Style Imitating Art!

Welcome to another edition of Style Imitating Art! If you’re new to the blog, or just need a refresher, Style Imitating Art is a really cool idea pairing fashion with art. Last year, I joined Shelbee and Salazar as curators for SIA. We begin with a piece of art, create looks based upon that art, and share them on our blogs. Think of it as fashion meets art museum! Anyone and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. You don’t have to be a blogger to participate, either! I selected our inspiration artwork this week.

How it works…

Here are the details: Every other Monday, one of us will select a piece of art. That is shared via all three co-hosts’ blogs. On the following Monday, all three share their looks on their blogs. If you choose to participate, send a photo to the curator for that particular week. You, as well as the other participants, will be featured on the curator’s post that Wednesday. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! If you decide to play along this time, please send your photo to me by Tuesday, July 15th at 10:00 pm EST to be included. I hope you will join us! I think this could be the best way to start something new! Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to be a part of this. You can snap a photo and send it in. We love to have readers join in on the fun, too.

Why…

I chose this piece of art because I happen to love Bouguereau. I used one of his pieces in my graduation tour (post coming soon). I didn’t want to use that particular piece so I went looking for another. Honestly, it was hard to pick just one! I decided nudes were out…hahaha!! I also didn’t want one that was just cherubs or little kids. I thought At the Edge of the Brook was a beautiful representation of the kind of art Bouguereau created as well as being something that could be styled.

At the Edge of the Brook

How I do it…

I usually look closely at the piece of art, looking for objects, graphic or geometric qualities, colors, themes. Then, I just let it percolate in my head for a few days. Next, I go into my closet and see what springs out at me. Sometimes, the inspiration comes as I’m lying in bed. You just never know. Shelbee does an amazing job of adding props, if appropriate, to the artwork. Salazar almost always has a unique brooch or waistcoat that works! I often rely on scarves to add certain elements. But, honestly, there’s no way to do this wrong! Please do think about joining in on the fun! Once you try Style Imitating Art, you’ll find it becomes easier and easier.

    • I may have to find one! Or, make one…too bad they don’t still have those old fashioned candle rings…remember those?

  4. Your passion for blending art and fashion shines through, and the structure of Style Imitating Art makes it so accessible. Bouguereau was a lovely choice with timeless inspiration.

    • Thank you, Melody! I have really begun to embrace art. It truly makes me so happy. I can’t wait to share my graduation tour because the Bouguereau piece I used is even more lovely than this one!

  5. Oh I love this painting! Im.trying to think of another artist thsg this reminds me of. Thank you for introducing me to this one. I love art and that’s one of the first things we do when we travel, look at museums

    • Thanks, Jess! You might be thinking of Raphael or Titian. Painters like Bouguereau would have copied that particular style. We spend lots of time at museums, too.

  6. I see so much potential in this one and so many ways to be inspired!

    • Thanks, Laura! It’s a gorgeous painting, isn’t it? I hope lots of people join in. You would be more than welcome…hint, hint!
