Style Imitating Art: Sweet Dreams by Ruslan Khasanov

About this collaboration

Every other Monday, Salazar (14 Shades of Grey) and Terri (Meadowtree Style) host Style Imitating Art. For this collaboration, each of the contributors takes turns selecting an inspiration image. They then invite others to interpret that artwork through their style. You can read more about the process on each blog. This week’s selection is by Salazar. I believe they are looking for a third co-host so if you’re into art and would like to help them out, if you are interested, please drop a note to Salazar at 14shadesofgrey@gmail.com.

Inspiration Art Work

I so wanted to link a video to the Eurythmics!

While I couldn’t find much about Ruslan Khasanov beyond a couple of other blogs, here is what I could find. Ruslan Khasanov was born in Russia in 1987. I particularly like his motto: “Beauty is everywhere”. Isn’t that true? I mean, there are times I look at some art and think, “What in the world?” But, that’s the marvelous thing about art…it makes us think. It’s about perspective, I think, especially when it comes to modern art. Khasanov is a visual artist (hmmm…aren’t art-type artists visual). Please watch the video; it really is hypnotizing and glorious all at the same time! I came across this blog discussing Khasanov’s process and some other projects. This person discusses him so much better than I can. I hope you’ll head over there to read more about this intriguing artist and his work!

My Interpretation

When I first saw the video, I panicked a bit. I didn’t think I owned a single thing for this challenge. In fact, I thought I’d just work with the first few seconds of the video…the one featuring black and gold. I was determined to come up with a more colorful solution. When faced with a problem, I try to leave it and let my brain percolate. Sure enough, I gave myself a little mental slap and said, “Lilly Pulitzer, of course!” What is Lilly Pulitzer if not a riot of color! But, I am one of those people who consider certain clothes to be season specific…Lilly Pulitzer especially. I know Lilly Pulitzer has winter clothing, but I don’t want to wear Lilly in the winter. I like it in the spring and summer. Lilly Pulitzer screams warm weather to me! I know I’m going against the grain with that mindset. When I move to Florida, then I’ll wear Lilly Pulitzer in the winter! (I’m not moving to Florida anytime soon!)

Winter’s here!

We had some unseasonably warm weather in December, but winter has hit here in central Indiana. I love snow and winter, but I don’t like being cold. Between hypothyroidism and menopause, my internal thermostat is just plain broken! I toyed with the idea of doing a photo shoot in the house, but I want to keep those for when the house thermostat does take that huge nose dive! So, front porch it is, and these are probably the last photos of Christmas decor. That meant I needed to winterize my Lilly Pulitzer dress (similar)!

I considered wearing the dress over something…a long sleeved tee or turtleneck…but, that’s not really my style. I looked through all of my tights, and none of them even remotely worked. Black, of course, was the easiest choice. Strangely enough, I wore this same jacket in another Style Imitating Art (here). I thought the studded moto style jacket and the Lilly Pulitzer had that weird dichotomy I like at times. Adding my L’Artiste Rodeha boots enabled me to bookend both the color and the studs.

A little shaping

Another aspect of this jacket is the subtle shape it gives my waist. The dress is big on me to begin with and has little actual shape. By adding the jacket and zipping it up, I create the hour glass silhouette I actually have. The ruching on the sleeves gives the jacket even more interest. Shoulder pads also give the jacket some definition, but I think I forgot to make sure they were laying down correctly (but don’t look at the pictures to check). I truly need to wear this jacket more often. It’s a knit which makes it really comfortable. My problem is my jackets (except for my denim jackets) are hung up higher and are difficult to reach.

The Lewk

The earrings, from Banana Republic, are old. All of the bracelets are old and from Stella & Dot (I think). I thought the jewelry reflected the metalwork on the boots and jacket. The boots deserve an Oscar for starring in so many of my posts!

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I’m not sure I would wear this outfit. I like the way it turned out, but I just think this dress is for spring and summer. Call me backward and stubborn…go ahead, I’m ok with it! But, this jacket? I will be wearing it so much more because it’s really unique and gives me curves! How about you? Do you have clothing you feel is specific to a certain season or period of time? Did you enjoy the video of Khasanov’s work? You can find even more on YouTube if you like it. What do you think of my interpretation? Did I come close? I’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! If you enjoyed today’s post, won’t you please consider subscribing? To my subscribers, I really appreciate your support! 1. I like the colors on the dress and the jacket looks great on you. Your hair looks amazing!

    • Thank you so much, Lovely! My hair has been a process, I’ll tell you! First growing it out of several different layers, growing out bangs, growing out the color! But, I love it now! Thanks again!

  2. I love how you interpreted this art Marsha! I couldn’t agree more that Lily Pulitzer works perfectly. That jacket shows off your shape so well too!

    • Thanks, Kathrine! I knew Lilly Pulitzer was the right brand for the challenge. It was the winterizing that had me stumped for a bit! I’m falling in love with this jacket all over again!

  3. Now you did a great job and what a original theme! Very nice!

  4. That dress was the perfect choice for the challenge! The colors remind me of bubblegum and cotton candy. And yes, you need to wear that jacket more often! I just went through my closet last week and pulled out some pieces I hadn’t worn in a while to wear them as part of my daily outfits this week. I have so many different jackets that I need to make sure to add them in my rotation.

    • I thought of Smartees when I watched the video! It’s funny…when I was teaching, I had probably enough jackets to wear one a day for a month and not repeat. They were one of the first things to go. My jacket collection is my most curated section of my closet. And, I rarely add to it (except for denim jackets…they don’t count)! Do you do that hanger thing? I don’t, and I’m not going to because there would be too many hangers still facing the same way!!!

  5. You may call yourself backward and stubborn, but admitance is the first step, haha! Besides, you did wear it. Just putting it together totally counts.
My mom is stubborn like you about certain colors for certain seasons, but I’ve been twisting her arm enough that I think she’s finally relenting. I mean, heck, don’t we need bright colors in the winter even more so than the spring??
LOVE this Marsha!! Now, I would say try it with grey (maybe even a light grey)
    XOXO

    • Jodie, if you saw how much grey is in my closet!!! I happen to love grey because it’s so neutral. I can wear a fun scarf or a fabulous blouse with it! Just wait until you see an upcoming post…I think I may have met one of your early challenges!

  6. This was so clever Marsha, in FL people wear LP year round because it’s hot. I wondered what would happen in a colder climate!
Make sure you link up with Carrie and I every Thursday for Fashion Files!
    xo,

P.S. If you find any elves, please send them my way!

    • I’ll be honest, Kellyann, I didn’t know you posted on Thursday!!! I will now!

My daughter has several sweaters for the cooler seasons, but they don’t really ring my bell. This past summer, in Hilton Head, I wore Lilly Pulitzer almost every day because it was so hot and humid (how DO you do it), and my dresses were cotton knit and so much cooler! Even though the look came together, I don’t really think I would ever wear it!

Thanks for the invite. I’ll definitely be linking up!

  7. Spot on!! I scrolled down through the post looking for the inspiration art and couldn’t find it…all the while admiring your cute look. And then when I scrolled back up, I realized the video clip was the art and not an ad!! Ha!! Another blogger I follow loves Lily, too, but I’m having a senior moment and can’t remember who. The fit on that cute jacket is very flattering. And like Lovely said, your hair is so pretty.

    • Hahaha! No, Leslie, my blog isn’t that big yet! I always liked Lilly, but I could never fit into the shifts. Then, what do they do? They design jersey dresses! This dress was actually a gift from my daughter. My taste in Lilly runs just a bit more muted (if there is such a thing)! I do like this jacket…I really need to wear it more!!!

  9. I love pairing super bright colors with a base of black like you did, Marsha. It really allows the colors to pop and it is such a fun way to bring your summer LP dresses out for some cold weather play! And it’s a great way to brighten up the long gloomy days of winter. I have created lots of fun outfits from these art prompts that I wouldn’t really wear anywhere. But that’s the fun of it for me…I like playing dress up and seeing what I can create. Snap the photo and I call it my art! Haha I think you did a great job with this outfit and I am drooling over your boots…as I do every time you show them off!

    Shelbee

    • Oh, Shelbee, that makes me feel so much better! I am going to call this my art then, too! I know Jodie would disagree, but bright colors feel better in the spring and summer to me. I like my muted greys and deep colors in the fall and winter. And, I love these boots! I’m amazed how many times I’ve worn them since getting them!

Thanks so much for coming by!

  10. You look marvelous! Love your look and the contrast in the fun photo! And the gorgeous hair! Farrah Fawcett would be jealous!

  11. I think you did a great job interpreting the theme but there are certain things I think of in certain seasons and Lily definitely makes me think “summer!”

    • Thank you! While I like this outfit, I just wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing it. Besides, I have plenty of winter clothing! It was fun, though, trying to come up with something to match the theme!

  12. This Lilly Pulitzer dress is perfect for the SIA challenge. And I love how you “winterized” it. I totally understand how some clothing just seems more appropriate for a particular season. I feel that way about certain shades of colors. Teal is winter, but turquoise is summer in my brain. I have no idea why.

    Michelle
    https://mybijoulifeonline.com

    • You know…I feel the same way about teal and turquoise…I just hadn’t realized it. I’m guessing there are other colors I feel that way about! Ah, well, that’s what makes us unique!

  13. Yes, Lilly Pulitzer is so perfect for this challenge! I love how you have styled it for cooler weather. The moto jacket and boots are are perfect bookends for it. I’m so happy that you shared this great insight into the art work and hope to see more ideas from you in the future. Take care, Terri

    • Thanks, Terri! I have to admit this one was a challenge for this time of year! But, I did like the look…not that I would ever wear it as I’ve got plenty of winter clothes without having to dip into my spring and summer clothing!

  14. You look absolutely fabulous, Marsha! I love the colours of that dress, it’s perfect for this SIA theme this week. I missed out because I hadn’t realised Daenel had left the group and I was waiting for her to share the artwork. Silly really, I should have checked Terri or Salazar’s blogs! But I will be joining the fun next time!
Thank you so much for linking up me this week.
    Hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Thanks so much, Suzy! And, thanks for the link up! I wasn’t sure what to do at first, but this dress did the work for me!
