Songful Style: “Freak Flag”

“Freak Flag”

Well, the heat and humidity have arrived in Central Indiana. I think they used to call them the dog days of summer, but I prefer to think of them as the slog days of summer. There’s nothing to do but slog through this air. Anyway, welcome to the last Monday in July and another edition of Songful Style! Suzy and Shelbee decided to riff (see what I did there) on Style Imitating Art only with music! Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Suzy of The Grey Brunette, and I make up the bloggers in this group. You can find all of us on our blogs and Instagram.  Our ensembles (pun intended) may be inspired by the lyrics of a song, the artwork of the album cover, maybe the MTV video, or even a memory the song evokes. Shelbee chose this unusual but fun song. Last month, Suzy selected “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” Oh, and there’s a link party, too!

Why, yes! My hair is different.

The artists…

Made up of various anonymous artists, this band formed over 5,000 years ago in Nashville, TN. In reality, this funk rock band has eight members who keep their identities a tightly bandaged secret (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Rumor tells us there are several Grammy awards on the shelves of some members. Perhaps, the most pragmatic reason for the anonymity is they are under contract to other record labels. Whatever the reason, I think the whole mummy schtick is part of the fun!

Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM’s mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. (source)

The song…

(Oh yeah!)

{Verse 1}
I know you're pretending to be shy
But I see something naughty in your eyes
There's no shame in just being who you are
On the dance floor is a perfect place to start

{Pre-Chorus}
It must be unfurled
If you want to show the world

{Chorus}
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
We're not hear to judge ya
We're just here to love ya
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
I see no reason why
You can't let your freak flag fly

{Verse 2}
Run it straight up the pole
Gotta show your colors 'fore get too old
You be Velma, I'm Scooby-Doo
Nothin' 'round here is too taboo
Rock the mystery van like a water bed
Bring Daphne and Shaggy but don't tell Fred

{Chorus}
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
We're not hear to judge ya
We're just here to love ya
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
I see no reason why
You can't let your freak flag fly

{Verse 3}
Crack it
Like the Liberty Bell
Smack it
With a rebel yell
Shake it
Like a salad toss
Stitch it
Like Betsy Ross

{Chorus}
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
We're not hear to judge ya
We're just here to love ya
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
We're not here to judge ya
We're just here to love ya
We're not here to judge ya
We're just here to love ya
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
Let your freak, let your freak
Let your freak flag fly
I see no reason why
You can't let your freak flag---

What does it mean…

This is one of those songs I just couldn’t find any information about the meaning. So, you get my take on the song. I think it’s a song about liberating yourself from whatever inhibitions you may have. While many would argue this song is very sexual in nature, I prefer to think it is more about being free to acknowledge those parts of yourself you keep hidden from others. Maybe, you’d love to dance wildly at a concert (or anywhere actually) but feel like you’d just make a fool of yourself (hmmm…a little too telling). This song encourages you to just let loose and enjoy yourself. Maybe, when you’re out and about, you’d like to wear your dress that looks like a nightgown and robe. This song would encourage you to do just that like I did here. But, I do wonder what they have against poor Fred!

The video…

This is my favorite of the band videos because you can see the details of their costumes much better. I do wonder if their instruments and straps might not give away their true identities. I know many musicians have favorite guitars and such. I wonder how warm those costumes are, too. Are they linen strips? I somehow doubt it.

This is a “live” performance from Cincinnati in 2022. If strobing lights bother you, you might want to skip this one.

Just a warning…NSFW…this was the first video I saw for this song several months ago. I honestly don’t like the portrayal of women in this video. I do like, however, the creative way of “performing” the song. I could skip the live action portion altogether. I’m not a prude, but I would prefer that part not be in the video. So, just a warning…if you’re a little squeamy (my new word), you may want to skip this video.

Interesting covers…

I wasn’t able to find many covers of this band. Most of what I could find were covers of “Freak Flag” from Shrek. I have to admit, while the singer does a nice job with the song, it kind of loses something without the mummy attire.

I didn’t love this one. That’s probably because I can’t detect his bass…chalk it up to old ears. Dude has lots of guitars, though.

My interpretation…

For the teeniest moment, I contemplated having Nigel wrap me in toilet paper and take photos. But, as we all learned a few years ago, toilet paper is a precious commodity! And, I don’t think we have that much toilet paper right now. So, I did the next best thing. I went with whites and off whites. I wish this sweater didn’t hug my butt so much, though! I probably should have bought a petite size in it, but they didn’t have one in the store. My pants are sold out, but you can see them here in a completely different look. The linen jacket is from Talbots. I’m not in love with this look. I think it’s because the jacket just doesn’t work over the sweater. I probably wouldn’t ever wear them together anyway.

The Lewk!

You are probably getting so tired of these Willow sandals, but, gosh, are they comfortable and versatile! I thought this necklace was similar to the breastplates worn by pharaohs of ancient Egypt. But, something was missing. Sally of Within a World of My Own recently suggested wearing multiple necklaces like Shelbee does. Sally calls several necklaces worn together a neck mess! I love that, but I fear I don’t actually have a neck mess. I did throw on another necklace from J Jill (sold out). The earrings are so old. I bought them at Target many, many years ago!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I had never heard of this band until Shelbee told me about them shortly after a different Songful Style challenge. I think it’s a very interesting concept…keeping band members’ names hidden. I also kinda dig the music itself. So, can we talk? Have you seen a high concept band like this? Are you keeping parts of yourself hidden? Or, do you proudly wave your freak flag? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk! I promise to respond as quickly as I can.

  1. I went with whites too, Marsha, for obvious reasons lol! I kinda like you mixing whites with creams…it’s not something I would normally do but I will certainly give it a try now!
    I’ve been enjoying listening to the band these past couple of days, and I’ve added them to my Spotify playlists already. I’m really looking forward to creating an outfit for your Blondie song next month. I’m going to have a quick look now to get the creative juices flowing!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Thanks, Suzy! I love your look. It’s so perfect and wearable. I like whites and creams together, but I don’t really like this look. I think the sweater is too long for it.

      I have no clue what I’m going to do about the Blondie song, but I’d better think about it now. Maybe, I need to go outside of the box this time!

  2. I had never heard of this band before either. I’m impressed at what you managed to come up with because I did think other than wrapping yourself like a mummy what else do you do?! LOL

  3. I am not familiar with this song or group so thanks for enlightening me! But honestly, I am more impressed with your new hair! I love how you change it up and it always looks so good. You are so brave and fun Marsha – I love it!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Awww, thanks so much, Kellyann! I love having fun with it. My hairstylist told me she loves doing the fashion colors on me because she doesn’t have to do any bleaching to achieve the colors. I don’t worry about it because I know it’s temporary, and if I really hate it, I just wash it in really hot water and it fades more quickly.

  4. I love the colours in your hair!

  5. I have never heard of this band or their song. I have an eclectic playlist on my phone. Old favorites from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s to newer songs I only find by accident, to church songs, to classical music. I love your outfit. Light and breezy. Perfect for the extremely hot summer we are having!

    • I couldn’t not comment on your hair. It’s Fabulous!!
      And the look would have been fun in toilet paper ???

      Xoxo
      Jodie

      • Thanks, Jodie! I love to play with the fashion colors as does my stylist! But, can you imagine rewinding all those rolls of toilet paper? I’m sure the neighbors would have written up a petition right away about the crazy woman in toilet paper!!

    • Thanks so much, Eileen! I like the pieces separately but not this particular combination. I had never heard of this band before Shelbee chose them. They are quite different, right? But, there’s no denying their abilities.

  6. Marsha, I really like that you and Suzy both went with whites for your outfits. I went in the total opposite direction with a color and print explosion! I think this is a really cute summery outfit, but I agree with you that the sweater might be a bit too bulky for the jacket. But it doesn’t look bad in anyway at all, I just can see where you might not feel comfortable wearing those two pieces together. Outfit aside, your hair looks freaking amazing! I am loving the color and the style on you. And that one cartoon video that you don’t like was made by someone completely unrelated to the band! I thought the band had created that, but upon further research, it’s just some guy who makes cartoon videos of songs. LOL This was super fun and I am really excited to go see HCTM perform live in October! Michelle and her husband are going with us, too! It is going to be such a fun time.

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I didn’t even think about being a little less literal. I need to expand my horizons! Yeah, I think the sweater is just wrong with this jacket, but I never would have worn them together other than for a fashion challenge (which sorta failed). I’m glad you like my hair. I’m amazed at the reactions I’ve gotten about it. Complete strangers have stopped me to comment on it. It will be gone in a month or so. I thought the cartoon video was interesting, but I just didn’t like how the women were sexualized in it. Why do cartoon women always have to be so curvy and appear bimbo-y? That just bothers me.

      You, Michelle, Jeff, and Dan will have a blast!! I can’t wait to see photos!

  7. I can see what you mean about the sweater and jacket, but kudos for going with a layers for that “mummy” vibe :D. I think the outfit would really work well without the jacket for a normal daily look. I normally don’t like sandals but amazingly I actually love how these look in the outfit. That column of off-white with gold jewelry is beautiful, and of course I love your layered necklace! This double necklace combo has a simplicity and elegance but wonderful presence, too. And I’m digging the mermaid hair!

    • Thanks, Sally! I bought the sweater and pants to wear as an outfit along with the breastplate necklace. I added the linen jacket because linen, right? After looking at the photos, I wasn’t sold on it, but I had just plumb run out of time! It’s funny you call it mermaid hair because it wasn’t exactly the vibe I was going for, but I actually love it!

  8. I love that your attention to detail even extended to wearing a necklace that reminded you of the breastplates of Pharohs. I can see it! Although if I saw you just wearing it I would never have thought it! I have never heard of this band either! The concept sounds very interesting!

    • Thanks, Erin! I actually bought the necklace to go with this sweater. The breastplate idea came to me as I was looking through the photos. I think it would be fun to see this band…if I could stand at the back of the room in a little corner!

  9. It’s interesting to hear about your thought process putting together this outfit. I like the different ivories, whites, and creams paired together. Your hair stands out beautifully!

    • Thank you, Laura. I normally like those colors together, too. I think, in this outfit, the length of the sweater is what’s throwing it all off.
