Week #47

How has your week been? Late last year, Nigel and I bought several gallons of paint. Lowes had some kind of promotion going, and paint is so dagoone expensive! Anyhoo, we bought enough to paint the primary bedroom as well as the two bathrooms. Our bathrooms are stupid big…but, then, these condos are built primarily for those of us of a certain age! So, I suppose they are just right when you consider using wheelchairs and such. Long story not much shorter, we painted the primary bedroom and only used one gallon. We decided to use it on the third bedroom leaving one gallon for the primary bathroom. This past week, we painted the non-primary bedroom which is only slightly smaller than the primary one. Now, we have all these partial gallons of paint and one last bathroom to paint. My thought is to paint the third bedroom, then mix all the left over gallons together to create a new color. They are relatively close in color, tint, hue, or shade. I will never get that right no matter how many times Sally tries to explain it to me! I actually want to wallpaper the wall behind the mirror. I’ve found a really nice paper which has a William Morris feel to it. It’s peel and stick. The only thing holding me back is the directions say to overlap the seams. I have never done that, and, trust me, I’ve done lots of wallpapering! So, if you’ve used any of the peel and stick wallpaper, let me know what you did and how it worked! Nigel absolutely refuses to put up traditional wallpaper because of the mess when you take it down. Trust me, I’ve done lots of that, too!

Hi Marsha, the week flies and we are at another Reboot link up! We are renovating our bathrooms at the moment so tiling instead of painting. I love a freshly painted room though. It really can make all the difference.
I think I like to tile as much as I like to paint! It’s the grouting I don’t like. We renovated a bathroom, dressing room, and walk in closet at our house up north. We turned those three rooms into a powder room, walk in tiled shower, walk-thru closet, and a vanity room. We did two different kinds of tile, and I loved it. I think we moved two or three years later! But, you’re so right about changing paint colors. It can change the entire room’s personality!

Marsha, I enjoyed your post and the story about painting all the rooms! let us know how the mixed color comes out! I was surprised when you mentioned overlapping the wallpaper, as I had never heard of that either. I hope that someone who has done it will comment about how it works. Hope it works out for your last bathroom. Sounds like a great idea to do a wall of wallpaper but I would be afraid to mess up the paper. I have never done wallpaper though. We are supposed to chose some lvp floors… getting me and hubby to agree is difficult though. Hoping to figure it out this weekend.

We have wallpapered many, many times so I wouldn’t be worried if we were using traditional wallpaper. But, I’m thrown by the overlapping with the peel and stick. Oh, flooring is difficult! And, then having it work with all the different natural light is confusing, too. Good luck!

I love painting! I think that is a great idea to mix all the leftover paints to create a new color with enough paint for a room. My husband hung a wallpaper mural in the game room and asked me to please never ask him to hang wallpaper again! LOL I have never hung it myself but I have removed wallpaper many times and it is brutal so I understand why Nigel doesn’t want it! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend! Hahaha!!! Here’s the thing…I love to wallpaper and have done it several times. That means I’ve removed it lots of times, too. One time, I bought a Paper Tiger which is a serrated gear like thing. You run it gently over the walls to perforate the outer coating. Then, you drench it with water, and the paper comes off easier. I made the mistake of letting Mike use it, and we had perforated walls not paper!!! I think we will end up combining some of the paint, but I still want that one wall wallpapered. I just have to figure out if the peel and stick is the right thing.

I am the worst at wallpapering. You have to overlap because the wallpaper shrinks and/or walls can shift causing the wall behind the wallpaper to show. I always had the hardest time getting everything straight, but it doesn’t help when you live in a house that’s over 100 years old and there’s not a straight wall in the house! ha ha! Thanks for the party.
We have wallpapered so many times. At one time, our house up north had wallpaper in every room. The kitchen had every square inch covered, and we did it all. It’s the taking it down that stinks. I have never ever overlapped wallpaper. That would mess up the design, wouldn’t it?

About 12 years ago when we remodeled the entire downstairs except for the Den, I painted every room!! I d love to paint and I hope to strip off the wall paper border in our upstairs hall and paint the wall…I am also planing on painting the faux brick wall in the LR for the 4th time in 46 years!! Hi, Deb! We just moved into this house a year ago last August. We have now repainted every room but the back bedroom, the primary bathroom, and the laundry room/walk in closet. I don’t know what I was thinking going with Antique White in the whole house other than the builder was asking a small fortune to change colors. And, like you, I love to paint! Painting a faux brix wall would be so cool! You’ve lived at your house for 46 years? Good for you! If we’d stayed up north, we’d be getting close to 35 years. I loved that house and still miss it and the huge yard.

I have never used wallpaper but have created a few accent walls using paint. I’ve always wanted to dump a bunch of our leftover gallons together (I primarily buy blues and greens so it would work!) and see what color we end up with. Having mixed paint colors since I was 5 in my art classes I have a good feel for what end color results will look like but my husband isn’t willing to experiment like that (plus it would be awful to custom mix something and run out of paint since I am awful at guessing how much I need to paint an area).
Oh, my goodness! I love to wallpaper. There’s something so satisfying to it. But, removing it is a completely different story! I have done accent walls, too. And, if I don’t wallpaper in the primary bathroom, I may do that. I haven’t completely convinced Mike to mix the paint yet. But, I also don’t want to buy another gallon of paint when we have so much left over.

Peel and stick William Morris style wall paper sounds amazing…but I don’t have any experience with the peel and stick to share. I’m now having memories of taking down this impossible wallpaper in the hallway in the house I grew up in. I swear they applied that stuff with Super Glue. It took FOREVER to remove tiny bit by tiny bit. I have no idea how I got roped into that project. I didn’t like the wallpaper so I assume my parents convinced me that they were “letting” me remove it, haha.
Hahaha!!! At one point, our house up north was completely wallpapered. Then, my taste changed, and I learned the harsh realities of taking down wallpaper. That’s the easy part. But, getting that glue off the wall is awful! I bought a Paper Tiger which is a kinda neat thingamajig that has serrated gears. You gently glide it over the wallpaper so that water can get through the top layer. Let me just warn you now…do not give a man a paper tiger! Some of those walls were perforated when Mike got done with them! We finally graduated to a wallpaper steamer to remove it. But, I do love wallpaper and peel and stick sounds perfect to me!

Your week sounds quite productive with all the painting projects underway! It’s great to hear that you managed to stretch your paint supply and make use of it in different areas of your home. Mixing the leftover gallons to create a new color for the final bathroom sounds like a creative solution.
Thanks, Melody! We haven’t mixed the paint yet as I haven’t quite convinced my husband that it’s a good idea! We always keep some paint around for touch ups. But, the reality is we usually end up throwing it out after it’s dried up.
