Gallery of Style: “The Ten Biggest, No 7!”

The Ten Biggest, No 7 by Hilma af Klint

This is probably the most unusual piece of art I have selected…yet! If you want to read the post with all the info and more information about my look, you can find it here. This artwork was pretty popular because we have several looks! So without further ado, here we go!

Gallery of style…

First up is Salazar! She says, ”I knew I’d wear this skirt, because the color and the pleats are perfect for the big yellow shape in the center of the painting, and paired it with this top since it has some vine-shaped decorations that sort of mimic the squiggly shapes. I added this brooch, which is my go-to for anything abstract, and my black strappy shoes for the black lines in the painting.”

Shelbee says, “I just shared this new dress paired with a burnt orange kimono robe last week on my blog but the color and print seemed perfect for this painting so I restyled it with my bright yellow kimono robe for this challenge. I added my orange hat and tan platform sandals to pick more colors in the painting. I wore my pumpkin necklace because the big yellow shapes that dominate the painting look like pumpkins to me. My crocheted sunflower earrings brought in more yellow and a tiny bit of green. I didn’t think too hard or put too much effort into this outfit, I just put it on and it worked!”

Sally says, “The autumnal color palette and variety of irregular shapes in the painting reminded me of a black botanical print skirt in a similar color scheme, so I built my outfit around that.  I added a modern twin set of tank top and sweater in similar shades of green and finished off the look with some handmade jewelry as usual.  The paper pendant with three dogs on it didn’t have any direct counterpart in the artwork, but (1) it had a whimsical vibe that worked with the painting and (2) who’s to say some of those shapes aren’t dogs?”

Here is Suzy! She says, “I ended up in a green pleated skirt paired with a colourful crochet poncho and my brown floral cowboy boots (all from Vinted!), as well as an orange v-neck tee. It wasn’t intentional, but the end result gave off a bit of a boho-country vibe — like I might have wandered out of a music festival somewhere in rural Portugal! Ideally, I would have chosen something bold in mustard yellow but my wardrobe just wasn’t giving me that…so I threw my hair up in two very messy buns and used yellow scrunchies to tie them. I figured I would wear some yellow jewellery as well, but it turns out the only yellow jewellery I have is this little necklace which is difficult to see with the poncho, never mind.”

And, here I am! I initially thought the main object in the painting was orange so I had another outfit picked out. When I looked at the artwork again, I realized it was more yellow, so I pivoted to this yellow J Jill linen dress. I used an amazingly beautiful scarf from the IMA’s gift shop to add the orange and little squiggles you see in the art. I really like the end result!

And, that’s a wrap for this Gallery of Style!

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Gallery of Style for Style Imitating Art…thank you to Sally, Salazar, Suzy, and Shelbee for participating. Remember, you don’t have to have a blog to be a part of this style challenge. You can send a photo to the curator to be included in the gallery of style! We’d love to have more people join in! You can also still send me a photo, and I’ll edit the post to include you!

Coming up…

I hope you’ll come back next Monday to see the art work we’ll be styling and imitating! And, please visit all of the people who participated in this week’s challenge!

    • Thanks, Shelbee! It is truly amazing how different we all were. I saw the green but completely forgot about it. I should have at least worn a green necklace or sandals!

  6. Nice variety of colors, shapes, and styles in this round-up! I would never have thought of a crochet poncho like Suzy has but it really works.

    • Isn’t it wonderful how many different outfits are inspired by the same piece of art? And, I would never have thought of a poncho, either. But, that’s the beauty of SIA as well as art in general!

      Thanks, Sally!!!

  7. It’s so much fun to see everyone interpreted the painting, isn’t it? I love how different we all look!

    • Thanks, Laura! I am always so surprised to see what someone else picks up on in the art. It also makes you really think and look at your wardrobe.
