Style Imitating Art: “Grand Canyon National Park”

Style Imitating Art comes from SalazarTerri, and Shelbee. You can think of it as fashion meets art museum! Style Imitating Art challenges people to find inspiration in different art works, create looks based upon that art work, and share them with the curator for that piece. Every other Monday one of the three selects an inspiration piece of art and posts the image on their blog. They then invite others to interpret that art work through their style. The following Monday, they share their outfits. The curator shares submissions the following Wednesday on her blog. Salazar chose this week’s art work. If you’d like, you can read why she chose it here. Style Imitating Art is an interesting way to inspire your outfits. I know it does that for me! You can see a few of my looks hereherehere, and here.

Inspiration art work…

About the artists…

In 2016, a group of artists and designers created a series of posters to celebrate the glory of our national parks. As far as I can tell, this group operates under the umbrella, Fifty-Nine Parks. You can purchase individual posters of the parks (some are sold out) as well as puzzles, books, and games. A portion of the price of the posters is donated to the National Park Service. Over the years, they have raised over $160,000. You can read more about this endeavor here.

A little more…

Our particular piece of art was created by two guys from California, Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman. While Kuhlken is from San Francisco and Goldman is from Los Angeles, the pair met in high school when they formed a band. The two also designed their album covers as well as flyers and posters. Eventually, they began designing for other concerts. Both focused on the graphic arts while in college.

Today Dan serves as the lead illustrator for DKNG. Dan prides himself on being an illustration chameleon, working in many styles but with an emphasis in vector illustration, and specializing in producing screen printed work.  As a member of a design duo where each partner wears many hats, Dan also leads the marketing and retail arms of DKNG.

Today Nathan heads up the graphic design wing of DKNG. Nathan also has a passion for typography that comes in handy for the team’s lettering and branding projects (source).”

Still more…

Kuhlken and Goldman are the designers, owners, and everything else for DKNG. It took me a little minute to realize the name of their company is just the combination of their initials! Check out this article for more information about the two as well as to see “screen printing” at work. It’s near the end of the article.

And, the front porch is decorated!

About the art work…

The poster measures 18″x24″ (~46cm x ~61cm) and is screen printed on 100# French Pure White paper. You can purchase a print here. What’s amazing is that this particular poster involves only four colors!

My interpretation…

As soon as I saw this art piece, I knew I would use this scarf. It’s an infinity scarf I purchased at Charming Charlie’s years ago. And, when I pulled it out of its storage cube, I could tell the scarf was definitely the perfect jumping off point! I was lying in bed trying to come up with the other parts of the outfit when I remembered I’d just gotten this tee from Old Navy. I swear by these tees! This is a tunic style so I tucked the bottom of it into my bra band which made it the perfect length. The cardigan which closely resembles the lady jackets so popular now is from J Jill a few years ago. I would never have paired it with an orange tee, but Susie, the color expert at my J Jill, suggested it. This is a different orange tee from the one I bought then. It was then just a matter of adding jeans, shoes, and accessories. The jeans are from Old Navy, too, but I bought them this summer so I don’t know if they are currently on the website. I think this is the most literal interpretation I have ever done!

I was right, wasn’t I? The scarf is perfect!

The Lewk!

When I say I wear these Sofft Somers sneakers a lot, I really mean it! They are there at the door waiting patiently for me every day. I truly do need to get another pair of slip on sneakers. Any suggestions? These citrine earrings are an old eBay buy back when I was buying so many pieces of sterling silver jewelry. I honestly don’t know why I picked citrine as they really don’t go…or, do they?

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I have to admit I haven’t been to that many National Parks which is a terrible thing to admit at my age! I have been to the Grand Canyon twice. The last time, Nigel and I took the train to Flagstaff, shuttled to Williams where we stayed at the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel. The next day, we took the Grand Canyon Railway train into the canyon. It was one of those trips of a lifetime! I would love to do it again. So, can we talk? Have you visited many of your country’s national parks? Which is your favorite? What is the best part of a national park? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.

Thank you!

  1. Our national parks are totally nothing like yours. And the Grand Canyon are so unbelievable huge! Amazing. Love the colours you are wearing!

    • Well, the US is a pretty big country! There are so many I haven’t visited. The Grand Canyon truly is unbelievable even when you’re staring right at it. Your brain just can’t take it all in! Thank you so much, Nancy! I really love this color combination!

  2. That scarf really is perfect! I have been to just a small handful of national parks but so far my favorite is Acadia. I love that rocky coastline and those gorgeous ocean views. Though my husband and I have made it a goal to try to see most (I can’t say all because a few of them that I’ve read about require tent camping and overnight stays since they are so rural) of the National parks and I have a whole list going of the ones we’ve seen the ones left to see.

    • Thanks, Joanne! We have been to Acadia twice, I think. And, neither time was Thunder Hole thundering! But, the park is beautiful! I need to make a list, too. That’s a wonderful idea.

  3. These colors look so good on yo Marsha! I am so glad your JJill stylist suggested the pairing, it really works and is so flattering. Your jacket is so on trend, I hope you wear it a bunch!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Thank you, Kellyann! I have worn this sweater/jacket so much since I bought it over four years ago! I would never have thought to pair it with orange, but once I did, it’s the perfect combination!

  4. We are huge National Parks fans in our family so I love this theme! We go to one almost every year. Your look capture the color and spirit of this poster. I adore the texture of your jacket!

    • That is really cool, Kathrine! I need to make a list and see which ones I’d like to visit! Thanks so much!

  5. Yep, this was a total winner. And bravo for tucking in the tunic length tee to your bra band to shorten it.
    XOXO
    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! When you’re short, you do whatever you can, right? I find it to be the easiest way to “shorten” a tee!

  6. This whole look is great. And that tweed jacket is my fav it is such a fall and winter staple and always looks chic. https://www.bauchlefashion.com/2023/12/5-ways-to-wear-olive-oil-green-colour.html

    • Thank you so much, Heather! That means a lot coming from you! I do love this jacket and wear it quite often!

  7. Love the stylish look. That is a beautiful scarf.

  8. Oh my gosh, Marsha, that scarf couldn’t be more perfect! The stripey pattern and the colors are completely on point. And I really like the pairing of the scarf with your tweed jacket. Also, tweed and denim is such a fun combination, too. I have only been to 2 (maybe 3) national parks in my lifetime. We went to Yosemite for our honeymoon. And of course you know that I visit the Great Smokey Mountains on an annual basis. I am pretty sure we went to Shenandoah in Virginia when I was very young but I don’t remember it. This was such a cool choice of artwork. I had fun learning about the 59 Parks Project!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Shelbee! I was just afraid I had maybe donated it! But, I knew it was perfect for this challenge! One of the things I like about SIA is combining things I wouldn’t ordinarily do. Now, I will probably wear this sweater and scarf together on a regular basis. I’m honestly not sure how many I’ve been to as I didn’t know there were 59 of them! I really do wish I had a place to hang that poster because it’s gorgeous!

  10. It may be a literal interpretation, but it turned out beautifully! The colors are so pretty, just like a sunset.

    • Thank you, Laura! I knew this scarf was just perfect for the challenge. You were just there, weren’t you? Did you see the sun set or rise? We didn’t see either when we were there, unfortunately.

  11. Hi marsha your outfits looks stunning and your poses are great your glassess make s iT onn !!
