Gallery of Style: “The Basket of Flowers”

Welcome to the Gallery of Style! I loved this painting so much…the colors, the woman’s pensive look, the basket of flowers! I hope you enjoy all the different interpretations in our Gallery of Style! If you’d like to read more about why I selected this piece of art, you can find that here. To read more about the art, the artist, and my outfit, you can find that here! But, you’ve come to see not me, but the others who have joined in on the styling for “The Basket of Flowers,” right?

Gallery of style…

First up is one of my Weekend Traffic Jam co-hosts, Sue, from Women Living Well After 50. She says, “When I first saw this prompt on Marsha in the Middle’s blog I knew immediately what I would be styling. The item I selected has always reminded me of a Monet painting and it’s colours are certainly reflected in ‘The Basket of Flowers’…My choice was this beautiful scarf which my daughter gave me several years ago. I love the muted tonings and wearing always makes me feel as if I’m in Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny, France.”

Next is Tresi. I couldn’t pick just one of her photos because they’re all different. She says, “It turned out to be a really useful exercise, since I was on the verge of ditching the blouse – I loved the idea of the collar, but maybe too big for me, until… Inspiration! Your challenge got me thinking outside the box – thanks!” I love the varied ways she used since she was going to get rid of the blouse! And the blue stripes with the floral dress definitely work for the challenge!

Sally is always so good at looking at the art and finding inspiration in ways I never notice! She says, “I was inspired by the blue wallpaper to wear this navy floral skirt. I considered pairing it with a striped top or cardigan for a more direct interpretation, but I decided I wanted to create a column effect with the navy blouse so that the rose color of the cardigan stood out more. (After all, what says flowers more than a floral print plus rose color.) While my version is a darker, moodier take on light, sweet pinks and blues of the painting, I liked how the outfit turned out!”

Next is Leslie from Once Upon a Time Happily Ever After. Leslie and I are both part of the gang at Ageless Style and the Global Writing Challenge on top of just being good old friends! She says, “I happened to wear a dress this weekend in colors similar to those of the painting so sending you this pic so I can play along.” Leslie and PC (Prince Charming) were at a wedding this weekend.

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey and one of our curators almost always has the perfect brooch! She says, “The striped shirt and blue trousers speak for themselves, I added a tie and brooch to reflect the background of the painting as well, and my pink shoes are a nod to the touches of pink in the painting. This outfit came together quite quickly for me, and I’m very happy with how it turned out.”

Next is Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge with…gasp…an April Cornell dress! Here’s what she says, “I started with this thrifted April Cornell floral dress that really reminded me of the wallpaper in the painting. To represent the woman’s attire, I layered the floral dress over a long white sundress and added a blue and white striped scarf as a hat band. My straw hat with the brightly colored flowers and my wicker bag filled with some fake flowers represent the title of the painting since they are essentially baskets with flowers! I added my colorful April Cornell fabric bead necklace, a shorter flower necklace, and some colorful beaded earrings to represent the variety of colors in the basket bouquet portrayed in the artwork. For my shoes, I wore pink velvet slippers to bring in the pink from the woman’s chair. Also, she seems like she might be wearing delicate velvety slippers on her feet, too. I love how this light summery outfit bloomed!”

Finally, here I am! I really honed in on the blue and used the floral accents on my shoes and jewelry as well as the flowers behind me to bring in the floral aspects of the painting!

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!

  4. I love seeing all the new faces in this post! Everyone did such an amazing job. Sue’s scarf and Leslie’s dress are absolutely perfect for this painting. I love all of Tresi’s interpretations, too. It’s all just so good!

    Shelbee

    • Thanks, Jodie! I was so impressed with Tresi’s different interpretations. That’s why I couldn’t just choose one.

  6. Wow, that was some style gallery. Your dress and Lesley’s dress too, was just perfect. But Shelbee absolutely nailed it. That was a great theme. Well done everyone!

    • Wasn’t it wonderful? Shelbee definitely wins the award. She is so creative and seems to have a bottomless closet!

      Thanks, Penny!

  7. Hi Marsha, I think we all nailed the brief and thank you for selecting such a delightful painting as our inspiration. I’m looking forward to next week and discovering what the next SIA will be. Have a lovely weekend. x

    • Thank you, Sue! I was so happy we had more people joining in! I love the Gallery of Style because I’m always surprised at the variety in the way people interpret the art. Have a marvelous weekend!

  8. A big round of applause to all the participants. I have missed this link up. Love love love Sue’s scarf. Just dreamy. And the way Tresi featured a blouse then a dress then the blouse with the dress. Genius. I cannot think outside the box (or closet) like that. I think Sally needs to create a paper bead bracelet to go with this SIA art. Fun to see how she emphasized the warmer colors in the painting rather than the more obvious blues and pastels. Salazar always has just the right accessory or little bit of fashion for every piece of art. Love her brooches. And Shelbee hit an absolute grand slam with her interpretation (currently watching the college world series and Tennessee is playing, can you tell?). She is so clever.

And then there’s YOU. Perfection, my friend. Most beautiful dress. You couldn’t look lovlier or have created a better take on this soft impressionist painting.

    • Thank you so much, my friend! I love this dress…J Jill does linen so well! I’m always amazed at how so many different outfits can come from one inspiration! I loved seeing everyone (including you)! I hope you’ll join in on more!
