It’s time for another Global Writing Challenge prompt. Our current membership consists of Deb’s World, Suzy Turner, Within a World of My Own, Once Upon a Time, Happily Ever After, Cat’s Wire, Coffee and Cocktails at the Casa, and me. Leslie chose this month’s theme so be prepared to be exhausted when you read hers! Leslie can pack so much into one day…it’s amazing! I have never done one of these before so it will probably be waaay different from everyone else’s! Debbie is home and is joining us! All of the bloggers write so well…I think you’ll enjoy everyone’s take on the prompt! I hope you’ll visit all of these blogs because you are going to be amazed at, not only the diversity of ideas, but the stories of each person. As we consider ourselves a global group, if you’d like to join us, please let one of us know. We’d love to have more people from all over the planet! There’s also a link party at the end of this post!
If you’d like to join us, here are the prompts for the coming months:
- September – Poetry
- October – Birthday
- November – Superstition
Settle in…
I begin my day twice! If Nigel has a bad night, I may get up with him three or four times. On a good night, it’s only once or twice. This particular night, he only got up right as I was dropping off to sleep. I should know by now to just wake him up! He gets up for the day at around 6:45 am. I get up with him, push him into the dining area, and make his first cup of coffee. He uses the wheelchair to sit at the table so there’s no transitioning between his walker and dining chair (which is tricky). For the most part, Nigel uses his walker, but the wheelchair just works better at the table. I also take my thyroid medicine at that time. Then, I head back to bed for a glorious hour to hour and a half. That time is minus being half aware of his movement. It’s probably my best sleep of the night which is not good, I realize.
Starting the day…
I usually get up around 8:45. Remember, I’m a night owl, so it’s after midnight before I even think about going to sleep. My first task is to make the bed. I read somewhere making your bed first thing gives you a sense of accomplishment. I’m not sure about that, but I do like the bed made. Then, I take Jack out to do his business and feed him. I have my breakfast (a protein shake) followed by watered down Crystal Light lemonade. I sip at that all day long on days I’m not going to the museum. If I have an appointment of any kind, I try not to drink too much. Then, I check email, read a couple of blogs, and head to the shower. It’s about 10:00 by this time. If I have to wash my hair or even just rinse all the previous day’s product out, it’s going to add another five to ten minutes to my getting ready time. My hair is thin but porous so blow drying it takes some time. Oh, I forgot the most important part about my getting ready routine. I get out ye olde laptop and find a YouTube video to watch. My favorites are either Suzy’s, Bailey Sarian, Arne and Carlos, or Roscoe’s Tavern (reviews of Drag Race). I tell myself they help prevent hot flashes because I’m not constantly thinking about having a hot flash! At that point, I’ve done my skincare, brushed my teeth, and have started on THE HAIR. Ugh! Honestly, it’s the worst part of my day because it (THE HAIR) truly has a mind of its own. I never know how it’s going to behave.

Continuing…
I blow it dry upside down and use a round brush on my bangs (when I have them). Then, it’s on to the curling iron and Velcro rollers. On a good day, I can get my hair set in about 5-7 minutes. Next comes makeup which is fairly minimal. I use a really good SPF, eyeshadows (at least two), mascara, and eyebrow pencil. I do my eyes, then use the SPF as a kind of eraser should any of the eyeshadow have gone where it shouldn’t! I use a setting powder because the SPF is a little sticky. I use a touch of bronzer and then some blush. Of course, during all of this, I’m also checking on Nigel and Jack to see if they need anything. I sometimes fix Nigel’s lunch for him. Jack gets lunch, too. I know most people feed their dogs twice a day. I divide what Jack gets into thirds so he gets three meals, too! After all of that, my hair has cooled enough to take the rollers out. But, I also re-curl those sections as I take them down. Once it’s all down, I spritz it again with hairspray (told you I use a lot of product). Then, I finally get dressed.
A little more…
Once dressed, I style THE HAIR follow THE HAIR’S directions and try to zhuzh it up with texturizing spray then another hairspray to solidify the style! Remember, during all this time, I’m also watching (and talking back to) videos on YouTube. If I’ve waited too long to start all this rigamarole, I skip YouTube because I know that slows me down! I do pick out what I’m going to wear the night before so it’s just a matter of putting the clothes on. I also select my accessories and shoes the night before. During all of this, I’m practicing my tour…running my intro repeatedly as well as my transitions and information about the art and artists. The night before, I’ve already gathered anything I might need during the tour. These are usually photos of something relevant to the art. I make sure it’s all in my bag and at the door so I can just grab it and my purse on the way out the door.

At the museum…
After one last check in the mirror, I give Nigel a kiss, and Jack gets a pat on the head. It takes me about 25 minutes to get to the museum. There are two different routes I can take. One puts me on the interstate and then on to 465 (which I detest). The other takes me to a different interstate and dumps me right at the museum. After getting to the museum, I make sure I have my lanyard on and sign in for my tour. I try to get to the museum about 20-25 minutes early so I can wrangle some guests into coming along with me. I’ve gotten quite a few takers doing this. I am sure it’s my winning smile…hahaha!! Most of the time, you can read the body language of people and know they want you to just leave them alone. I also take photos of people in front of Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture. If you’ve seen the sculpture around the world and not in Indianapolis, you haven’t seen the original! We’ve got it at the IMA! I make my way back to the Ambassador’s desk and chat with the people in the area. Honestly, that’s one of the things I love about being a docent…just chatting with people, finding out why they’re at the museum, where they’re from, and ask them if I can help them with anything. My tours last between 30-45 minutes. It depends on how chatty the guests are as well as what kind of tour I’m giving. On this particular day, I was giving a VTS tour titled “I Wonder What She’s Thinking.” Luckily, I had several people who wanted to talk about the art!

After the tour…
When my tour ends, I usually have guests who want to chat just a little bit more about either the museum, special exhibitions, or the art we’ve looked at during the tour. This can last as long as 30 extra minutes. I am more than happy to talk with the guests because my job is to make sure they have a good experience at the museum. After I finish, I sign out of my tour. I usually take a spin around the museum, visiting all the galleries to see the new art that’s been installed and note which has been removed. I almost always see a couple of guards I “know” and talk with them for a bit. Of course, I hit the gift shop to see if there’s anything new. Right before I leave, I get my Diet Coke for the ride home. I use that drive to decompress a bit. I’m not as apprehensive about tours these days, but I do still get anxious that I’ll forget something important.
Home again…
Once home, I take Jack out, give him a snack, and then I chat with Nigel about my tour and how it went. He has yet to take one of my tours. I’m hoping that happens before the end of the year. Depending on how I feel, I may or may not change clothes. I almost always use this time before dinner to work on blogging whether that’s reading and commenting on others, responding to comments on mine, checking in on Instagram, or writing a new post. Then, it’s my second least favorite time of the day…dinnertime. I honestly hate cooking, and one of us has become quite picky in his dotage. As I’m cooking dinner, I get all the medications arranged for both of us, so I don’t have to do it later. I’m considering another meal plan or going back to Hello Fresh. Actually, I just want to win the lottery and have a cook! After dinner, I clean up the kitchen, load the dishwasher…all those kinds of things. Next is a walk for Jack. That’s always fun…hahaha! For some reason, the goof always poops when we go for walks. I’ve learned to take more than one bag because it might be more than once!

Evening hours…
Then, it’s back to blogging (see above). Nigel goes to the bedroom fairly early to do his physical therapy. I have about an hour and a half to continue blogging activities or read. Sometimes, I work on a new tour, researching the artist. I have several photos on my phone, and I’m always trying to come up with ways to link them together to form a new tour that’s engaging and informative. Around 9:00, I’ll start my evening skincare. I use micellar water to remove my makeup, then cleanse again with a Fresh product. I toggle between AHAs and tretinoin and then a really good moisturizer. I floss and brush my teeth, then take Jack out again.
The last few hours…
I should note I’m constantly taking Jack out because he knows there’s a bunny out there! He wants to catch it so badly, but he’s always on a leash. One reason is it’s a requirement of the HOA, but, more importantly, he’s always been on a leash outside (poor dog). I’m not sure what he’d do, especially if he saw that bunny! Jack is such a funny dog because you can set your clock by him! He knows when it’s lunchtime, snack time, and bedtime. If I don’t put him in bed by 9:30, he’ll go into his crate anyway. Once I’ve made sure the doors are locked, and the outside lights are on, I head to bed. We are currently watching “Grimm,” and I knit while it’s on. Around 10:30, Nigel is ready to call it a day. I either go back to the living room and work on the blog, or I read on my iPad in bed. I know that’s supposed to keep me awake. It doesn’t because my sleep is so bad right now. I fall asleep shortly after that.

Huge announcement…
I am so excited for this September! Alicia Keys and her husband, Swizz Beats (AKA Kasseem Dean), have a massive art exhibition that’s going around the country. And, they’ve selected the Indianapolis Museum of Art as one of the places to receive the exhibition! I cannot wait to see this and even hope to catch a glimpse of Ms. Keys! The exhibition, Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, will be on the fourth floor. I hope to be able to do something there. If you’re in Indianapolis from September 19th through February 28th, 2027, be sure to check this out! We are the fifth or sixth museum to host the exhibition! You can read a bit about it here. You can also just google it and discover so much more!
Wrap it up, Marsha!
So, how is my day different when I’m not at the museum? Good question! Those are the days I clean, do laundry, take Nigel to appointments, or talk him into going to the mall. I’m also working hard at cleaning out rooms so my kids won’t have to do that when the day comes. I’m failing miserably at that! I’m also constantly going through my closet, deciding what isn’t me anymore and deciding what to do with it. That’s the hardest part. I read, all the time, about the huge amounts of clothing sent to third world countries which have no need for the stuff they get sent. I try to give a lot of these clothes to friends. I do sell lots of Gudrun clothing on Facebook in a group I’m in. So, can we talk? What’s your day like? Are you an early bird or a night owl? Have you seen the LOVE sculpture? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as soon as possible.
Thank you!
I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for reading, commenting, subscribing or emailing! It truly means so much to me! If you’d like to follow me on Instagram, you can find me here.

I enjoyed hearing about your life. Everyone is different. I’m a morning person, rarely think about my hair, never wear makeup. I throw on comfy clothing that I can wear in the garden and I’m off for the day. At the other end of the day if I can be all done and tucked up in bed with my book by 8pm, I’m happy! I do then read for 2-3 hours!
Thanks, Rosie! Even though we have different habits, something tells me, we’d still be great friends!
Hi Marsha, this was such a fun prompt and I’m happy to be back with you all! Your post was a great insight into your days and I am always amazed at your blogging prowess! You get so much done 🙂 Your tours sound like fun and I’m sure your vivacious personality comes to the fore, you’re a great asset! Hoping Nigel is improving these days too.
Deb from debs-world.com
Thank you, Debbie! I’m so glad you’re back, too! I like to keep busy, and blogging definitely does that! Everyone who doesn’t see Mike every day can see improvement. I don’t necessarily since I’m with him all the time.
I am definitely an early bird. I was up at 4:30 this morning and I’ll probably be asleep by 9 tonight. That is so exciting that the Key’s collection will be coming to your museum! Hm… I should see if it’s coming near any of our local museums.
Thanks, Joanne! I don’t remember the last time I went to sleep at 9:00. It had to be years and years ago! I’m so excited about the Dean collection. It’s massive, and one of the docents has seen it. She said it’s just incredible!
I so enjoyed reading about your day, Marsha! I’m so touched that you enjoy my YouTube videos!! I sometimes watch videos when I’m doing my makeup too.
And I also make the bed immediately—there’s something about having it all neat and tidy before leaving it, isn’t there? I can never understand why anyone would want to leave their bed all messy! But I guess I am a bit of a neat freak lol
I really feel for you, having to put so much effort into doing your hair. I’m quite the oppositeI don’t even comb it lol. I usually throw on a headband and be done with it lol. And yes, it does look a little messy at times. But I’ll wet it and make it look a bit more presentable if I’m going anywhere!
Your museum work sounds so fabulous and I know I’ve said it before, but I REALLY hope to come and do one of your tours one day!
I need to continue watching Grimm. I started it again, but then forgot, and got distracted by other stuff!
This was a fun post, Marsha!
Big hugs
Suzy xx
Thanks, Suzy! I don’t always comment because I have auto start checked on my YouTube. If I don’t get to it before the video ends, I don’t think to go back and comment. I like to watch makeup videos, but I don’t have time to learn how to do that. A few swipes here and a few there and I’m good!
I do love to see a well made bed. Right now, we’re not using the primary bedroom so that bed looks a bit shabby. The bed in the guest room has an adjustable base which Mike likes (and I hate). Gosh, I would love to have your gorgeous hair. If it looks that good, and you’ve done nothing…wow!!
Yes, please come, and then I’ll go back to Portugal with you! I love Grimm and we’re getting close to the end. I think my other old favorites aren’t streaming anymore…Haven and I can’t think of the other one!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the post, Suzy!
That sounds like a plan, Marsha! Hopefully it won’t be too long until we can visit!
Was it The Librarians? I remember you recommending it? I watched a few episodes of the old series but I’ve just started the new….have you watched that yet? It’s quite good! Although I’m only three episodes in lol
Hugs
Suzy xx
Oh, that would be so much fun! Maybe next summer, if Mike can walk…
There’s a new series of the Librarians? I’ll have to look for it!
Are your tours usually in the afternoon? I have found in retirement that I don’t like to schedule anything too early because of my morning routine. I can comfortably get out of the house by 11. I’m sorry about dinner. My friend Heather feels the same. She has a salad every week night and goes out on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. So, on Monday, she goes to a little gourmet market and buys 4 prepared meals for her husband and daughter. The family meal at Whole Foods is really good if you have one near you. I bet any modern grocery has prepared meals, too. I feel like the meal kits are an awful lot of work because I’ve never made the recipe and there are lots of directions – lol.
Yes, almost all tours are in the afternoon. There are private tours and special tours for kids in the mornings (I did one Saturday). I usually leave for the museum at about noon for a 1:00 tour so I can make sure everything is where I expect it to be. I’m going to try Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods (I think there’s one or two near us). We were getting some from a boutique place near my oldest, but they were heavy and very pasta/rice based. Yes, it would take me about an hour for a Hello Fresh recipe. The result was almost always good, but there were too little vegetables.
Morning Marsha
Thanks for this run-through of your day. I was mightily impressed by how busy you are – all day. I’m staggered how much time you need to spend on your hair: my hair dries so fast I often have to spray it to finish styling.
Your caring duties for both Nigel and the dog are impressive. I have a notion of how much is required as I’ve been a carer and a cat owner.
Good luck in finding good homes for your unwanted clothes. I tell myself I’ll do that ‘someday’. I have clothes I’ve owned for 25 years that I still like and wear occasionally. Other stuff is more in/out – bad purchase or not loved enough.
My day: I’ve been up since 6.30, breakfasted, watered plants (we in our fifth drought), and undertaking tasks for the social club I’m secretary of. Reading your blog was a lovely distraction. Thank you.
Best wishes, Mary Evans Young, Oxfordshire, England
Thank you so much for taking time out of YOUR busy day to comment, Mary! You have accomplished so much while I’m still sleeping. My hair dries very fast if it doesn’t have any product in it. My sister (when she did my hair) often had to spray it to re-wet when she was cutting it. But, I think, since it’s now grey, perhaps, that has changed it, too. Caring for Nigel and the dog are acts of love…I promised to do that in my wedding vows. I don’t think anyone else would take care of them like I do. Oh, yes, the getting rid of clothes really has me in a conundrum. I could just take them where I’ve consigned before and tell them to donate them. They have connections with a women’s shelter. I would prefer that to Goodwill.
PS, I’d love to read any follow-up comments.
Mary, I don’t really know how my replies to comments works as I don’t comment on my own blog. I should probably do that from my husband’s iPad just to see what happens.
What a busy day Marsha, I’m a morning person. I can get up and start the day not like my husband who takes at least 30 minuets to function.
Like you make the bed as soon as I can.
If it’s a volunteer day, it’s a quick breakfast then out, I volunteer twice a week. I also do a yoga
/ Pilates class once a week which I love.
The rest of my day/ week is taken up with gardening, walking and cooking/ baking which I love.
I also do my hair and put makeup on everyday.
I wish I lived nearer the art gallery you volunteer at sounds wonderful.
Thank you, Linda! I try not to feel guilty about not being a morning person by telling myself I got up very early all the years I was teaching. I do know I would probably get more done in a day by doing that, but then I’d go to bed earlier so maybe not! Your day/week sounds lovely to me…especially the gardening bit! If you’re ever in Central Indiana, let me know and I’ll give you your own tour!
I’m a night owl still living on the normal schedule, but I’d love to shift to my preferences and probably will do so once my husband and I are both retired. I think it’s interesting how much people’s hair routines differ! When I (extremely rarely) wash my hair, blow it dry, and straight iron it, it takes forever and I feel like I need another shower from getting so hot. When I wash my hair, I wrap it up in a microfiber wrap for a while, then braid to air dry. I’m trying to lengthen the time between washings with a boar bristle brush, so we’ll see how that goes. Poor Jack, he’ll never get that bunny…for which I am grateful 😀
Thanks, Sally! My little sister doesn’t wash her hair very often either. It’s very curly but also very thin. I didn’t realize until my granddaughter was born, and I saw how thick curly hair can really be. I would love to not have to do anything to it. But, it’s just so not good when I do that!
I loved to see Jack!
You telling about your day at the museum was my favorite part, I really love reading about that and it makes me happy that you found something that works so well for you (and keeps you off the street 😋).
I also liked seeing the sweater, a fabulous pattern!
Thanks, Cat! He doesn’t look quite that dapper right now. He’s in serious need of a groom! Yes, I definitely need to be kept off the streets where I might get into all kinds of trouble! I knit that sweater (it’s actually lilac with the darker purple design in the middle) a few years ago. I was just too lazy to take photos of what I’m currently knitting. It’s not blocked anyway!
I tend to be a night owl, too, but then I also wake up early so I need to figure out a better system because I know it’s optimal to get 7 or more hours of sleep a night. You do pack a lot into a day and those spent at the museum keep your days full! I often wonder, as a retiree, how I ever accomplished all I did in a day! I’m excited for you and your museum – the Keys collection was at the Minneapolis Institute of Art last spring/summer and, from what I heard, it was fabulous!
Thanks, Laura! I have been a night owl ever since foot surgery in 2010. I tended that way, but the pain kept me awake until the early hours, and I just never reverted back to an earlier night. I do love the work I do at the museum. It truly feeds my soul. Like you, I wonder how I did it all when I was teaching? How in the world did I ever raise three kids? I had hear the MIA exhibition was just amazing! I can’t wait…I’m so excited about this!
After your interesting post, Marsha, I’m enjoying people’s comments….
I would really enjoy reading the comments as a thread, rather than ‘piece-meal’. Is that possible, please?
Gosh, Mary, I’m not sure, but I’ll definitely investigate it. It would be a rather nice feature, wouldn’t it?
These are so fun to read! “Everyday life” is really fascinating to me. I’m so glad all of you ladies are sharing your days!
Thanks, Jennibell! I always love to read the answers give for Would You Rathers. The explanations are usually better than the answers!
How nourishing for your soul to be around so much art (and exciting re Ms Keys!). You look very good for someone with disrupted sleep! And I love this colour on your hair! Very cool!
Thank you, Lydia! I will be gone the weekend the exhibition opens (when the Deans sometimes attend) so I hope she will come another time just to visit the art. I read if you get something like four to five good hours of sleep, that’s when the body does the most healing. I do get that most nights. I love my hair like this, too, and wish it would stay that way much longer!
Marsha, whew, that is a day for sure. I have wondered how you do your docent job with Nigel’s problems, without realizing he uses a wheelchair. You deserve a caregiver reward if anyone is passing them out. I vote for you getting back on HelloFresh. I would get nothing done without it. Thanks for your faithfulness to blogging and the link-ups.
Thanks, Aletha! He only uses the wheelchair in the very early hours and at meals (to fit under the table). Other than that, he uses his walker. I admit I always have a little trepidation when I get home. I’m never sure if I won’t find him on the floor because his left leg is still much weaker than the right. I like parts of Hello Fresh, but it took me at least an hour every meal. I may try some other company, or Amy suggested Trader Joe’s which isn’t too far from me.
Gosh, I get tired just reading all the things you do in one day. Do you ever relax? But how exciting about Alicia Keys! I hope you get to meet her!
Thanks, Nancy! I spend a lot of time relaxing, playing games on my iPad! I really hope I do meet her, but I’m gone the weekend the event goes live. Hopefully, she’ll come back to visit her collection. I just love her music and voice!
That’s a lot Marsha! You said Leslie’s day sounds exhausting, but you’re no slouch. I can’t resist mentioning how cute Jack is and how much I love your purple hair. Thanks for sharing a day in the life of Marsha with us.
Thanks, Christie! I’m going to take that as a compliment because I aspire to be like Leslie! Jack is definitely a cute little guy…one in need of a hair cut! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post.
You and I have quite a lot in common. I also hate cooking and blow-drying my thin and fine hair. But contrary to you, I am a morning person not an evening person. Our dog is the same as yours, on the clock. Knows exactly when it is feeding time, when it is time to go out etc.
Great that you are a tour guide in a museum. It keeps you occupied and your brain working. You will get a vicarious tour through the Royal Palace in Amsterdam on my blog next week. Hope you enjoy it.
Greetje
Thanks, Greetje! I am looking forward to my tour! Thin, fine hair is just not much fun. Do you ever notice there are few hair stylists who have that kind of hair? I swear Jack has a built in clock! I love being a tour guide, and you are absolutely right that it keeps my brain occupied. I’m constantly researching new to me art.
I enjoyed this so much. Have wondered about how your volunteer work at the museum ‘looks.’ Now I have a better idea. Do you come up with the themes for tours yourself or does the museum suggest a theme for you to create a tour around? All of it sounds much like teaching which I have likened to being on stage!! It can be so good but so draining. Would LOVE to take one of your tours. And I think you need to load up Mr. Nigel and take him to the museum for one of your upcoming tours so he can get a sense of it all.
Isn’t cooking just the worst? I have never minded it as much as I do right now. Have been toying with signing up for Hello Fresh again, too. But we still have to COOK the stuff. But the kits take away the worry over WHAT to fix. And whether or not you have all the ingredients.
Your pup is just the sweetest thing. I so miss having a dog. I know you have to take him out a lot but that can be a pleasant distraction. Unless it is raining or bitter cold. But you and I like winter!!
I finally chopped a lot of my hair off. It looks a bit thicker these days but I really don’t have the interest or energy to do much with it. Have enjoyed watching your IG wig spots and Kellyann’s too. Would love to try one but I think it would worry me to death. The only time I ever wore a girdle – the old fashioned kind with stays – I could not function, could not think straight for that darn thing. I think wearing a wig would affect me the same way.
Thanks, Leslie! We do get to pick our themes which is easier for some than others (meaning me). Some months, they encourage us to use a bit of a theme. September’s is art that tells a story! That will be a fun one! Oh, do come to Indiana! We would have so much fun! I would come to Texas as soon as Mike is on his legs again (figuratively and literally). Yes, cooking is awful! I liked Hello Fresh, but it took me a good hour to prepare everything. My other beef (no pun intended) was the lack of much in the way of vegetables. I still may give it a try. You know, Jack loves snow but hates getting rained on! Weird dog! I really like cats better, but I hate litter boxes! I’m glad you’re enjoying my IG posts about the wigs. They’re such a game changer. But, I worry they will stress my bio hair so I don’t wear them everyday. Oh, man, I remember wearing girdles to hold up my hose since my mom thought panty hose were the work of the devil or something! So far, I’ve only noticed they seem heavy. I think the more I wear them, the less I’ll notice that.
My dog always wants to go out to catch a bunny too. She’s also on a leash or lead.
It sounds like you put a lot of work in those tours.
Your nights sound like my dad’s nights because he helps my mom back and forth to the bathroom. He’s exhausted most days but he also has Parkinsons that makes sleep hard to come by anyhow.
Thanks, Lisa! There have been times I’ve almost forgotten to put Jack’s leash on. I honestly don’t know what he would do if he got out if there wasn’t a bunny around. If there was one, all bets would be off! I think he’d make his way back home. I do spend a lot of time on my tours, but it truly is a labor of love. The same goes for getting up with Mike…just like your dad, I’m betting.
