Rules…
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I am a rule follower. I think it’s kinda inherent when you’re a teacher. You expect rules to be followed, and eventually, you become a rule follower. But, I think fashion rules are really just guidelines. It’s kinda like the speed limits on 465 around Indianapolis…55 is just a guideline…though they did raise it to 65 in certain areas. That’s really dumb because you’re driving along at 75, trying not to be driven off the road by all the road ragers out there when, all of a sudden, the speed limit changes to 55! Of course, no one slows down so you don’t dare do it, either. But, I digress.

Rules of style…
I have written about the rules of style many times. Here’s one from my first year of blogging. Geez, I was better then, I think! Actually, it’s really good. I think you should read it. I’ll wait. Oh, you’re back. Well, I’m about to send you away again in case you didn’t read my post about what women of a certain age shouldn’t do! How about two posts about wearing white after Labor Day (here, here)? The second post was also from my first year of blogging, and I’ve since changed my mind on that rule.

More rules of style…
Currently, wide leg pants are in style, and I’m here for it! I love the ease of them, but I really love how they remind me of the bell bottoms we wore in the 70s. Here’s the funny thing…I have no clue what kind of top I wore with them! I do remember wearing tube tops a lot so maybe that’s what I wore. I do know I wouldn’t have been able to wear them to school though. There I go…digressing! So, wide legs are in style. The “rule” is you should wear a top that fits a little closer to the body to proportionize yourself. The same goes for voluminous tops. If you’re wearing a voluminous top, you should wear pants/jeans that fit a little closer to the body. I say, “Pffft!” to that rule. I like to wear both at the same time! And, since the only person I truly have to please when I get dressed is me, all is good!

The outfit…
Now, I have been caught out by statement sleeves before (see this post). I could never ever get that top to work for me. I loved everything about that top…the pintucking, the color, even the fabric. But, there was so much fabric to the top itself. A good wind and everyone could see what the good Lord gave me up top! You couldn’t tuck it in because, as I recall, it was a tad on the short side and wouldn’t stay tucked. I did try wearing it open, and it lost a lot of its panache. But, this Linen Peasant top? This one is sticking around. I love the color, the pattern, the fabric (100% linen), and the sleeves! Look at those sleeves! Once again, it’s pintucked, but the sleeves are, not the top itself. It’s cropped though it’s not described that way. As you can see, it’s not all that long on my 5’1″ body. The body is a little oversized, but not by much. I’m wearing my barrel jeans from Old Navy. I am so glad I tried these on in the store one day because I just love them! I think I may get them in a different wash and use some rewards.

A surprise…
I got permission from both her mama and her, but I wanted to show you my beautiful photographer…my oldest granddaughter! I cannot believe this curly haired beauty is this old already. I remember holding her just minutes after she was born. My daughter and her husband lived in Charleston then. I stayed with them for two weeks to help out. I would swaddle her and hold her until midnight or later then hand her over to her mama. When they lived with us, before and after her little brother was born, I would often rock her to sleep. I could tell the exact moment she had fallen asleep. Now, look at her! I tell her the world is her oyster! Oh, and she didn’t get her hair from me though there is curly hair on my dad’s side of the family. No, I think those beautiful curls came from her dad’s Greek side!

The Lewk!

This jewelry is very old. I’m talking in terms of decades! I think this was Macy’s version of David Yurman. I don’t think there’s much of a difference, do you? I do know, considering the cost of David Yurman, they were a bargain. I love amethyst jewelry, but I don’t really like the Yurman Albion ring in amethyst. Here are these sneakers again! They are the adidas Samba OG sneakers in cream white/violet/sand. I am seriously considering getting another pair, but I don’t know what color combination to get. Maybe, I should wait to see what colors come out for fall.
Wrap it up, Marsha!
As you can tell from the photos, this was during my photo shoot with my granddaughter. I just couldn’t stop laughing. I hope we get to do another one some day. But, Nigel has really missed doing them. But, we shall see. So, can we talk? Do you like to break fashion rules? Or, are there no such things as fashion rules as far as you’re concerned? Do you like wearing flowy tops with flowy bottoms? Please leave me a comment or two, and we can talk. I promise to respond as quickly as I can.

Thank you!
I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for reading, commenting, subscribing or emailing! It truly means so much to me! If you’d like to follow me on Instagram, you can find me here.

Couldn’t agree more that those silly fashion rules are meant to be broken . We have earnt the right to wear whatever makes you feel good . I can tell that the wider jeans and that pretty shirt make you happy as they should because they are perfect on you.
Your granddaughter did a great job with the photos . I can see why you are so proud of this vibrant young woman.
Thanks, Jill! Teenagers can make phones do anything. She really did do a wonderful job with the photos. I’ll tell her you said she was vibrant. She’ll love that! I love that you said we have earnt the right to wear whatever makes us feel good because that’s so true. I am pretty sure I get some looks when I’m out and about. I don’t care. I’m happy wearing my clothes!
Fashion isn’t fashion of there are rules right? It’s all about your own creativity. We don’t care about rules, well fashion rules that is. And I think this is a very good look. The jeans look smashing on you. And what a beautiful granddaughter!
Thanks, Nancy! She is gorgeous, isn’t she? I agree with you. Fashion is creative and personal and unique! And, thank you for the compliments!
Clothes need to work for you, and these look great. Wonderful photoshoot.
Thank you so much, Rosie! We had a blast!
“I think it’s kinda inherent when you’re a teacher.” I think it’s the same for a librarian. There will always be exceptions, though, if there’s a good reason.
I can’t say anything on fashion rules. I once got a few tops that everyone said looked great on me. I felt they were too short and I felt terrible in them, so I couldn’t wear them anymore. Isn’t fashion about feeling good with what you wear? That should be the rule.
https://catswire.blogspot.com/
Thanks, Cat! Fashion is definitely about feeling good about what you wear. And, if you don’t feel good in it, it shows in your face and your actions. I’ve seen that over and over again in some of my blog posts! I’m sure libraries have lots of rules only librarians know about. When I was a little girl, our beautiful library (which was torn down and is, yes, a parking lot) had this special room for specific books. I wanted to go into that room so badly! Then, when I finally had a reason to do so, I discovered there was nothing there of interest to me. But, I kinda miss card catalogs and stacks you could see over. The library in my new town is brand new (as was the library in my hometown). They just don’t have the same feel (or smell).
I love your outfit! I often break fashion rules (and other rules too!). I started rebelling against a lot of rules when we began homeschooling– not laws mind you but rules. It seems like we have so many of them nowadays and many don’t really seem to have any rhyme or reason.
Thanks, Joanne! I am always discovering new fashion rules so I break them before I even know about them!
For the record, I am with Nigel, definitely team David Lee Roth. I just can’t wrap my head around VH sounding any other way!
I LOVE ON barrel jeans, I tried on a pair last month and I am STILL thinking of them. They fit so well. These look terrific on you.
Your granddaughter is stunning! That skin and that hair – what a beauty!!!
xo,
Kellyann
Hahaha!!! I’ll tell Mike you are a David Lee Roth vote! It’s not that I didn’t like David Lee, but I just liked Sammy’s vibe. Well, who am I to tell you you need a pair of barrel jeans, but you definitely need these from ON if you get them!
Thank you! I think she is stunning! Her hair is just amazing…it’s really long when it’s wet, and then it bounces back up into these beautiful curls! And, it is so thick.
I do not follow fashion rules, which anyone who has ever seen me knows, but I admire those who do. I like your outfit and LOVE the photos of you and your granddaughter!
Thanks, Lisa! Isn’t she beautiful? The thing is that beauty is inside and out. My vote is always going to be wear what you want and wear what you like!
This just goes to show how breaking the rules makes for a happy soul. Obviously this photographer makes you smile and so does that top. I may have to get it too.
And don’t you just love the barrel jeans? I was just as surprised with them.
XOOX
Jodie
Thanks, Jodie! Once upon a time, I would have followed those rules strictly. Now, I wear what I want. And, yes, my photographer makes me smile and laugh! I really do like these jeans. I think I want them in another wash!! I also saw you ordered the top!!
Love the shirt, it’s looks super with your jeans xx have a great weekend Marsha x
Thanks so much, Jacqui! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
Good for you for not following the rules! Love the pretty top my friend. And your granddaughter is stunning! The pics of you and her are so precious.
https;//www.kathrineeldridge.com
Thank you, Kathrine! I have to admit there are rules I probably don’t even know I break! Isn’t she gorgeous? She is a treat!
I agree with you, Marsha! We teachers (at least you and me) are rule followers! Sometimes I wish I could veer away from it just a bit! I agree also, that the rules of fashion should be a guideline. The older I get, the more I wear items that I’m more comfortable in my own skin in. Your memories of your granddaughter are so sweet – she is a beauty and a great photographer, too!
Thanks, Laura! I knew you would agree with me. It’s so hard to break some rules…except for fashion. I have learned to not worry about those. If someone doesn’t like what I’m wearing (as long as I’m decent), it’s their problem, not mine. Thank you for the comments about my granddaughter. She is gorgeous, and I love telling her that!
Absolutely agree that fashion rules are meant to be broken! I think they’re helpful if you need a guideline, but you should always put your own spin on things and style it in a way that makes you feel great in it! This is such a cute relaxed look! That top is fabulous! Your granddaughter is beautiful! Love seeing these photos of you two!
Jill – Doused in Pink
Thanks, Jill! My granddaughter doesn’t regularly read the blog (though she does tell her friends her granny has one). She read this one, though! I think you’re right that some may need the rules for a guideline, but it’s so much fun to make the items our own. You do that so well! I love this top and am glad I splurged a little (I used points, too) on it.
Great top but I really love the laces on the sneakers! You look fab!
Thanks so much, Lydia! I have to admit the laces got me, too! They did come with another pair of plain laces (though I’m not sure where I put them).

How fun! I loved getting a glimpse of your granddaughter! She is a beautiful girl! Love those curls! And your outfit is fabulous too! I say where what you want, rules be damned!
Thanks, Laura! I thought of you when I put the photos in! She has to work hard to tame the curls, but it’s worth it. I agree with you about the rules. We don’t need any more rules in our lives, right?
