Polka Dots Here and There!

Recovery is going slowly for Nigel. I really thought, last month, when I wrote my Ageless Style post, that we would have this miraculous recovery. I know, though, that every day down takes 1-3 days to recover. I just play cheerleader all the time…that is when I’m not being the drill sergeant and working him through his home physical therapy exercises. He’s not a fan of that Marsha! And, since misery loves company, my right knee is beginning to squeak a bit. I told Nigel we would be in quite a pickle if the doctor (his new doctor, btw) said I needed it replaced. At least one of us needs to be walking! Today, though, is the third Thursday of the month which means it’s time for another Ageless Style challenge.  This month, we are styling “Polka Dots and Stripes” which was chosen by me! Last month, Jodie selected “Scarves.” In the past we have worn Scarves, One Look Three Ways, Tweed, and many other ideas. If you’re curious, you can find some of my looks herehere, here, and here. Next month’s prompt is Summer Layering if you’d like to join us! Please do visit the other hostesses of the link party (oh, yes, there’s a link party) at their various sites!

A little history…

Well, I was all prepared to write about the history of polka dots, but Google showed me I’d already written about it. Dang. If you want to read that post, it’s right here. Strangely enough, it’s an Ageless Style post, too! So, that leaves me trying to come up with something to write about because y’all know me. I can’t just write about the fashion even though I did just that yesterday (see the post here). So, then I was going to write about stripes. Well, of course, I’ve already done that, too (see post here)!

A little more history…

Once upon a time, I used to do a series called Final Fridays with another blogger friend. The purpose of that particular iteration was to practice different ways of print mixing or pattern matching. It seems there is a difference. “A pattern is a type of repeating design, such as geometric, stripes, and florals. You can find these designs printed on top of, woven into, or embroidered on fabrics…A print refers to the application of the pattern (source).” That’s clear as mud, right? Let’s try this source: “A pattern is any repeated design, whereas a print is a design that has been printed onto fabric, rather than woven or embroidered.” I think they say the same thing.

Patterns…

A pattern is a repeated design. Let’s think about that. What is a good repeated design? Polka dots spring to mind right off the bat (wonder why…hahaha). How about gingham? Is that a repeated design? Well, maybe we should back up. Are stripes a repeated design? If so, then isn’t gingham just stripes being repeated in two different directions? The same goes for plaid. The first source I quoted says plaids vary the thickness of the stripes and are sometimes called tartan. I can go along with that. Another pattern might be…wait for it…floral! You didn’t really think I would leave that out, did you? Another one that you might not immediately think of is paisley. There are a plethora of patterns.

Prints…

That’s the tricky one, I think. Prints are simply designs “printed upon, woven into, or embroidered on” something, usually fabric. A print is how the design is applied…stamped, dyed, or digitally applied on top of the fabric. Now, here’s the kicker: All prints are patterns, but not all patterns are prints! That’s gonna keep y’all up tonight, I just know it!

How to mix prints and/or patterns…

Well, you could do what I do. Look for something in the same color family with a different print or pattern. Put it on; look in the mirror. If you like it, you’ve got a winner! If you don’t, take it off and try something else. But, there are ways to do it a little more seriously. From this source:

  • Get to know your foundation prints. Start with classic, simple prints: stripes, polka-dots, and florals. Then, layer on a bolder print. For example, try a classic striped T-shirt with a more exciting geometric pattern layered on top. The lines in both patterns will compliment each other, and the simple stripe will act as a neutral.”
  • “Embrace the power clash. You don’t always have to match patterns. Mixing bold patterns like leopard print and plaid may seem like a fashion faux pas, but there’s a lot of power in selecting two prints that don’t share any commonalities. Anchor the look with a neutral item, like a black blazer or denim jacket.”
  • Choose patterns of different sizes. One of the simplest ways to mix patterns is to layer patterns with two different scales. Pairing a small-scale print with a large-scale pattern allows the smaller scale to work as a neutral. In this way, a skirt with a tiny floral print can work with a large-format plaid flannel for a grunge look.”
  • Use color. When working with mixed prints, pay close attention to colors. Bold patterns in neutral colors, like black and white, can offset wildly different patterns in a more vibrant color scheme. One strategy is to mix a monochrome pattern, like a red-and-white polka-dot, with a multicolor pattern that features the color from the monochrome, like a red floral print.”

The outfit…

When I suggested stripes and polka dots, I had no idea how hard it was going to be to find a polka dotted or striped tee shirt. I already had both the striped and polka dotted skirt. I scoured the internet trying to find one or the other. I thought polka dots were supposed to be big this year, but I surely didn’t see any. Then, I had to go to WalMart to get a prescription for Nigel, and I just happened to walk through the women’s section. When what to my wandering eye did appear a striped tee shirt! But, alas and alack, it was navy and white. Daggone it. Then, I turned a corner, and I swear the Heavens opened up and a chorus of angels sang…there it was…the perfect black and white striped tee shirt! Since I had a striped tee, I was now going with my polka dotted skirt. This is the Talbots Maxi Skirt in Brilliant Dot! Don’t you just love the name? I bought it last year waaay before Christmas so I’m kinda shocked at the price. I wore it here with a black cashmere turtleneck. It’s a bit heavy for summer wear unless it cools off like it had done prior to today (yes, I’m writing this the day before it’s posted). I love the simplicity of this look. Are y’all surprised?

The Lewk!

I knew I wanted to wear my new Miz Mooz Farrah blush flats. I haven’t worn them to the museum yet because I’m having some problems with one of my pinky toes. I need to find some of those little silicone toe tubes (let me know where to find them). With that in mind, I went looking for some pastel pink jewelry to kinda bookend the look. The earrings and necklace are old and from…you guessed it…J Jill…as is the grey-ish stone bracelet. It’s kinda heavy so it never wants to lay right on my wrist. I solved that problem by splitting it with the two pink beaded bracelets. I think I got them from Amazon, but I’m not sure.

Wrap it up, Marsha!

I don’t know…do you like when I blather on and on, or should I just stick to the fashion like I did yesterday? I hope you say the former because, even though I think I’m a fashion blogger, I really just like to write, too. I live in a weird little niche of the blogosphere, I guess. So, can we talk? Do you mix and match patterns or prints? Do you use those terms interchangeably? What is your favorite mixture of prints/patterns? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as quickly as I can.

  1. I just commented on a Angie’s blogthat polka dots are perfect with stripes. And here you are, showing us I’m right! Ask Gerben, I’m always right. That’s a fabulous outfit Marsha!

    • Thanks, Nancy! I’m always right, too…hahaha!! I did see Angie’s post and commented that mine was about polka dots, too.

  2. I wouldn’t think to mix the two. thanks for the advice.

  3. I liked that skirt with the turtleneck, but it looks just as nice with the striped tee. Nice choice!
And you already know that I like you to blather on 😉

    • Thanks, Cat! I really like both ways, too. I don’t know that I could pick a favorite though I wouldn’t wear cashmere in the summer here! So glad you enjoy my blathering on!

  4. That skirt is a stunner! I rarely think to buy anything with polka dots but I do like them. This was a fun challenge for me and I was surprised not to have to buy anything for it.

    • Thanks, Joanne! I was really happy when I found the striped tee so I could wear it again on the blog. It really is a classic, and I’ll wear it for years and years. I’m glad you enjoyed the challenge.

  5. As far as print and pattern mixing goes, there is nothing more perfect and classic than a combination of black and white stripes and dots! This skirt is amazing! I adore the big bold white dots on the black background for the perfect amount of drama. The tee is simple but just the right thing for a casual style with this gorgeous skirt. Love this look from head to toe! I have always used the terms print and pattern synonymously even though I know they do have slightly different meanings. But there aren’t very many other options as synonyms and I like variety in my words when writing! LOL I enjoy when you share all of your blathering thoughts in your posts! I do the same in mine!

    • Thanks, my friend! As soon as I saw this skirt last holiday season, I knew I wanted it. I waited for a super duper sale before buying it, though. I can’t believe how much it is now, especially as it’s in such limited sizes. I have to admit I use the print and pattern interchangeably. It seems like splitting hairs unless you’re in the fashion industry. I’m so glad you enjoy my blathering away as much as I like yours!

  6. Kellyann C Rohr

I am anxiously awaiting the day that I open your blog and read that Nigel is up and walking! What an ordeal for both of you. Continued prayers my friend.
Love that skirt so much! I have that Walmart tee and love it, such good quality!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Oh, Kellyann!!! I can’t wait until the day I can write that. Thank you for the prayers.

I’m so glad you liked the skirt. If I didn’t have so many tees, I’d go back and grab a couple more in different colors…I still might. They really are amazing quality!

  7. You look lovely, Marsha. Recovery is slower as we get older and I hope Nigel is making steady progress. My husband and I keep saying, “What used to take 3 days to recover from now takes 3 weeks”! Hang in there and tell that knee to be quiet!

    • Thank you so much, Ann! I agree…three days now taking three weeks! I just asked Mike why do our joints have to revolt! I really, really don’t want to have it replaced for a few more years. The shots, though, are wearing off much faster than they did. And, thank you for the nice compliments!

  8. You look amazing! This is one great outfit! I really like your new tee: I need to update one of my striped tee and may have to see if my Walmart has it. The skirt is bold and fantastic, but it sure is pretty expensive to be last year’s,
    http://www.chezmireillefashiontravelmom.com

    • Thanks so much, Mireille! I’m betting in a few weeks those tees will be even less. They are really nice for the price. I was shocked when I saw the price. I paid waaay less than that.

  9. I like the bold optic look of this black and white geometric print mix! Sending good vibes for you and Nigel as you eagerly/patiently work toward recovery.

    • Thanks, Sally! I really appreciate the good vibes…we have good days and bad ones. I was so happy when I found the striped tee. Who would think finding one would be so difficult?

  10. jodie filogomo

Plethora of prints…yes, yes and triple yes. I love this combination and I have to admit I would never have thought of this prompt for our group, but everyone rocked it.
    Thanks for choosing it,
    XOXO
    Jodie

    • Thanks, Jodie! I was happy everyone agreed to it as not all are comfortable with mixing prints. I feel weird when I don’t.

  11. First off, Marsha, wishing you and Nigel good health! It’s challenging being in the caregiver role and not feeling 100 percent yourself. Now for the look, I love the stripes with the polka dots. I’m not sure I would have thought to combine the two, but they look great. Also, I’m in love with those shoes.

    • Thanks so much, Christie! Every day is a new adventure, that’s for sure. Aren’t the shoes just the best? I really liked the way the outfit came together.

  12. Hello Marsha , apologies I am running rather late with my comments . As a lover of polka dots I really like this outfit .
I do hope your pesky knee problems don’t require major surgery as that Nigel continues to improve . Those exercises are so important so keep up being a drill sergeant.

  13. What a fabulous look Marsha! The mix of prints is fabulous! Thanks for the update on Nigel. I will keep praying for healing.

    • Thank you so much, Kathrine! I really loved doing this challenge because I’d already shown the skirt with a solid top. I thank you for the added prayers, too!

  14. That is the best outfit I have ever seen on you. It is stunning and you are stunning wearing it. I adore that skirt. Altogether it is a fab look. ❤️

I hope all is well with you and yours and that Nigel continues to improve.

    • Aww, thanks so much, Penny! I really do love the look. The skirt is just a showstopper, isn’t it? Nigel is getting better though he just needs to walk more. He says it hurts so he doesn’t want to walk. I told him that’s part of the no pain, no gain part of recovery. He will get there…it’s just a matter of how much time he wants to put into it.

  15. Polka dots really are having a moment, and I love how you styled them in a way that feels playful without being over the top. The mix of patterns, textures, and accessories gives the outfit so much personality.

    • Thanks so much, Laura! I have always loved polka dots though I don’t always have many in my closet. I had a lot of fun with this challenge!

  16. I’ve always loved polka dots and you wear them so well! That skirt with the striped top look so good on you! I would have never thought of putting those two pieces together but it makes a stunning outfit! Sneding continued prayers for Nigel (and his caretaker), too!

    • Thanks so much, Laura! I started print mixing a few years ago, and now it’s just second nature to me. I have to admit it’s the first thing that occurs to me when I start getting dressed. Thank you so much for the prayers. We continue to need them!

  17. Hi, Marsha – My husband suddenly got afflicted with tendonitis or something that spread inflammation throughout his whole body. That happened about two months ago and I have been very busy with him – taking care of him as well as doing all the things he would normally do. Up until then, he was a dynamo. As I have been going through this new experience, it has been reminding me of your situation with your hubby which has been going on for years! I empathize totally. This outfit is very classic and chic. It makes you look fresh. And of course, as always, your jewelry is awesome. I had just done a blog post on polka dots because it is, indeed, trending for this Spring/Summer season. So I’m surprised that you had a hard time finding them in the stores. In the past, I wrote a post on print mixing and had to include a description of pattern mixing as well. Even though I wrote all about it, it’s always good to get a new rundown on how to mix prints and patterns because it can be complicated. So I really appreciate how you delved in to some of the ways to do it. There’s a photo of me on my blog, too, wearing a plaid shirt over a leopard-print top. They go together very easily. Loved this post – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • Thanks, Angie! I’m so sorry you’re going through this kind of thing, too. It really brings home the fact you’re a partnership. Tomorrow, I’m going to learn how to change the furnace filter. It’s a new to me furnace, but I’m sure it won’t be that difficult. I do hope your husband recovers soon. I’m so glad you like the outfit. I thought it was funny when I read your post on polka dots because mine was going live the next day! Yes, I have had a really tough time finding them! A sales associate told me they were a spring thing, and most of them were already sold. I love print mixing and feel a little strange now when I don’t do it!

  18. A gorgeous skirt and the striped top is the perfect companion. I love polka dots with stripes. Hope your knee is OK.
    Thanks for linking.

    • Thank you, Gail! I do love stripes and polka dots together, too! The knee screams every now and again, but I’m working it hard right now.
