looking cars I’d love to try someday! I had 2 different manual cars and loved driving them!

    • Thanks, Laura! For some reason, we always had two cars that I remember. Part of that may have been that my mom’s best friend’s husband was a car salesman. Plus there were four of us. I remember my dad having a number of used cars until he was able to finally get a Mustang. He was thrilled. He got another one a few years later. But, by then, my mom was working full-time as we were all in school. I do love driving manual cars.

  11. I love a VW bus. One of my friends in high school had one. I always felt so cool when I got to ride around in it with him. He was way cooler than me anyway so I felt that whenever I hung out with him. Lol. We always go to the car show on Father’s Day at Greenfield Village, and I find myself longing for those old station wagons that have wood paneling details. I also like the Gremlins. 🙂

    • Oh, the Gremlins!! They were such a fun little car. We actually had two Chevettes! I’m not giving up on having a VW bus someday. I’ll be the 80 year old woman with who knows what color hair driving it! I bet the car show then is amazing! Mike had a PT Cruiser for a few years (before our son totaled it), and I always thought it would be cool with those wood panels, too!
