Gallery of Style: Promenade!

Before we get into the Gallery of Style, I wanted to update y’all on Nigel and his hip journey. I hinted at it yesterday, but I was just too daggone tired to write more. His hip was replaced, and the surgeon said everything is tight and ready to go. When we (my oldest son and I) met with him, I asked him if Nigel would be able to walk with a walker or a cane. He said he saw him walking without anything eventually! I could have cried…I was that happy. As most of you know, this has been a very long journey for Nigel (and me). As I write this, we’re still in the hospital. He’s had some problems with his blood pressure being very low (as in under 100 over under 75). Nigel has never had a problem with low blood pressure…quite the opposite, in fact. BUT, HE WALKED! He actually walked today with a walker, of course. I haven’t seen him walk for ages like he did today. So, yes, I am smiling and about as happy as a little kid in a toy store! But, it’s time for Style Imitating Art. As usual, I went looking for a new to me artistic moment in time. Well, it wasn’t truly new to me, I just didn’t know much about Expressionism nor did I know much about its artists. While I’m still not 100% sure, I feel I have a working knowledge of Expressionism now. If you want to read the post with all the info and more information about my look, you can find it here. The interpretations for the artwork are quite varied! So, without further ado…

Gallery of style…

First up is Sally from Within a World of My Own. She says, “The green and white in the painting caught my eye first and inspired me to combine a white “modern twin set” with my green pants for the first time.  I wanted a scarf that went with it – I decided on this boldly colored large-scale fish scarf because of the green and pink (similar to the lady on the right’s skirt) and because it had the spring/summer vibe I was looking for.  The painting has a bit more of a summer-to-fall feel with the darker, more muted tones, but I didn’t think anyone would mind me tweaking the color palette a bit in my look.  I finished off my outfit with fun green flats and DIY jewelry.  I thought the bracelet captured a good range of colors from both my scarf and the artwork.”

Next up is Shelbee who writes, “My first plan was to wear a thrifted dress in a gorgeous green on green floral print that is perfect for this artwork but the dress itself was absolutely hideous when I put it on so I need to do some sort of upcycling to it before it’s actually wearable. Back to the drawing board I went and came up with this insane combination of unlikely layers. I leaned into the colors and vibe of the central female figure’s outfit and added a green floral scarf for those beautiful trees in the painting. I really liked the outfit with just the vibrant blue shorter dress layered over the rust color maxi dress but there is an embroidery pattern on the bodice of the blue dress that wasn’t quite working for me. So I added a rust colored tie dye button down to cover the embroidery. The long layers were looking kind of blah so I tied  little knots in all of my hems for some extra interest and then I kind of liked this odd outfit.”

Here is Salazar who writes, “I know I wouldn’t be able to go very literal with this, so I went with these trousers to reflect the green trees, and my striped shirt and scarf are to mimic the strong lines and colors. There is a bit of gray and orange in the painting too, which I echo in my shoes. All in all, I’m happy with how the outfit turned out, even if it’s a looser interpretation!”

Here is Suzy! She says, “For my outfit, I chose my deep emerald velvet blazer because it reminded me of the lush green tones in the painting. Underneath, I wore a bright cobalt blue top inspired by the vivid blue dress worn by the central figure. Then came the tropical floral maxi skirt bursting with greens, reds and pinks, echoing the painterly colours scattered throughout the artwork.!”

Finally, here I am! It seems, with Style Imitating Art, I either choose Kantha Bae or April Cornell. But, I didn’t do that this time! I wore a pair of pants from Gudrun Sjödén, a red scarf from Gudrun Sjödén, a red tank from Old Navy, and a J Jill denim jacket. I actually really like this look and will definitely be wearing it repeatedly!

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!

  7. Best news Marsha regarding Nigel/ Mikes hip. It must have been emotional to see him walk with the aid of a walker, chuffed for you both.
Loving all the different interpretations of the painting, so interesting how you all put a different look/ spin on it.

    • Thank you so much, Linda! I did have to fight back some tears, but they were tears of gladness.

Weren’t they all just wonderful? I love when we get such different looks for the same art.

  8. Oh Marsha, I just did a little happy dance for you! How exciting that Nigel was able to walk that soon after his hip replacement. I am so glad that this doctor is delivering fabulous results for you! What a lovely array of fabulously colorful outfits prompted by this artwork, too!
    Shelbee

    • Thanks, my friend! It is so wonderful to see him walking even if it’s slow and a titch lop-sided. I loved seeing so much variety! I really loved this art.

  9. So pleased that the op went well. Hope Nigel has a full and speedy recovery. Great to see the Gallery of Style, love Sally’s greens.

    • Thank you so much, Gail! We are home, and he is walking upright! Sally did a wonderful job with her greens, didn’t she?

  10. Hurray for Nigel’s surgery being a success! I am smiling at how much you must have loved seeing him walking with that walker! Wishing you both the best during his recovery.

I loved the variability in this outfits for this artwork. Dressing like one of the subjects in the painting, inspired by the overall color scheme, taking parts of the color scheme, and combinations thereof. I don’t think Suzy’s submission got its details in the post, though. The print of her skirt was terrific for this artwork.

    • Thanks so much, Sally! It was amazing to see him walking upright and using both legs! Thank you for letting me know about Suzy! I’ve corrected that. I think this was such a good piece because there were all the colors and shapes.

  11. Wonderful news about Nigel. Next stop, the dance floor. What a fun piece of art to interpret with the vibrant colors. All of you caught the spirit, with Suzy being my favorite this time.

    • Hahaha!!! I have been trying to get him to take dance lessons for years. Maybe, now I can do that! I’m so glad you enjoyed the Gallery of Style! Suzy’s really was smashing, wasn’t it?

  12. jodie filogomo

This was such a good one, and everyone came through so differently. That makes it so fun.
    XOOX
    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! I always love to see how everyone else interprets the art! I am beginning to be more surprised when we look more alike than different!

  13. Such a cute outfit on you – I love those pants. And I used to have saddle shoes like Salazar (when I was in middle school) and now I want some now. Its crazy wonderful how fashion ebbs and flows.

    • Thanks, Gina! I always wanted saddle shoes, but they would have been the ordinary black and white ones. I may have to look for some!

  14. So very pleased that all went well with Nigel’s hip operation and will be able to walk unaided in time . I bet you did your own happy dance. Everyone did such excellent interpretations on this one.

    • Thank you, Jill! Well, if I could dance, I probably would have. Instead, I went in the bathroom, shut the door, and cried tears of joy! I didn’t want him to think they were tears of sadness. Weren’t the interpretations just amazing? I’m always surprised at the variety!

  15. A big yay to the outlook on Nigel’s surgery. I’m sure it was an unspeakable relief to hear those words from the doctor.

You style the art pieces so well. Your pants have such beautiful movement and fine detail.

    • Thank you, Edi! You know, more than most, how long this has been going on. I’m glad we’re on this side of the surgery.

Thank you, too, for the compliments. I do my best!

  16. Great interpretations everyone. How fun that Suzy added an umbrella and your palazzo pants are perfect!

So glad you guys can pitch the cane and walker!! Welcome back to some sense of normalcy.

    • Thanks, my friend! I was going to use my new white LOVE umbrella I got at the museum and completely forgot about it. I just love these pants. They are so much fun.

Well, the walker and the wheelchair are still in action, especially at night, when he’s a little drowsy. But, I’m looking forward to storing them!

  17. I loved seeing all the colorful details and your outfit was perfect for the painting! The bold colors from the artwork look like a lot of fun to style!

    • Thank you, Laura! I really loved this piece of art because it was so colorful. I think everyone’s look was so different and yet definitely fit the brief.
